IMPORTANT
Observe all warnings in the text or on equipment labels regarding high-voltage or high-temperature conditions.
The following warnings and figures apply to most Fujitsu products.

Plug-In Unit Cautions

Observe the following precautions when handling plug-in units:

Hold the plug-in unit only by its edges.

Slowly and firmly push a plug-in unit into its slot to avoid damaging the unit. Do not force the unit. A
slow insertion method minimizes power surges during installation. The longer ground connector pins
ensure the ground circuit is connected first.

ESD Cautions

Units are stamped with anti-electrostatic markings (shown at

right). Observe the following precautions to avoid damage from ATTENTION
electrostatic discharge (ESD):
OBSERVE PRECAUTIONS

Always transport and store the unit in an ESD approved FOR HANDLING
shipping bag. ELECTROSTATIC

Always wear an ESD wrist strap, with a minimum 1-megohm SENSITIVE

Precautionary Measures
Precautions

1.1 Precautions
Observe the following precautions when handling fiber cabling.

DANGER:
The lightwave transmission equipment contains high-power optical laser devices that
transmit invisible light at a dangerous level. Follow local safety precautions regarding
fiber-optic cables. Never look into the end of a fiber-optic cable. Permanent eye damage or
blindness could occur.

DANGER:
Never handle exposed fiber with bare hands or touch it to your body. Follow local safety
precautions regarding fiber. A fiber fragment could enter the skin and be very difficult to
detect and remove.

1.2 Storage
Observe the following precautions when storing fiber cables.

WARNING:
Do not expose the fiber-optic cables to direct sunlight. The recommended storage
temperature is –10 to +60 C (14 to 140 F) and the maximum recommended relative

CHAPTER 2
Cleaning Fibers
Overview

WARNING:
All optical fibers are shipped with covers installed. The amount of cleaning can be
minimized if covers are always used when fibers are not connected and if protective covers
are always stored in a clean container.

■ Improper cleaning can contaminate a connector.

• Common contaminants in dust are microscopic particles of carbon and silicon.

These particles are very hard and can scratch the surface of the optical fiber.

• A fiber contaminated with microscopic carbon or silicon particles can damage

multiple connectors by scratching the fiber in each connector to which it is
connected. The involved modules would have to be returned for repair
(replacement of the optical pigtail).

Cleaning optical connectors with alcohol should be attempted only as a last resort
and after the ribbon cleaner has been found to be nonproductive.

• When alcohol is used, use only alcohol with a purity of more than 99 percent.
Many commercial alcohols are mixtures of less than 99 percent purity and may
seriously contaminate fiber surfaces.

• Do not leave containers of alcohol open, because they quickly absorb water
vapor from the air.

• If you use alcohol with a purity of less than 99 percent, a thin film of water may
be left on the fiber surface. This can cause the connector to have high loss and
introduce unacceptable dispersion.

Use only lint-free swabs, tissues, or ribbon cleaner specially designed for cleaning
optical connectors. Never use ordinary cotton swabs or tissues. Lint from these items
will contaminate the connector.

CHAPTER 4
Cable Connections
Overview

4.1 Overview
This chapter discusses the precautions necessary to preserve the integrity of optical connectors
and cables during connection and disconnection. Separate procedures are provided for the
following connector types:
■ FC and ST

SC, MU, LC, and MPO

DANGER:
The lightwave transmission equipment contains high-power optical laser devices that
transmit invisible light at a dangerous level. Follow local safety precautions regarding
fiber-optic cables. Never look into the end of a fiber-optic cable. Permanent eye damage or
blindness could occur.

DANGER:
Never handle exposed fiber with bare hands or touch it to your body. Follow local safety
precautions regarding fiber. A fiber fragment could enter the skin and be very difficult to
detect and remove.

WARNING:
Protective caps are provided with the optical connectors of the fiber-optic cable. (See
Figure 1-1 [p. 1-3].) When fiber-optic cables are not used for a long period, put the
protective caps on the optical connectors and seal the fiber-optic cables in a vinyl bag.

When a fiber-optic cable is disconnected, install a protective cap on both the cable
connector and the equipment connector (unless the connector will be reconnected in a
following step).

WARNING:
All optical connectors are shipped with covers installed. The amount of cleaning can be
minimized if covers are always used when fibers are not connected and if protective covers
are always stored in a clean container.
