The Gathering

Stand to sing
O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray
That all thy church might be for ever one,
Grant us at every Eucharist to say
With longing heart and soul, ‘Thy will be done’:
Oh, may we all one bread, one body be,
Through this blest sacrament of unity.
2
For all thy church, O Lord, we intercede;
Make thou our sad divisions soon to cease;
Draw us the nearer each to each, we plead,
By drawing all to thee, O Prince of Peace:
Thus may we all one bread, one body be,
Through this blest sacrament of unity.
3
We pray thee too for wanderers from thy fold;
O bring them back, good Shepherd of the sheep,
Back to the faith which saints believed of old,
Back to the church which still that faith doth keep:
Soon may we all one bread, one body be,
Through this blest sacrament of unity.
4
So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease,
May we be one with all thy church above,
One with thy saints in one unbroken peace,
One with thy saints in one unbounded love:
More blessèd still, in peace and love to be
One with the Trinity in Unity.
Words: William Turton (1856-1938) Tune: SONG 1 AM 460

The President says

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit
be with you
and also with you.

The President introduces

Prayers of Penitence
Our Lord Jesus Christ says:
‘If you love me, keep my commandments.’
‘Unless I wash you, you have no part in me.’
Let us confess to almighty God our sins against his love,
and ask him to cleanse us.
Silence is kept.
Have mercy on us, O God, in your great goodness;
according to the abundance of your compassion blot out our offences.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Against you only have we sinned and done what is evil in your sight.
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Purge us from our sin and we shall be clean;
wash us and we shall be whiter than snow.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
The president says
May the Father forgive you
by the death of his Son
and strengthen you
to live in the power of the Spirit
all your days.
Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis
Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te,
benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter
magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex coelestis, Deus pater omnipotens.
Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe; Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, qui
tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis; qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly
King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise
you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of
God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at
the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy
Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
3
The Collect
Let us pray.

God our Father,

you have invited us to share in the supper
which your Son gave to his Church
to proclaim his death until he comes:
may he nourish us by his presence,
and unite us in his love;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

First Reading Exodus 12.1-14
The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark
for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you.
Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to
take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too
small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbour in obtaining one; the
lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. Your
lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep
or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then
the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. They
shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the
houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall
eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat
any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs,
and inner organs. You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything
that remains until the morning you shall burn. This is how you shall eat it: your
loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you
shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the LORD. For I will pass through the
land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of
Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute
judgements: I am the LORD. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses
where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall
destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be a day of
remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD;
throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance.
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

4
Remain seated as the choir sings Psalm 116.9-end
I will walk before the Lord :
in the land of the living.
I believed, and therefore will I speak; but I was sore troubled :
I said in my haste, All men are liars.
What reward shall I give unto the Lord :
for all the benefits that he hath done unto me?
I will receive the cup of salvation :
and call upon the Name of the Lord.
I will pay my vows now in the presence of all his people :
right dear in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.
Behold, O Lord, how that I am thy servant :
I am thy servant, and the son of thine hand-maid;
thou hast broken my bonds in sunder.
I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving :
and will call upon the Name of the Lord.
I will pay my vows unto the Lord, in the sight of all his people :
in the courts of the Lord’s house, even in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord.

The Epistle 1 Corinthians 11.23-26

Beloved: I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord
Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had
given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this in
remembrance of me.’ In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying,
‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in
remembrance of me.’ For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you
proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

3And after Supper he washed their feet,

An Upper Room did our Lord prepare
For those he loved until the end: For service too is sacrament.
And his disciples still gather there In him our joy shall be made complete–
To celebrate their Risen Friend. Sent out to serve, as he was sent.
2A 4No end there is! We depart in peace.
lasting gift Jesus gave his own:
To share his bread, his loving cup. He loves beyond the uttermost:
Whatever burdens bow us down, In every room in our Father’s house
He by his Cross shall lift us up. He will be there, as Lord and Host.

Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.

