William has been learning about fossils and large prehistoric mammals in his science class
at school. Last week, his teacher decided to take the class to a special beach where they
could look for fossils. William was very excited. He had never found a fossil before. "Look
carefully, and you might find small ammonites or trilobites" said Mrs. Thomas. The children
looked under rocks, they dug holes in the sand and they climbed up the cliffs. But by
lunchtime, nobody had found anything. "Don't worry, children. Let's have lunch now" said
Mrs. Thomas. William was feeling sad. Before the start of the day, he had wanted to find a
fossil, but now he just felt tired. He climbed onto a large, limestone rock where he could have
his lunch by himself. He was eating his sandwich when suddenly he saw something below
in the sand. When he looked more closely, it was a small ammonite 100 million years old!
