This series reports on new developments in all areas of mathematics and their
applications - quickly, informally and at a high level. Mathematical texts analysing
new developments in modelling and numerical simulation are welcome. The type of
material considered for publication includes:
1. Research monographs
2. Lectures on a new field or presentations of a new angle in a classical field
3. Summer schools and intensive courses on topics of current research.
Texts which are out of print but still in demand may also be considered if they fall
within these categories. The timeliness of a manuscript is sometimes more important
than its form, which may be preliminary or tentative.
Titles from this series are indexed by Scopus, Web of Science, Mathematical
Reviews, and zbMATH.

Laplacian growth in modern mathematical physics” (organized by D. Crowdy, B. Gustafsson,

Onodera, Makoto Sakai, Björn Gustafsson, and Yu-Lin Lin
In memory and honor of Makoto Sakai
(1943–2013).
Preface

This book grew out of investigations on the Polubarinova-Galin equation, describing

the conformal map onto a growing Hele-Shaw fluid blob, by one of the authors
(Lin); see [69–72]. This was followed up by joint work by Gustafsson and Lin [35]
concerning the dynamics of zeros and poles of the derivative of the conformal map.
The Hele-Shaw problem also has a description in terms of weak solutions related
to balayage, more precisely partial balayage, this being much related to quadrature
domains for subharmonic functions. These tools have been developed by Makoto
Sakai [97, 98] partly in collaboration with one of the authors [41]. More recently,
the tool of partial balayage was, in collaboration with Joakim Roos, extended to
Riemannian manifolds [40].
The present book can be viewed as a continuation and extension of the work by
Gustafsson and Lin [35] to the case of conformal maps that are no longer univalent
in the usual sense but then still can be viewed as conformal maps into Riemann
surfaces that are branched coverings of surfaces over the complex plane. For this
purpose, the tools of Gustafsson and Roos [40] are needed. The original aim was to
prove the existence of a global in time solution starting from an arbitrary conformal
image of the unit disk. On the one hand, this turned out to be more difficult than
expected (there still remains a technical obstacle to be overcome), but on the other
hand the subject as a whole has showed up to be extraordinarily rich and interesting
from different points of view. We have in this respect taken the opportunity to
connect the Hele-Shaw problem or, by another name, Laplacian growth, to some
recent developments in mathematical physics, relating to integrable hierarchies,
string equations, and Hamiltonian systems in infinitely many time variables. This
material is inspired by the papers of Igor Krichever, Mark Mineev-Weinstein, Paul
Wiegmann, Anton Zabrodin, and others.
Many topics in the book are close in spirit to the work of Makoto Sakai. One
of the authors of this volume collaborated with Sakai for more than twenty years,
but very sadly Sakai passed away, unexpectedly, in December 2013. Sakai started
working on extremal problems for analytic functions on Riemann surfaces in the
late 1960s. For example, in his first published paper [93] Sakai solved an open
problem stated in the work by Sario and Oikawa [106]. Continued work in this

ix
x Preface

direction led him to tools of potential theory for constructing extremal functions and
corresponding domains. The appendix in the mentioned Lecture Notes [97] gives
an excellent account for how things are connected. See also [95, 96], for example.
Starting from a different extremal problem for analytic functions, Dov Aharonov
and Harold S. Shapiro [2] were led to similar kinds of extremal domains, and they
named them quadrature domains. This terminology is now generally adopted. See
[42, 109] for overviews.
These quadrature domains are, via a discovery by Stanley Richardson [88], linked
to the Hele-Shaw problem, as explained in the work by Sakai [97]. See also [98]
where quadrature domains are constructed in essentially the same way (namely,
by using variational inequalities), as weak solutions of the Hele-Shaw problem are
constructed in the work by Gustafsson [29]. A related construction appears in the
work by Elliott and Janovsky [18].
Almost all papers (40 published papers in total, according to MathSciNet) by
Makoto Sakai concern directly or indirectly topics connected to quadrature domains.
In one of his least known papers [100], Sakai discusses quadrature Riemann
surfaces. That paper is particularly close to the present Lecture Notes. In that
paper, Sakai got stuck on one technical point, which he left open, and that point
is essentially the same as our technical difficulty, briefly mentioned above.
We would like to dedicate this book to the memory of Makoto Sakai (1943–
2013). Sakai made original and groundbreaking contributions in potential theory,
highly relevant for the material in the present treatise. He was one of the creators of
the theory of quadrature domains, and his books [97, 105] on the subject will have
a long-standing impact on the development of the subject, and on potential theory
and its applications in general. His papers and books are not always easy to read,
but they are very sharp, and Sakai’s work is now receiving increasing recognition in
the general mathematical community.