I give you a new commandment, says the Lord:
Love one another as I have loved you.
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.

The Gospel John 13.1-17, 31b-35

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

Glory to you, O Lord.
Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to
depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in
the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart
of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing
that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from
God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and
tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to
wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around
him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, ‘Lord, are you going to wash my
feet?’ Jesus answered, ‘You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will
understand.’ Peter said to him, ‘You will never wash my feet.’ Jesus answered,
‘Unless I wash you, you have no share with me.’ Simon Peter said to him, ‘Lord,
not my feet only but also my hands and my head!’ Jesus said to him, ‘One who
has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And
you are clean, though not all of you.’ For he knew who was to betray him; for
this reason he said, ‘Not all of you are clean.’

After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the
table, he said to them, ‘Do you know what I have done to you? You call me
Teacher and Lord - and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord
and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.
Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are
messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you
are blessed if you do them. Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has
been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him
in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little
longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you,
“Where I am going, you cannot come.” I give you a new commandment, that
you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one
another.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ

The Washing of Feet

The clergy move to the three stations for the Foot Washing; please follow the
directions of the stewards. You are encouraged to come forward to receive
this act of loving service.

The choir sings

The Motet

Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Where charity and love are, there is God.
Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. The love of Christ has bound us together.
Exultemus et in ipso iucundemur Let us exult and rejoice in this.
Timeamus et amemus Deum vivum. Let us fear and love the living God.
Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. And esteem him with a sincere heart.

After the washing of feet the clergy return to the High Altar

Silence is kept

The President says

Lord Jesus Christ,
you have taught us
that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters
we do also for you:
give us the will to be the servant of others
as you were the servant of all,
and gave up your life and died for us,
but are alive and reign, now and for ever.
Amen.

Prayers of Intercession
In the power of the Spirit let us pray to the Father
through Christ the saviour of the world.

Father, on this, the night he was betrayed,

your Son Jesus Christ washed his disciples’ feet.

7
We commit ourselves to follow his example of love and service.
Lord, hear us
and humble us.

On this night, he prayed for his disciples to be one.

We pray for the unity of your Church.
Lord, hear us
and unite us.

On this night, he prayed for those who were to believe

through his disciples’ message.
We pray for the mission of your Church.
Lord, hear us
and renew our zeal.

On this night, he commanded his disciples to love,

but suffered rejection himself.
We pray for the rejected and unloved.
Lord, hear us
and fill us with your love.

On this night, he reminded his disciples

that if the world hated them it hated him first.
We pray for those who are persecuted for their faith.
Lord, hear us
and give us your peace.

On this night, he accepted the cup of death

and looked forward to the new wine of the kingdom.
We remember those who have died in the peace of Christ.
Lord, hear us
and welcome all your children into paradise.

The Peace
Stand
The President says
Jesus says: ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.’
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.
Members of the congregation greet one another. Please be respectful of
others’ safety and their desire to keep distance.

Remain standing to sing

The Offertory Hymn during which the table is prepared and the
gifts of the people are gathered and presented.

Great God, your love has called us here,

as we, by love, for love were made.
Your living likeness still we bear,
though marred, dishonoured, disobeyed.
We come, with all our heart and mind
your call to hear, your love to find.
2
We come with self-inflicted pains
of broken trust and chosen wrong,
half-free, half-bound by inner chains,
by social forces swept along,
by powers and systems close confined,
yet seeking hope for humankind.
3
Great God, in Christ you call our name
and then receive us as your own,
not through some merit, right or claim,
but by your gracious love alone.
We strain to glimpse your mercy seat
and find you kneeling at our feet.
4
Then take the towel, and break the bread,
and humble us, and call us friends.
Suffer and serve till all are fed,
and show how grandly love intends
to work till all creation sings,
to fill all worlds, to crown all things.
5
Great God, in Christ you set us free
your life to live, your joy to share.
Give us your Spirit's liberty
to turn from guilt and dull despair
and offer all that faith can do
while love is making all things new.
Words: Brian Wren (b 1936) Tune: SURREY AM 169 (t622)

