History of The Sacred Heart of Jesus
The devotion to the Heart of Jesus has medieval origins, with the writings
of Saint Matilda of Hackeborn, Saint Gertrude of Helfta, and Saint Angela of
Foligno the oldest testimonies. However, the most reliable source

In the Roman rite, the feast is of 1st Class and is celebrated on the VI feria (Friday)

The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus gained momentum when it was embraced as
devotion particular to the Apostolate of Prayer (founded on December 3rd
in 1844 by Father Francisco Javier Gautrelet, SJ). In 1861, a child was born in France,
first publication to promote devotion to the Heart of Jesus: The
Messenger. Soon similar publications emerged all over the world.
In 1917, during the apparitions of Fatima, the angel and the Virgin taught the
children to pray and respond to the designs of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
