Moscoso lineage
The lineage of Moscoso comes from one of the four most ancient families.

Counts of Altamira and Monteagudo.- Marquises of Almazán, etc.
I. Said Pedro Vidal de Moscoso, Lord of Altamira, contracted
marriage to Doña Teresa Sánchez de Ulloa, from a very noble lineage in
the province of Orense, which later belonged to the Counts of
Monterrey. These spouses are buried in the main chapel of the
Convent of Santo Domingo, in the city of Santiago de Compostela.
They left the following children:
1st Lope de Moscoso and Ulloa, who follows, and

II. Lope Pérez de Moscoso married doña Mayor de Novoa (daughter of

marriage with doña Urraca de Campo, and they had
V. Ruy Sánchez de Moscoso y Campo, born in 1420 and called
"el Bravo", who was lord of the Houses of Altamira, Ulloa and Monterrey
and one of the noblest knights of his time. He had as his wife
Lady Inés de Limia (daughter of Alvaro Ruiz de Limia and lady Inés of)
Sotomayor). He died in the battle of Nájera and left the following children:

VI. Rodrigo de Moscoso y Limia, Lord of the houses of Moscoso,
Altamira, Ulloa and Monterrey married Doña Juana de Castro (daughter of
Alonso de Castro, Lord of Castroverde, and Doña María de
Guzmán). They had

Fernando Ruiz de Castro, Count of Lemos, and Doña Teresa of
Andrade). From that union were born

XV. Lope de Moscoso Osario y Castro, originally from Compostela, was
sixth Count of Altamira, Knight of the Order of Santiago since the

XVII. Lope de Moscoso Osorio y Mendoza, also known as Lope
Hurtado de Mendoza y Moscoso was the eighth Count of Monteagudo,
fourth Marquis of Almazán, Gentleman of the Chamber of His
Majesty and Commander of Hinojosa in the Order of Santiago. The
King Philip III granted him the Grandeur of Spain in 1614.

XVIII. This Gaspar de Moscoso y Córdova was the eighth Count of
Altamira, in succession to his grandfather, ninth Count of Monteagudo,
fifth Marquis of Almazán, sixth Marquis of Poza, Gentleman of
Chamber of Her Majesty and Commander of Beas in the Order of
Santiago. He died in Madrid on May 23, 1664, at the age of thirty-three.

Altamira, tenth Count of Monteagudo, sixth Marquis of Almazán,
seventh Marquis of Poza, Grandee of Spain, Ambassador in Rome and
Viceroy of Valencia and Sardinia. He married twice: the first time, with lady
Mariana de Benavides Carrillo y Toledo (sister of doña Ana
Antonia, Duchess of Osuna and Marchioness of Frómista, and of lady
Angela, Duchess of Frías), and the second, with Lady Angela of Aragon
(daughter of Luis de Aragón, sixth Duke of Segorbe and Cardona,
Marquis of Comares and Pallaro, and of Doña María Teresa de
Benavides, his second wife and Chief Lady of the Queen). He passed away.

seventeenth Count of Altamira, Count of Trastamara, tenth
seventh Duke of Sessa, Marquis of the Eagle, twice Grand of

Grand Cross of Carlos III and Gentleman of the Chamber with exercise and
servitude. He was born in Madrid on December 16, 1847, and died in
the same village in 1923. He had married on December 1, 1873 with
Doña María del Pilar Jordán de Urries y Ruiz de Arana, Lady of the
Reina and of the Order of María Luisa, born in Zaragoza on the 21st of
June 1852 (daughter of the Marquises of Ayerbe, Grandees of

Madrid, August 22, 1904, and
c) María de la Consolación Osorio de Moscoso and Moreno of the
Serna, born in Madrid on January 19, 1909.
XXVIII. Francisco de Asís Osorio de Moscoso y Jordán de Urries was
eighteenth Count of Altamira and Grand of Spain, Duke of
Maqueda, Marquis of Astorga, Master of Zaragoza and
Gentleman of His Majesty. Born in Madrid on December 4th
1874 and married twice: the first, in Madrid, on December 8 of
1897, with Mrs. María de los Dolores de Reinoso y Queralt, of the
Countesses of Fuenclara, Grandees of Spain, passed away on June 28
1905, and the second, in 1911, with Mrs. Dolores de Taramona y Díez
of Entresoto daughter of Manuel Taramona and Sáinz and of Mrs. Ramona
Casiana Díaz de Entresoto and Goicoechea). From the first marriage
they were born

Duchess of Maqueda, Marchioness of Astorga and the Eagle, Grandee of
Spain, born in Madrid on June 30, 1899 and married in