9
The President takes the bread and wine and praises God for his gifts
At the Eucharist we are with our crucified and risen Lord.
We know that it was not only our ancestors,
but we who were redeemed and brought forth from bondage to freedom,
from mourning to feasting.
We know that as he was with them in the upper room
so our Lord is here with us now.
Until the kingdom of God comes
let us celebrate this feast.
Blessed are you, Lord, God of the universe,
you bring forth bread from the earth.
Blessed be God for ever.
Blessed are you, Lord, God of the universe,
you create the fruit of the vine.
Blessed be God for ever.

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with you
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

It is right to give thanks and praise.
It is indeed right to give you thanks,
Father most holy, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
For on this night he girded himself with a towel
and, taking the form of a servant,
washed the feet of his disciples.
He gave us a new commandment
that we should love one another as he has loved us.
Knowing that his hour had come,
in his great love he gave this supper to his disciples
to be a memorial of his passion,
that we might proclaim his death until he comes again,
and feast with him in his kingdom.

Therefore earth unites with heaven

to sing a new song of praise;
we too join with angels and archangels
as they proclaim your glory without end:

10
The choir sings

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Holy, holy, holy Lord,

Dominus Deus Sabaoth. God of power and might.
Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest.

We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord;
and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit,
that broken bread and wine outpoured
may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.
On the night before he died,
that is, this very night,
he had supper with his friends
and, taking bread, he praised you.
He broke the bread, gave it to them and said:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.
When supper was ended he took the cup of wine.
Again he praised you, gave it to them and said:
Drink this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did,
in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice
made once for all upon the cross.
Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation,
we proclaim his death and resurrection
until he comes in glory.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus:

Dying you destroyed our death,
rising you restored our life:
Lord Jesus, come in glory.

Lord of all life,

help us to work together for that day
when your kingdom comes
and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth.
Look with favour on your people,
gather us in your loving arms
and bring us with all the saints
to feast at your table in heaven.

11
Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Every time we eat this bread and drink this cup,

we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

The Distribution of Communion

Please come up for Communion as directed by the stewards. All who are
regular communicants in their own tradition are welcome to receive the
sacrament. If you are not a communicant, you are welcome to come
forward at this point in the service to receive a blessing, keeping your
hands to your sides. Please ask the priest if you need a gluten-free host.
We request that you do not intinct (dip) your host in the wine but
either take a sip from the cup or remain with your head bowed. This is
for the reasons of good hygiene.

If you wish to receive communion without climbing the steps to the High
Altar, please join the line for the station in the North-East Transept.

We keep a prayerful silence during Communion to allow others to

prepare to receive the sacrament or pray afterwards.

During Communion, the choir sings the Agnus Dei

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Prayer after Communion

Silence is kept

Stand as the President says

Let us pray.
Lord Jesus Christ,
we thank you that in this wonderful sacrament
you have given us the memorial of your passion:
grant us so to reverence the sacred mysteries
of your body and blood
that we may know within ourselves
and show forth in our lives
the fruit of your redemption,
for you are alive and reign, now and for ever.
Amen.

The Stripping of the Sanctuary

During the following hymn the Blessed Sacrament is taken to the Altar of
Repose in Our Lady Undercroft

3
Of the glorious body telling, At the last great supper lying
O my tongue, its mysteries sing, Circled by his chosen band,
And the blood, all price excelling, Duly with the law complying,
Which the world’s eternal King, First he finished its command,
In a spotless womb once dwelling, Then, immortal food supplying,
Shed for this world’s ransoming. Gave himself by his own hand.

