2. Water Literacy

nEcEssity of WatEr for family

Water is the element of life! We drink, bathe in, and use it to clean our clothes and dishes. It’s an
essential part of our day-to-day comfort and well-being.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average American household uses
more than 300 gallons of water daily. Most (70%) comes from indoor use, including showers, faucets,
toilets, and washing machines.

The table below provides estimated water usage for daily activities.

The folks at Water Footprint Calculator say the average at-home water use is 60 gallons per person
daily. However, the US Geological Survey puts the average at 80-100 gallons per person.

What Can I Do to Reduce My Water Usage?

1. Look for leaks

2. Update your showerhead

3. Turn off the tap while you brush

4. Don’t throw things away in the toilet

5. Only wash full loads

6. Update your appliances

EquipmEnt’s anD tools of WatEr filtration
Purifying water at home is a great way to ensure that you and your family are drinking clean, safe
water. It can be an intimidating process, however, since there is a lot of specialised equipment and
methods needed for effective water purification.
All of these types of equipment are necessary when trying to purify water.

Water Filters
A water filter is one of the most common water purification tools.
A water filter is a device that is meant to remove impurities from
water through a physical process.

Chemical Purification Systems

A chemical purification system uses chemical impurities to
purify water. These water purification systems are effective
against chemical impurities in water, but they cannot be
used to treat bacteria or viral impurities.

Ultraviolet Sterilization
Ultraviolet (UV) sterilization is a type of water purification
that uses ultraviolet light to kill viral impurities in water.
UV sterilization is often used in conjunction with other
water purification methods.

Water Purification Maintenance

Water purification equipment needs to be maintained to ensure that it is working properly and
effectively.

Conclusion
Water purification is a great way to ensure that you and your family are drinking clean, safe water.
With this guide, you can make sure that you have the equipment necessary to produce safe and
drinkable water for your home.

Rainwater collected from rooftop of the building is diverted through drainpipes to settlement or
filtration tank. After settlement filtered water is diverted to bore wells to recharge deep aquifers.
Abandoned bore wells can also be used for recharge.

Groundwater replenishment happens through direct recharge and in-lieu recharge. Water used for
direct recharge most often comes from flood flows, water conservation, recycled water,
desalination and water transfers.

Water also gets into the ground as farmers irrigate fields and orchards. Replenishment within the
context of groundwater management is accomplished through recharge at rate that exceeds natural
conditions, maintaining or improving groundwater elevation levels. Two recharge methods are used:
direct spreading and aquifer injection.

Managed aquifer recharge is the intentional recharge of water to suitable aquifers for subsequent
recovery or to achieve environmental benefits. Managed aquifer recharge occurs through injection
wells or the use of ponds and infiltration basins. Natural treatment processes in the aquifer can
improve the quality of the water, though some pre-treatment of the source water may be required to
make sure that the quality of the receiving groundwater is maintained or improved.
3. Disaster Management

Accidents – Unexpected event, typically sudden in nature and associated with injury, loss, or harm.
Accidents are a common feature of the human experience and result in injury or permanent
disability to large numbers of people worldwide every year. Many accidents also involve damage to
or loss of property.

Riots – Riot defines the moment when a protest or an act of civil disobedience escalates into
violence (between two crowds), either accidentally or on purpose. The violence can be targeted
toward a hostile group of people or toward damaging the physical environment, riots are often a
mixture of both.

War – War is against human nature because it leads to casualties, destruction and poverty, and
spreads fear and unrest among all people. Nations are not war-inclined by nature, but rather tend to
avoid war by all means.
Fire – Fire is one of the most destructive manmade disasters of all time. Raise an alarm and inform
the Fire Brigade on Telephone No. 101 • Attack the fire with available equipment, if you can do so
without undue risk. Leave the premises by the nearest available exit. Close all doors and windows
behind you.

Gas Leakage – A gas leak refers to a leak of natural gas or another gaseous product from a pipeline
or other containment into any area where the gas should not be present. Gas leaks can be hazardous
to health as well as the environment. As every report of a gas leak is a potentially hazardous
situation, we recommend you evacuate the premises and wait for our technician to arrive.