2nd María de la Soledad Osorio de Moscoso y Reinoso, Duchess of
Santángelo and Lady of the Queen, born in Madrid on January 13th
1901 and married on April 28, 1920 to Joaquín de Sentmenat and
Sarriera, Marquis of Ciutadilla and successor in the Marquisate of
Sentmenat, Grand of Spain.
3rd Gerardo Osorio de Moscoso y Reinoso, born in Madrid on the 9th of
November 1903, and

The Moscoso family of Seville
Another house of Moscoso, highly esteemed, was located in the city of
Seville, and from there it was
I. Suero Vázquez de Moscoso, originally from the Moscoso estate in
Galicia, which is established in Seville during the time of King Don
Enrique III. He was Twenty-four of the mentioned city and Lord of Los
Molares, village of the judicial district of Utrera, in the same province.
He wore the habit of the Order of Santiago and married Teresa de
Figueroa. (sister of Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa, Master of

Mosquera, who married Enrique de Guzmán, third Count of Niebla,

from Figueroa and Moscoso, which continues, and
3rd María de Moscoso y Figueroa, wife of Pedro Vázquez de

IV. Cristóbal de Moscoso y Ribera, also called Cristóbal de
Mosquera was Twenty-four of Seville and General Captain of three thousand
men, at the front of whom marched to the aid of Brittany, but
he drowned on the trip. He was married to Doña Mayor de Villafranca, and
they had the following children:
1st Suero Vázquez de Moscoso y Villafranca, who follows,

V. Suero Vázquez de Moscoso y Villafranca, Twenty-fourth of Seville,

THE MOSCOSO OF BADAJOZ
I. Francisco de Moscoso y Melo (second son of Gómez de
Moscoso and Figueroa, also called Gómez Suárez de Figueroa and
Moscoso, and his wife Mrs. Beatriz Sánchez de Melo, cited in the
paragraph II of the branch of the Moscoso of Seville), had as a wife
Mrs. María de Vera, from Mérida (Badajoz), and she bore in her.
II. Rodrigo de Moscoso y Vera, born in Badajoz, who married
Mrs. Isabel Maldonado y Figueroa, of the same nature (daughter of Pedro
Maldonado de Sotomayor and lady Elvira de Figueroa, both of
Coria (Cáceres). It was his son.
III. Francisco de Moscoso Maldonado, born in Badajoz and
Knight of the Order of Santiago, in which he entered in 1598

IV. Gómez de Moscoso y Martel was born in Seville, and joined in
marriage to Mrs. Josefa Estefanía de Omazur and Keysca, in the same
nature (daughter of Nicolás de Omazur, native of Antwerp, and of Mrs.
Elena Keysca, originally from Brussels, all in Belgium). From that union
he was a son
V. Joaquín de Moscoso y Omazur, native of Seville, who celebrated his
link with Mrs. Angela de Baena y Angulo, of the same nature
(daughter of Salvador de Baena and Salinas, native of Seville and Knight of)
the Order of Calatrava, and of Doña María Ana de Angulo, native of
Montilla (Córdoba). They had
VI. Ramón de Moscoso y Baena, a native of Seville and Knight of the
Order of Charles III, in which he entered on April 21, 1798.
The Moscosos of Ecija
Lords and Counts of the Towers of Alcorrin, Marquises of Cultera and Dukes of
Aljete
I. María Suárez de Moscoso y Melo (fourth daughter of Gómez de
Moscoso and Figueroa, also called Gómez Suárez de Figueroa and
Moscoso and his wife Doña Beatriz Sánchez de Melo, cited in the
paragraph II of the branch of Seville), married twice: the first time, with
Alfonso Páez Castillejo, Lord of Villaharta and Twenty-four of Córdoba,
and the second, with Fernando Sánchez de Badajoz (third son of
Alfonso Sánchez de Badajoz and Lady María Gil de Orenalla). Of
the first link had no succession, arising from the second
II. Fernán Sánchez de Moscoso, who married in Córdoba with doña
Isabel de Zayas and they had these children:
1st María de Moscoso y Zayas, nun at Santa Florentina de Ecija.
Beatriz de Moscoso y Zayas, also called Bea triz Sánchez
of Badajoz, wife of Martín Fernández Portocarrero, Lord of the
Palma, who made her a mother of
a) Urraca Portocarrero y Moscoso, who married in Ecija to Francisco
Eslava Cabeza de Vaca, and
3rd Fernán Yáñez de Moscoso, who follows.
III. This Fernán Yáñez de Moscoso was the first of this family
who settled in Ecija, whose Mayor's Office was obtained by grace of the
King Philip IV. He married Doña Beatriz of
Montemayor and Moscoso, their debt, Lady of the villa and Castle of
Montalbán de Córdoba, which he sold around 1505 to Pedro Carrillo
from Mendoza, second Marquis of Priego, to establish the mayorazgo
of the Towers of Alcorrín, composed of the inheritances of
Guadalbuey, Alcorrín, la Cantera, Cortillos, Benavides, Casas Altas and
others. This marriage had the following eleven children:
1st Alonso de Moscoso y Montemayor, native of Ecija, Lord of the
inheritances of Guadalbuey, Mayor of Baeza and Knight
of the Order of Santiago.
2nd Garci Méndez de Moscoso y Montemayor, who follows.
3rd Bernal Yáñez de Moscoso y Montemayor.
4. Juan de Moscoso y Montemayor, Lord of Cortillos.
5th Lope de Moscoso and Montemayor.
6th Catalina de Moscoso y Montemayor, wife of Francisco
Fernández de Córdova and Benavides, fifth Lord of Guadalcázar.
7th Isabel de Moscoso y Montemayor.
8th Teresa de Moscoso and Montemayor, both nuns at Santa
Isabel of Ecija.
9th Inés de Moscoso y Montemayor, nun at Santa Florentina,