4
2
Given for us, for us descending, Word-made-flesh, by word he maketh
Of a virgin to proceed, Bread his very flesh to be;
He with us in converse blending, Each in wine Christ’s blood partaketh:
Scattered here the gospel seed, And if senses fail to see,
Till his sojourn drew to ending, Faith alone the true heart waketh
Which he closed in wondrous deed. To behold the mystery.
5
Therefore we, before him bending,
This great sacrament revere:
Types and shadows have their ending,
For the newer rite is here;
Faith, our outward sense befriending,
Makes the inward vision clear.
6
Glory let us give and blessing
To the Father and the Son,
Honour, might and praise addressing,
While eternal ages run;
Ever too his love confessing,
Who, from both, with both is one. Amen.

The Altar is stripped and the lights are extinguished as the choir sings
Psalm 22.1-21
My God, my God, look upon me; why hast thou forsaken me :
and art so far from my health, and from the words of my complaint?
14
O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou hearest not :
and in the night-season also I take no rest.
And thou continuest holy :
O thou worship of Israel.
Our fathers hoped in thee :
they trusted in thee, and thou didst deliver them.
They called upon thee, and were holpen :
they put their trust in thee, and were not confounded.
But as for me, I am a worm, and no man :
a very scorn of men, and the outcast of the people.
All they that see me laugh me to scorn :
they shoot out their lips, and shake their heads, saying,
He trusted in God, that he would deliver him :
let him deliver him, if he will have him.
But thou art he that took me out of my mother's womb :
thou wast my hope, when I hanged yet upon my mother's breasts.
I have been left unto thee ever since I was born :
thou art my God, even from my mother's womb.
O go not from me, for trouble is hard at hand :
and there is none to help me.
Many oxen are come about me :
fat bulls of Basan close me in on every side.
They gape upon me with their mouths :
as it were a ramping and a roaring lion.
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint :
my heart also in the midst of my body is even like melting wax.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my gums :
and thou shalt bring me into the dust of death.
For many dogs are come about me :
and the council of the wicked layeth siege against me.
They pierced my hands and my feet; I may tell all my bones :
they stand staring and looking upon me.
They part my garments among them :
and casts lots upon my vesture.
But be not thou far from me, O Lord :
thou art my succour, haste thee to help me.
Deliver my soul from the sword :
my darling from the power of the dog.
Save me from the lion's mouth :
thou hast heard me also from among the horns of the unicorns.

15
The Gethsemane Narrative (Mark 14.32-50) is then read from the pulpit

They went to a place called Gethsemane; and Jesus said to his disciples,
‘Sit here while I pray.’ He took with him Peter and James and John, and
began to be distressed and agitated. And he said to them, ‘I am deeply
grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake.’ And going a little
farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were
possible, the hour might pass from him. He said, ‘Abba, Father, for you
all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want,
but what you want.’ He came and found them sleeping; and he said to
Peter, ‘Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour?
Keep awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the
spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.’ And again he went away
and prayed, saying the same words. And once more he came and found
them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know
what to say to him. He came a third time and said to them, ‘Are you still
sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of
Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up, let us be going. See,
my betrayer is at hand.’

Immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve,

arrived; and with him there was a crowd with swords and clubs, from the
chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. Now the betrayer had given
them a sign, saying, ‘The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him and lead
him away under guard.’ So when he came, he went up to him at once
and said, ‘Rabbi!’ and kissed him. Then they laid hands on him and
arrested him. But one of those who stood near drew his sword and
struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. Then Jesus said to
them, ‘Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though
I were a bandit? Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching,
and you did not arrest me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled.’ All of them
deserted him and fled.

Silence is kept

Members of the congregation are asked to remain in their seats until the
choir and clergy have departed and to leave the building in silence

16
The Watch

Vigil before the Blessed Sacrament will be kept in Our Lady Undercroft
until midnight. All are welcome to stay, or depart and return.

The End of the Watch

At 11pm

O Lord, God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before you.
Let my prayer come into your presence; incline your ear to my cry.

In the darkness of this hour, we cry to the Lord;

in the prison of our despair, we take refuge in his mercy;
in the silence of our hearts, we yearn for his presence.

Jesus looked up to heaven and said:

‘Father, the hour has come;
glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you’

Christ was obedient unto death. Go now in his peace.

All depart in silence
