This series reports on new developments in all areas of mathematics and their
applications - quickly, informally and at a high level. Mathematical texts analysing
new developments in modelling and numerical simulation are welcome. The type of
material considered for publication includes:
1. Research monographs
2. Lectures on a new field or presentations of a new angle in a classical field
3. Summer schools and intensive courses on topics of current research.
Texts which are out of print but still in demand may also be considered if they fall
within these categories. The timeliness of a manuscript is sometimes more important
than its form, which may be preliminary or tentative.
Titles from this series are indexed by Scopus, Web of Science, Mathematical
Reviews, and zbMATH.

direction led him to tools of potential theory for constructing extremal functions and
corresponding domains. The appendix in the mentioned Lecture Notes [97] gives
an excellent account for how things are connected. See also [95, 96], for example.
Starting from a different extremal problem for analytic functions, Dov Aharonov
and Harold S. Shapiro [2] were led to similar kinds of extremal domains, and they
named them quadrature domains. This terminology is now generally adopted. See
[42, 109] for overviews.
These quadrature domains are, via a discovery by Stanley Richardson [88], linked
to the Hele-Shaw problem, as explained in the work by Sakai [97]. See also [98]
where quadrature domains are constructed in essentially the same way (namely,
by using variational inequalities), as weak solutions of the Hele-Shaw problem are
constructed in the work by Gustafsson [29]. A related construction appears in the
work by Elliott and Janovsky [18].
Almost all papers (40 published papers in total, according to MathSciNet) by
Makoto Sakai concern directly or indirectly topics connected to quadrature domains.
In one of his least known papers [100], Sakai discusses quadrature Riemann
surfaces. That paper is particularly close to the present Lecture Notes. In that
paper, Sakai got stuck on one technical point, which he left open, and that point
is essentially the same as our technical difficulty, briefly mentioned above.
We would like to dedicate this book to the memory of Makoto Sakai (1943–
2013). Sakai made original and groundbreaking contributions in potential theory,
highly relevant for the material in the present treatise. He was one of the creators of
the theory of quadrature domains, and his books [97, 105] on the subject will have
a long-standing impact on the development of the subject, and on potential theory
and its applications in general. His papers and books are not always easy to read,
but they are very sharp, and Sakai’s work is now receiving increasing recognition in
the general mathematical community.