1st Garci Méndez de Moscoso and Zayas, who follows.
2nd Francisco de Moscoso y Zayas.
3rd Alvaro de Moscoso y Zayas.
4th Alonso de Moscoso y Zayas, Dominican religious.
5th Beatriz de Moscoso y Zayas, and
6th Luisa de Moscoso y Zayas, also called Luisa Ponce de
Lion.
VI. Garci Méndez de Moscoso y Zayas was a native of Ecija and fourth
Lord of the Towers of Alcorrin. He celebrated his wedding in Antequera, in
1579, with Doña María de Córdova Velasco y Navarro (daughter of
Bartolomé de Córdova y Velasco and Doña Catalina Navarro.
They procreated
1st Luis de Moscoso y Córdova, who continues.
2nd Cristóbal de Moscoso y Córdova, born in Ecija, who was
College at the Major of Cuenca in Salamanca, of the Royal Council of
Indians and Knight of the Order of Santiago dated November 2
from 1644. He married Doña Mencía de Córdova y Mena, a native of
Antequera (daughter of Alonso de Córdova y Velasco, Familiar of the Saint
Official from Granada and native of Antequera, and of Mrs. Juana de Mena
Valdés, native of Guadalajara). They had this son.
a) Isidro Antonio de Moscoso y Córdova, a native of Madrid, who was
Knight of the Order of Calatrava, admitted in 1641. Married to
Mrs. Antonia Cortés y Bravo de Saravia, native of Ibdes, near
Calatayud, Zaragoza (daughter of García Cortés, native of Calatayud, and
of Doña María Bravo de Saravia, native of Hinojosa del Campo,
Soria). From that link were born:
1st Pedro de Moscoso y Cortés, native of Madrid and Knight of the
same Order of Calatrava in which he entered in 1670, and
2nd Jacinto de Moscoso y Cortés, a native of Madrid, who wore the
same habit of Calatrava on the same date as his brother.
b) Manuel de Moscoso y Córdova, born in Madrid, Collegiate in the
Mayor of Cuenca in Salamanca, of the Royal Council of Castile and
Knight of the Order of Alcántara since August 17, 1638, and
c) Antonio de Moscoso y Córdova, a native of Madrid and Knight of
the Order of Alcántara, which he entered in 1641.
3rd Bartolomés de Moscoso y Córdova, and
4th Juan de Moscoso y Córdova, Knight of the Order of Saint John
from Jerusalem, who died in captivity going to Malta.
VII. Luis de Moscoso y Córdova, native of Ecija, was the fifth lord
from the Towers of Alcorrin and married in Antequera to Lady
Catalina de Arrese y Narváez (daughter of Martín Pérez de Arrese, Lord
from the town of Cobels and from Doña Mariana de Narváez Rojas y Córdova,
both from Antequera). Their children were:
1st García de Moscoso and Arrese, died young.
2nd Martín de Moscoso y Arrese, who also died before his
father
3rd Juan de Moscoso y Arrese, who continues.
4th Cristóbal de Moscoso y Arrese, Franciscan religious, and
5th and 6th María and Catalina de Moscoso y Arrese, nuns in Santa
Isabel of Ecija.
VIII. Juan de Moscoso y Arrese, a native of Ecija, was the sixth Lord of
the Towers of Alcorrin and Knight of the Order of Santiago since the 18
February 1645. He married in Ecija with Doña Beatriz de Eslava and
Zayas, Lady of the mayorazgo of Eslava (only daughter of Pedro de
Eslava and of Mrs. Luisa de Eslava y Zayas). They were parents of
1.°Cristóbal de Moscoso y Eslava, who follows, and
2nd Andrés de Moscoso y Eslava, who died in the war.
IX. Cristóbal de Moscoso y Eslava was the seventh Lord and the first
Count of the Towers of Alcorrin, by the grace of King Don Carlos II in
1683. He was also Lord of the Albufera of Valencia and the first Marquis.
of Cullera, by the grace of King Philip V, in 1707. The same
Monarch, on December 9, 1728, granted him the title of Duke of
Algete, with greatness of first-class Spain. It played the
positions of His Majesty's Gentleman, Viceroy of Navarre, Captain General
