LIST OF MALAY MANUSCRIPTS
WHICH WERE FORMERLY KEPT AT THE GENERAL
SECRETARIAT IN BATAVIA

edited by P: VOORHOEVE

This list, written by a scribe, was used by H.N. van der Tuuk when
he studied the Secretariat collection in 1850-51. It was found in his
bequest to the Leiden University Library. The title was given to it by
J. Brandes when he arranged Van der Tuuk's bequest.

The importance of the Secretariat collection for the study of Malay

manuscripts was set forth in 'A Malay Scriptorium' (1). The list is
published here as a supplement to that article. It is reproduced without any
change but with the following additions :

An asterisk (*) before the number of a MS. that is still extant.

The correct title, where necessary.

Van der Tuuk's notes on the size and paper of MSS. which are now
lost.
References to Van der Tuuk's notes (D), to the list published in
Notulen B.G. 1867 (E) and to L.W.C. van den Berg's list in Notulen
1880 (F).
The class-marks of the MSS. which are preserved in the Jakarta
and Leiden collections.

Malayan and Indonesian Studies presented to Sir Richard Winstedt, 1964, p.256 ff.

It is not attempted here to give a survey of the copies made at the

General Secretariat. Notes for such a survey may be found in the Leiden
University Library, Cod. Or. 12605, and, for MSS. of Palembang
provenance, in the Appendix to Directions for Travellers on the Mystic Path
by G.W. J. Drewes (VKI 81, 1977) . A complete and detailed survey would
require a pilgrimage along the libraries where they are kept.
