Reporting Verbs – Exercises (B2)

Explanation & Examples


Reporting verbs are used to report what someone else said without repeating their exact words.
Different reporting verbs require different grammatical structures.

1) Verb + that-clause (admit, claim, deny, explain, suggest, promise)


Example: She admitted that she was wrong.

2) Verb + object + infinitive (advise, remind, tell, warn, encourage)


Example: He advised me to take the bus.

3) Verb + -ing form (admit, deny, recommend, suggest)


Example: She denied cheating on the test.

4) Verb + object + of + -ing (accuse, blame, congratulate, thank)


Example: They accused him of stealing the money.

Exercise 1 – Matching
Match the reporting verb with the correct structure:

1. deny
2. warn
3. suggest
4. remind
5. accuse

a) verb + object + to-infinitive


b) verb + -ing form
c) verb + that-clause
d) verb + object + of + -ing
e) verb + (that-clause or -ing form)

Exercise 2 – Transform Sentences


Rewrite the sentences using the reporting verbs in brackets:

1. “Don’t forget to call me,” my mother said. (remind)

3. “Why don’t we order pizza?” she said. (suggest)
4. “You stole my idea!” Mark said to John. (accuse)

Answer the following questions using the correct reporting verbs:

3. What would you suggest doing if a friend feels sad?
