STAGE II: CHEMISTRY 2A - ACTUAL PRACTICAL

A CHECKLIST OF APPARATUSES AND CHEMICALS

1. IMPORTANT
AS HEAD OF AEP LEARNING CENTRE MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE
APPARATI AND CHEMICALS INDICATED IN THIS CHECKLIST ARE
AVAILABLE IN THE LEARNING CENTRE LABORATORY. SOME OF THEM
WILL BE USED FOR THE CHEMISTRY PRACTICAL DURING MOCK
EXAMINATION. GREAT CARE MUST BE TAKEN NOT TO DIVULGE THESE
INSTRUCTIONS TO BOTH, CANDIDATES AND TO ANY UNAUTHORISED
PERSON EITHER DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY. 3 HOURS INSTRUCTIONS
FOR THIS PAPER WILL BE PROVIDED.
2. In addition to the normal fittings and reagents in a normal setting of a Standard
Chemistry Laboratory each candidate will require the followings:
2.1 Apparatus

 1 pipette (20 or 25cm3)  1 heat source


 1 burette (50cm3)  1 test tube holder
 1 titrating flask 250cm3  Thermometer
 4 beakers 250 cm3  NECTA Qualitative Analysis Guide sheet
 Stop watch  3 Blue and red strips of litmus paper
 Measuring cylinder (100cm3)  2 Conical flasks (250 mls)
 Measuring cylinder (10cm3)  Wire gauze
 4 Pyrex test tubes  1 White tile
 1 Retort stand with its accesories  Test tube brush
 Test tube rack  1 spatula
 A4 white paper  1 watch glass
1.1 Chemicals

 300ml distilled water  1g Sulphuric acid


 4g Hydrated sodium carbonate  1.5g Sodium carbonate
 2g Sodium hydroxide  1g Potassium iodine
 2g Potassium hydroxide  1g Ammonia solution
 3 g Ammonium chloride  3g Lead nitrate
 3 g Copper (II) Nitrate  2g Sodium thiosulphate
 1g Hydrochloric acid  3g Copper Carbonate
 0.05g Methyl orange  3g Iron (II) sulphate
 1g Nitric acid solution  0.05g Phenolphthalein
 3g Magnesium Sulphate  1g Silver nitrate

2.3 Other requirements

 Labels - Prepare a marker pen and masking tape for labelling chemicals and solutions.
 2 graph papers per candidate.
