Tyres. The 265/50 R19 WR SUV 3 is
the product of an ongoing project
focused specifically on reducing
rolling resistance. Technologies
derived from the work have
already been adopted in Nokian’s
WR D4 winter car tire, which was
introduced earlier this year, and will
be used in other products, too
Says Olli Seppälä, Nokian’s
development manager of car
tires, “In December last year we
introduced the first A-rated winter
tire in rolling resistance – the 155/70
R19 Hakkapeliitta R2 – which is
fitted to the BMW i3. In February
we launched the first A-rated car

sizes of the new WR D4, so this

starkly as “an aggressive cancer”. And as Sergio Lasca,

clear (see sidebar, P is for Pirelli), tire makers are not
exempt from having their products or brands copied.
But according to Harm Voortman, president
and CEO of VMI Group, IP infringement is also
a growing problem for manufacturers of tire

VMI is by no means the only supplier having

Mesnac, the largest Chinese supplier of tire and rubber

Another attorney, Chris Bailey, is a specialist

“It’s usually a good idea to file more IP in

classes of patent other than invention patents –
for example using the utility model, similar to
what you’d find in Germany, which only lasts
10 years and can accommodate incremental
improvements that you might not file as a patent in
your home country. These can be very effective.

“Patents have to be written technically and have to disclose everything
– you’re not really allowed to write a patent that hides too much or it may
be invalidated,” advises IP lawyer Chris Bailey. “In any industry, the patent
has to tell you with some specificity what the inventive aspect is, but it is
not an instruction manual on how to make the product. There is a lot of
know-how you don’t have to reveal in a patent and certainly for machinery
manufacturers that can be a key element – not disclosing what alloy you
use in a particular component to give it a particular performance, or the
component tolerances, for example.” n

Nature’s finest
Several tire manufacturers have established research projects to
evaluate alternative sources of natural rubber. But is this really
necessary and what can be done in the short term to balance
the supply and demand of Hevea brasiliensis rubber?

s is the case with other commodities,
price is a major determinant affecting
the supply of natural rubber. To
sustain prices at acceptable levels,
world supply must not exceed
demand, and vice versa.
Research recently published stated that projected
natural rubber demand could require another 4.3-8.5
million hectares of land by 2024. The Association of
Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANRPC), an
intergovernmental organization that safeguards and
represents the interests of member countries, is looking
for ways to manage expansion to balance the supply of
and the demand for natural rubber in the long term.
Sheela Thomas, secretary general at the ANRPC,
says, “The rise in natural rubber price from 2010,
and the subsequent jump in 2011, saw the TSR grade
reach US$6 per kg. This price level attracted many
newcomers into the industry and saw expansion of
rubber plantations outside the traditional areas. A
continuous fall in price since the end 2013 to the
current level of US$1.50 per kg – or only 25% of
the price in 2011 – has brought the income of large
sections of rubber farmers below subsistence level.”
As a result, farmers feel they are not getting enough
return for their work: “Many farmers find it hard
to justify production within the present price level
and look for other income opportunities. Income
from rubber is not enough to cover production
costs, particularly labor costs, whereby many
landowners are unable to pay the shared revenue or
minimum wages to tappers,” Thomas explains.
The ANRPC has made several suggestions to
growers to help balance the supply of natural rubber
such as replanting, intercropping, diversification
to other crops, and tapping holidays.
Although price remains the principal factor
in the sustainability of natural rubber, other key
issues could have an effect. These include climate
change, which has an impact on tapping frequency,
and fields, which can be damaged by floods, for
example. Governmental policies are also important,
as Thomas explains: “Policy setting for sustainable
development takes into consideration not only
environmental sustainability, but also the requirement
for economic and social sustainability. The objective
of economic sustainability is to increase the income
of rubber growers, while social sustainability
requires rubber production and processing practices
to be carried out in a socially acceptable way.”
The ANRPC is also helping producers and
consumers to rekindle relationships in order to
improve mutual cooperation. “The producers feel
that they are not getting enough return for their
work. Meanwhile, consumers feel they are not
assured of the steady supply of natural rubber.
“There is no reason for the producers to
produce rubber unless there is a demand from

“What we need is a better understanding

closer interaction between the producers.”

India and Malaysia have been running out of land.
As a result, attention is turning to neighboring
countries. Ali Hines, a land campaigner at Global

A

believes that its wireless network

in smart factories of the future.
Afache’s parent company, Hansung

operates three subsidiaries. Afache’s revenue alone
increased by an impressive 54.9% in 2014, a large
proportion of which was generated from emerging
markets, particularly China and Hungary.
That is perhaps thanks to its established
research and development philosophy, which is
represented in its three R&D centers in Korea and
an annual investment of over 6% of its turnover.
Jongil Kim, Afache’s CEO, identifies a
central R&D focus for the company: “The latest

It will be commercialized later in 2015.
“Many components used in the inspection process,
for example the control monitors, have already
been automated, but they are not perfect,” notes
Kim. “We have also been developing an unmanned

the end of this year. It will help streamline processes,
making them more efficient and cost effective.”
