SECTION B (20 Marks)

Question 3

(i) A half-metre rule is pivoted at the 0 cm mark. A 200 g weight hangs (3)
downwar d from the 40 cm mark. A 250 g weight is placed on the same side of
the pivot but acts in the opposite direction (upward) to balance the rule.
(a) Draw a clear diagram showing both weights and the pivot.
(b) At what position should the 250 g weight be placed to balance the rule?
Assume the rule has negligible weight.

(ii) A mass 'm' is dropped from the top of a tower. The tower is divided into three (:
equal parts PQ, QR, and RS, each of height 'h'. The acceleration due to
gravity is 'g'.
(a) What is the gravitational potential energy of the stone at point P (the top
of the tower)?
(b) What will its kinetic energy be when it reaches point R (2h below the
top)?

(iii) For each of the following scenarios, state whether the work done by gravity is
positive, negative or zero.
(a) A person walks on a levelled road.
(b) A person climbs a staircase.
(c) A ball rolling down the slope.
Also, explain why a work done by a fielder when he takes a catch in a cricket
match is negative.
