OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, ILE-IFE

FACULTY OF TECHNOLOGY
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
RAIN SEMESTER EXAMINATION, 2022/2023 ACADEMIC SESSION
COURSE CODE: CHE 202 UNITS: 3 units
COURSE TITLE: Industrial Process Calculations TIME ALLOWED: 3 hrs

INSTRUCTIONS: Attempt ANY Four (4) Questions.

QUESTION 1
(a) Make the following unit conversions using the correct number of significant figures:
(i) Convert 6.000 ft to micrometers.
(ii) Convert 100.0 km/h to in.( µ s ) −1 .
(iii) Convert 15.367 lbm ft2 s−2 to Btu. (7.5 marks)
(iv) Convert 32.17 ft s–2 to mm h–2.
(v) Convert 0.779 lbm ft2 s–3 to kW.

(b) Determine the monthly power bill to operate an air-conditioning unit if the unit delivers 2000
Btu h–1. Assume that the air-conditioning unit has an energy efficiency ratio (EER, i.e., the
ratio of Btus of cooling divided by W h of electrical energy used to drive the cooling unit)
equal to 11.2 Btu W–1 h–1 and that the cost of electrical energy is $0.14 per kW h.
(7.5 marks)
(c) Leaking oil tanks have become such an environmental problem that the federal government
has implemented a number of rules to reduce the problem. A flow rate from a leak from a
small hole in a tank can be predicted from the following relation:
2∆p
Q = 0.61S
ρ
where Q is the leakage rate (gal/min), S is the cross-sectional area of the hole causing
the leak (in.2), Δp is the pressure drop between the inside of the tank opposite the leak
and the atmospheric pressure (psi), and ρ is the fluid density (lb/ft3).

To test the tank, the vapor space is pressurized with N2 to a pressure of 23 psig. If the
tank is filled with gasoline (sp. gr. = 0.703) to the height of 73 in. and the hole is 1/4 in.
in diameter, what is the value of Q (in cubic feet per hour)? (10 marks)

QUESTION 2
(a) Several streams are mixed as shown in Figure 2.1. Calculate the flows of each stream in
kilograms per second. (15 marks)

(b) A process involves two sequential reactors. In the first reactor, 100 kmol of A reacts with 150
kmol of B to produce 80 kmol of C and 20 kmol of D. In the second reactor, the remaining B
reacts completely with an additional 50 kmol of A to produce 70 kmol of C and 30 kmol of E.
Calculate the overall material balance for each component (A, B, C, D, E). (10 marks)

QUESTION 3
(a) Figure 3.1 shows a simplified process to make ethylene dichloride (C2H4Cl2). The feed data
have been placed on the figure. Ninety percent conversion of the C2H4 occurs on each pass
through the reactor. The overhead stream from the separator contains 98% of the Cl2
entering the separator, 92% of the entering C2H4, and 0.1% of the entering C2H4Cl2. Five
percent of the overhead from the separator is purged. Calculate (i) the flow rate and (ii) the
composition of the purge stream. (15 marks)

(b) In a mixing process, stream 1 contains 60% water and 40% ethanol, while stream 2 contains
80% water and 20% ethanol. If the flow rate of stream 1 is 100 kg/hr and the flow rate of
stream 2 is 50 kg/hr, determine the composition of the mixture. (10 marks)

QUESTION 4
(a) Examine Figure 4.1 (data for 1 hr).
(i) What is the single-pass conversion of H2 in the reactor?
(ii) What is the single-pass conversion of CO?
(iii) What is the overall conversion of H2?
(iv) What is the overall conversion of CO?
(15 marks)

(b) A distillation column separates a mixture into two streams. The feed contains 30 mol%
benzene and 70 mol% toluene. The distillate contains 90 mol% benzene and 10 mol%
toluene. The bottoms product contains 5 mol% benzene. If the feed rate is 100 mol/hr,
determine the flow rates of the distillate and bottoms streams. (10 marks)

QUESTION 5

(a) (i) Calculate Q for the system shown in Figure 5.1 in kJ/min.

(ii) Consider a steam heat exchanger in which 500 gallons per minute (gpm) of water are
heated from 65°F to 150°F using 50 psig steam. Assume that the steam condenses to
saturated liquid at 50 psig. What is the required flow rate of steam for this heat
exchanger?

(b) A gas containing 80% CH4 and 20% He is sent through a quartz diffusion tube (Figure 5.2) to
recover the helium. Twenty percent by weight of the original gas is recovered, and its
composition is 50% He. Calculate the composition of the waste gas if 100 kg moles of gas
are processed per minute. (10 marks)

QUESTION 6

(a) In Figure 6.1 Steam at 250oC saturated (which is used to preheat a fermentation broth) enters
the steam chest. The steam is segregated from the biomass solution in the preheater and is
completely condensed in the steam chest. The rate of the heat loss from the surroundings
is 1.5 kJ/s. The material to be heated, which enters at 45oC, flows into the process vessel,
which initially is at 20oC. If 150 kg of biomass with an average heat capacity of Cp = 3.26
J/(g)(K) flows into the process per hour, how many kilograms of steam are needed per hour?
