PAIR OF LINEAR EQUATION IN TWO VARIABLES
1. A two-digit number is 4 more than 6 times the sum of its digit. If 18 is subtracted from the number, the digits are reversed. Find
the number.
2. The sum of the digits of a two digit number is 9. Also, nine times this number is twice the number obtained by reversing the order
of the digits. Find the number.
3. Seven times a two-digit number is equal to four times the number obtained by reversing the order of its digit. If the difference
between the digits is 3, then find the number.
4. The sum of a two-digit number and the number formed by interchanging its digit is 110. If 10 is subtracted from the original
number, the new number is 4 more than 5 times the sum of the digits of the original number. Find the original number.
5. The sum of numerator and denominator of a fraction is 12. If the denominator is increased by 3 then the fraction becomes . Find
the fraction.
6. In a given fraction, if the numerator is multiplied by 2 and the denominator is reduced by 5, we get . But if the numerator of the
given fraction is increased by 8 and the denominator is doubled, we get . Find the fraction.
7. If twice the son’s age in years is added to the mother’s age, the sum is 70 years. But if twice the mother’s age is added to the son’s
age, the sum is 95 years. Find the age of the mother and her son.
8. A man’s age is three times the sum of the ages of his two sons. After 5 years his age will be twice the sum of the ages of his two
sons. Find the age of the man.
9. A and B are friends and their ages differ by 2 years. A’s father D is twice as old as A and B is twice as old as his sister C. The age of
D and C differ by 40 years. Find the ages of A and B.
10. The ages of two friends Ani and Biju differ by 3 years. Ani’s father Dharam is twice as old as Ani and Biju is twice as old as his
sister Cathy. The ages of Cathy and Dharam differ by 30 years. Find the ages of Ani and Biju.
11. A train covered a certain distance at a uniform speed. If the train would have been 10 km/h faster, it would have taken 2 hours
less than the scheduled time. And, if the train were slower by 10 km/h; it would have taken 3 hours more than the scheduled time.
Find the distance covered by the train.
12. Points A and B are 90 km apart from each other on a highway. A car starts from A and another from B at the same time. If they go
in the same direction they meet in 9 hours and if they go in opposite directions they meet in hours. Find their speeds.
13. Places A and B are 100 km apart on a highway. One car starts from A and another from B at the same time. If the cars travel in the
same direction at different speeds, they meet in 5 hours. If they travel towards each other, they meet in 1 hour. What are the
speeds of the two cars?
14. Two places A and B are 120 km apart on a highway. A car starts from A and another from B at the same time. If the cars move in
the same direction at different speeds, they meet in 6 hours. If they travel towards each other, they meet in 1 hours 12 minutes.
Find the speeds of the two cars.
15. A boat goes 30 km upstream and 44 km downstream in 10 hours. In 13 hours, it can go 40 km upstream and 55 km down-stream.
Determine the speed of the stream and that of the boat in still water.
16. Ritu can row downstream 20 km in 2 hours, and upstream 4 km in 2 hours. Find her speed of rowing in still water and the speed
of the current.
17. A boat goes 30 km upstream and 44 km downstream in 10 hours. In 13 hours, it can go 40 km upstream and 55 km down-stream.

18. A boat covers 32 km upstream and 36 km downstream in 7 hours. In 9 hours, it can cover 40 km upstream and 48 km down-

19. A man travels 370 km partly by train and partly by car. If he covers 250 km by train and the rest by car, it takes him 4 hours. But if
he travels 130 km by train and the rest by car, he takes 18 minutes longer. Find the speed of the train and that of the car.
20. Roohi travels 300 km to her home partly by train and partly by bus. She takes 4 hours if she travels 60 km by train and the
remaining by bus. If she travels 100 km by train and the remaining by bus, she takes 10 minutes longer. Find the speed of the train
and the bus separately
21. 2 women and 5 men can together finish an embroidery work in 4 days, while 3 women and 6 men can finish it in 3 days. Find the
time taken by 1 woman alone to finish the work, and also that taken by 1 man alone
22. 2 men and 7 boys can do a piece of work in 4 days. The same work is done in 3 days by 4 men and 4 boys. How long would it take
one man and one boy to do it alone.
23. 8 men and 12 boys can finish a piece of work in 10 days while 6 men and 8 boys finish it in 14 days. Find the time taken by one
man alone and by one boy alone to finish the work.
24. 8 men and 12 boys can finish a piece of work in 5 days while 6 men and 8 boys finish it in 7 days. Find the time taken by 1 man
alone and by 1 boy alone to finish the work.
25. 2 men and 5 boys can do a piece of work in 4 days. The same work is done by 3 men and 6 boys in 3 days. . Find the time taken by
1 man alone and by 1 boy alone to finish the work.
26. A part of monthly hostel charges is fixed and the remaining depends on the number of days one has taken food in the mess. When
a student A takes food for 20 days she has to pay Rs 1000 as hostel charges whereas a student B, who takes food for 26 days, pays
Rs 1180 as hostel charges. Find the fixed charges and the cost of food per day.
27. A lending library has a fixed charge for the first three days and an additional charge for each day thereafter. Sarita paid Rs 27 for a
book kept for seven days, while Sanaya paid Rs 21 for the book she kept for five days. Find the fixed charge and the charge for
each extra day.
28. From a bus stand in Bangalore, if we buy 2 tickets to Malleswaram and 3 tickets to Yeshwanthpur, the total cost is Rs 46; but if we
buy 3 tickets to Malleswaram and 5 tickets to Yeshwanthpur the total cost is Rs 74. Find the fares from the bus stand to
Malleswaram, and to Yeshwanthpur.
29. The taxi charges in a city consist of a fixed charge together with the charge for the distance covered. For a distance of 10 km, the
charge paid is Rs 105 and for a journey of 15 km, the charge paid is Rs 155. What are the fixed charges and the charge per km?

30. The coach of a cricket team buys 7 bats and 6 balls for Rs 3800. Later, she buys 3 bats and 5 balls for Rs 1750. Find the cost of each
bat and each ball.
31. The cost of 2 pencils and 3 erasers is Rs 9 and the cost of 4 pencils and 6 erasers is Rs 18. Find the cost of each pencil and each
eraser.
32. 5 pencils and 7 pens together cost Rs 50, whereas 7 pencils and 5 pens together cost Rs 46. Find the cost of one pencil and that of
one pen.
33. The area of a rectangle remains the same if the length is increased by 7m and the breadth is decreased by 3m. The area remains
unaffected if the length is decreased by 7m and the breadth is increased by 5m. Find the dimensions of the rectangle.
34. The area of a rectangle gets reduced by 8 sq.m., if its length is reduced by 5m and breadth is increased by 3m. If we increase the
length by 3m and the breadth by 2m, the area increases by 74 sq.m. Find the length and the breadth of the rectangle.
35. The area of a rectangle gets reduced by 9 square units, if its length is reduced by 5 units and breadth is increased by 3 units. If we

39. Due to ongoing Corona virus outbreak, Raj Medical store has started selling masks of decent quality. The store is selling two types
of masks currently type A and type B . The cost of one type A mask is Rs. 15 and of one type B mask is Rs. 20. In the month of April,
2020, the store sold 100 masks for total sales of Rs. 1650.
Due to great demand and short supply, the store has increased the price of each type by Rs. 5 from May 1, 2020. In the month of
May, 2020, the store sold 310 masks for total sales of Rs. 6875.
(a) How many masks of each type were sold in the month of April?
(b) If the store had sold 50 masks of each type, what would be its sales in the month of April?
