/k/ Articulation in Isolation

Adult Teaching Suggestions


Aim
For the student to articulate /k/ in isolation (with a success rate of 80%).
Refer to the /k/ Sound Cards to represent the sound when completing the following activities.

Activity One – Kite Colouring


Show the student one of the /k/ Sound Cards and ask them to
make the sound. Every time they make the sound accurately,
they can colour in a section of the Kite Colouring Sheet. If the
student is unable to make the sound, use prompts, such as ‘make
the sound at the back of your mouth’ or ‘use the back part of
your tongue’.
Activity Two – Hide and Seek
Decide who is going to hide the /k/ Sound Cards and who is
going to find them. The cards should be hidden around the room
while the student finding them closes their eyes and counts to
ten. When a card has been found, the student takes it to an adult
and makes the sound. The adult should listen carefully to hear if
the target sound is being used. If the target sound is not being
used, the adult should repeat and emphasise the target sound.
Continue until all the cards have been found.

Activity Three – Skittles


Place the /k/ Sound Cards under a set of skittles. The student
should aim to knock the skittles down in order to find a card
underneath. When a card has been found, the student takes it to
an adult and makes the sound. The adult should listen carefully
to hear if the target sound is being used. If the target sound is
not being used, the adult should repeat and emphasise the target
sound. The student then repeats this process until all the skittles
have been knocked down.

Top Tips for Making the /k/ Sound


1. Describe the /k/ sound as being a ‘back sound’.
2. Ask the student to hold down the tip of their tongue with their finger or a lollipop stick. This will
allow the back of their tongue to lift as the front of their tongue is pressed down under their finger/
lollipop stick. Be aware of the gag reflex – ensure only the front part of their tongue is held down.
3. Lying down on the floor allows the tongue to fall to the back of the mouth, making the /k/ sound
easier to make.