of the Armies, General Commissioner of Infantry and Cavalry of
Spain, and the War Council. He married twice: the first time, with
Ms. Juana Galindo de Guzmán (daughter of Baltasar Fernández Galindo and
of Doña María Francisca de Cárdenas y Heredia, Countess of Casa-
Galindo), and the second, with Mrs. María de Pedrosa Dávila and
Bracamonte, widow Marquise of Navamorcuende and sister of
First Marquis of Fuente el Sol. He died in Madrid on January 27th
From the first marriage, there were children:
1st Juan de Moscoso y Galindo, died in a military expedition
made to the Delfinado of France.
2nd Baltasar Victorino de Moscoso y Galindo, Knight of the Order
of Santiago and Lieutenant General of the Royal Armies, who married with
Lady Margarita Dávila Coello y Vergara, Marchioness of
Navamorcuende. Without succession, and
3rd María de Moscoso y Galindo, married in 1707, to her cousin
second, Alonso de Zayas Guzmán and Hinestrosa, from the House of the
Marquesses of Talará, Counts of Fuentes. They had this son:
a) Alonso de Zayas y Moscoso, who will succeed.
From the second link to the first Duke of Algete with Mrs. María
Pedrosa Dávila and Bracamonte, was born
4th Juan Francisco de Moscoso Pedrosa, immediate successor in the
Houses of the Vega de Santa María and Fuente el Sol.
He came to succeed the first Duke of Algete, his grandson.
X. Alonso de Zayas y Moscoso, who was the second Count of the
Torres de Alcorrin, second Marquis of Cullera and second Duke of
Algete. He married in 1743 with Doña Catalina Manuel de Lando (daughter of the
Counts of la Corzana, of Santa Cruz de los Manueles and of the Saint
Roman Empire, Princes of Squilache). It was his son
XI. Cristóbal de Zayas and Manuel de Lando, third Duke of Algete,
Marquis of Cullera and Count of the Towers of Alcorrín. He married
marriage with Doña María de la Portería Benavides, and she was his only
daughter
XII. María de las Mercedes Zayas y Benavides, fourth Duchess of
Algete, Marchioness of Cullera, Countess of the Towers of Alcorrin, of the
Corzana and Santa Cruz de los Manueles. Celebrated their union with
Manuel Pérez Osorio and Spínola de la Cueva, Marquis of Alcañices,
in whose house the titles are kept.
WEAPONS
In the Chronicle of King Don Alonso VII, folio 269, when addressing the
lineage of Moscoso, it indicates the arms that have come later
using all individuals from the different branches spread across
Spain. Those weapons are: Silver, with a wolf's head of
sable, gules lampasado and decollated. (Shield 793.)
Later, when the line of men entered the House of Moscoso
from the Osorio, increased the previous weapons with those of Osorio from
this way: Shield divided: 1st, of gold, with two wolves in gules,
andantés and placed one on top of the other, which belongs to Osorio, and 2nd, the arms
previous ones, by Moscoso. (Shield 794.)
The Counts of Altamira have displayed: Shield divided in fess: 1st,
the arms of Osorio; 2nd, silver, with three wavy bars of azure, and
3rd, the arms of Moscoso. General border, in silver, with five
escutcheons, tablecloths as follows: 1st and 2nd, in red, with a silver castle,
and the 3rd, the gold tablecloth, with a rampant lion of gules.
Baños de Velasco and the 'Anonymous Nobility' say that some
Moscoso put three wolf heads in place of one and that the
heads were purple, on a field of silver.
Others used: Made of silver, with five wolf heads placed on
sotuer.
Vilar and Pascual give these other weapons as belonging to the Moscoso.
from Ecija: Party shield: 1st, of gold, with six bands of gules, and 2nd,
of gold, also, with a head of a bear (it must be of a wolf) in black,
a red banner dripping with blood.
