Reflection Paper on Hacksaw Ridge
Character Formation, Leadership and Management 1 – Nationalism and
Patriotism
My Reflection Paper to The movie Hacksaw Ridge, is a very inspiring
and emotional film that is based from the true story of Desmond Doss,
a Seventh-day Adventist and a combat medic who served in World War
II. What makes Doss different is that he go to war without carrying any
weapon, but still manage to save 75 wounded soldiers in the Battle of
Okinawa. His story is not only about bravery, but also about strong
values and moral strength. Watching this movie help me understand
more about character formation, real leadership, and the true meaning
of nationalism and patriotism.
Desmond Doss show me what true character means. He is a man with
strong faith, discipline, and a clear belief in what is right. Even when
many people in his unit insult him or hit him, he never gave up his
principles. He didn’t want to hurt people, but still want to serve the
country. That’s why he chose to be a medic. He stand strong with his
beliefs, even if it’s hard. For me, this is a big lesson. Sometimes, we
face challenges or people may not agree with us, but we must stick to
what we know is right.
In leadership and management, Doss is also a good example even if he
was not a commander or officer. He didn’t give orders or control
others, but his actions become an inspiration to many. He show that
leadership is not always about power, but about serving others. He
save many soldiers even when he could be killed. He show true care
and love for his fellow men. In management, sometimes leaders forget
to be human. Doss show us that to be a great leader, we must be
willing to sacrifice and help others.
The movie also give us a different idea of nationalism and patriotism.
Usually, we think of patriotic people as soldiers who fight and kill for
the country. But Doss didn’t kill anyone. Still, he is a true patriot
because he love his country and want to protect the lives of soldiers.
He serve the country in a peaceful way, by saving lives not taking
them. His form of nationalism is based on life, faith, and respect for
others. I believe that’s a very deep and strong kind of patriotism.
Hacksaw also make me realize that being a hero is not only for those
who fight with guns like Jose Rizal. Doss did not kill enemy, but he is
still a hero. He receive the Medal of Honor, the highest award in the US
military. That means people recognize his bravery and sacrifice. I learn
that even simple people, when they act with love and courage, can be
great heroes and great patriots.
In conclusion, the film Hacksaw Ridge is more than just a war story. It
is a lesson about character, leadership, and love for country. Desmond
Doss is a true example of a person who serve not only with body, but
also with heart and faith. As a criminology students, we should follow
his example in our own small ways. Be honest, be brave, and help
others. That is the real meaning of character and patriotism.
