ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Threads from every part of this book lead back to Tom Brown Jr., who intro-
duced me to tracking and who showed that the hard-to-imagine is possible.
The complete dedication to the learning process and the honoring of the
track’s maker above all are lessons I will always carry with me.
Doug Gaulke made the book’s completion possible through his substantial
help with illustrations and knowledge about mammals outside my area, such
as the gray wolf and white-tailed deer. Paul Rezendes, Mark Elbroch, Matt
Gray, Renee Robison, and Dick Newell also contributed essential photos.
Marge Erickson merged her extensive tracking background with professional
editing skills in proofreading the manuscript.

Acknowledgments
The groundwork laid by dedicated tracking teachers over the past thirty years
has benefited all of us who study and teach the art. I would like to acknowl-
edge especially the pioneering work of Tom Hanratty, Charles Worsham, Jim
Halfpenny, Paul Rezendes, Jon Young, Susan Morse, and Mark Elbroch. More
recently the contributions of CyberTracker evaluators and instructors toward
expanding the tracking audience and its expertise continues to be especially
important.
I cannot list all of the dedicated Earth Skills tracking students who accom-
panied us as we learned. Many of these people field-tested early drafts of this
guide in classes and gave suggestions and encouragement. You know who
you are—thank you. Our First Nation friends Robin, Terry, and Barbara,
along with their extended family, helped to keep us humble and thankful.
Scott Cunningham’s music was more important than he knows.
Finally, the sacrifice and support I received from my wife, Mary, toward this
book cannot possibly be described and can be understood only by those who
know her. From carefree exploration to times of crushing focus, she was my
constant companion. She is a true tracker because she always finds what is
necessary. This project and my life have been blessed by her.

INTO THE ANIMAL’S WORLD
If you are already a tracker, you know what novice trackers will learn in their
first day: The animal whose tracks you just identified is going to call you out.
Where am I going, it will say. Why am I traveling alone? Why did I bypass this
perfectly good food? How recently was I here? Why did I take this side trail?
The tracks won’t answer everything, but they do tell you more than you
probably think. Mood, posture, speed, and personality. The reason for a
choice of a bedding site. The current place in this year’s rearing of young.
Deliberate avoidance of another of its species. An exploratory urge or hungry
focus.
Most importantly, the tracks begin the conversation between you and the
animal, the animal leading the way because it’s the one with the answers.
You don’t need to be an accomplished tracker to hold up your end of the
conversation, but it’s best to know how to read what else is in the tracks
besides the identity of its maker. And, it’s essential to bring in biology and
behavior too.
There are a lot of tools here: extensive notes about the biology of each animal,
many examples of track interpretation, and “Track Windows” suggesting
how your exploration can access an animal’s unique personality and biology.
If you are a beginning tracker, you will grow into some of these tools over
time. If you are an advanced tracker, you will find useful ones not found in
other references.
Remember that the opportunity to interact with the animal you are tracking,
whether it be a chipmunk or an elk, is special and sacred. The animal passed
here, in this way, only once. It left behind the signs of its body language, signs
of choices about food and travel, evidence of when it rested and where it ran.
Each of these threads draws inward to the animal’s mood and outward to its
