This chapter lists precautionary measures that must be followed when dealing with optical
fibers and optical components. It includes the following sections: no i t c e S
1.1 Precautions
Observe the following precautions when handling fiber cabling.
DANGER:
The lightwave transmission equipment contains high-power optical laser devices that
transmit invisible light at a dangerous level. Follow local safety precautions regarding
fiber-optic cables. Never look into the end of a fiber-optic cable. Permanent eye damage or
blindness could occur.
DANGER:
Never handle exposed fiber with bare hands or touch it to your body. Follow local safety
precautions regarding fiber. A fiber fragment could enter the skin and be very difficult to
detect and remove.
1.2 Storage
Observe the following precautions when storing fiber cables.
WARNING:
Do not expose the fiber-optic cables to direct sunlight. The recommended storage
temperature is –10 to +60 C (14 to 140 F) and the maximum recommended relative
humidity is 90 percent.
WARNING:
All optical connectors are shipped with covers installed. The amount of cleaning can be
minimized if covers are always used when fibers are not connected and if protective covers
are always stored in a clean container.
WARNING:
Protective caps are provided with the optical connectors of the fiber-optic cable. (See
Figure 1-1 [p. 1-3].) When fiber-optic cables are not used for a long period, put the
protective caps on the optical connectors and seal the fiber-optic cables in a vinyl bag.
When a fiber-optic cable is disconnected, install a protective cap on both the cable
connector and the equipment connector unless the connector will be reconnected in the
next step.

2 CLEANING FIBERS
This chapter includes the following sections: no i t c e S
2.1 Overview
This procedure requires the following tools for cleaning fiber-optic cables with ribbon cleaner:
■ Lint-free swabs or tissues and ribbon cleaner (designed for cleaning optical connectors)
■
Fiber scope
■ Alcohol more than 99% pure
DANGER:
The lightwave transmission equipment contains high-power optical laser devices that
transmit invisible light at a dangerous level. Follow local safety precautions regarding
fiber-optic cables. Never look into the end of a fiber-optic cable. Permanent eye damage or
blindness could occur.
DANGER:
Never handle exposed fiber with bare hands or touch it to your body. Follow local safety
precautions regarding fiber. A fiber fragment could enter the skin and be very difficult to
detect and remove.
WARNING:
All optical fibers are shipped with covers installed. The amount of cleaning can be
minimized if covers are always used when fibers are not connected and if protective covers
are always stored in a clean container.
■
Cleaning optical connectors with alcohol should be attempted only as a last resort
and after the ribbon cleaner has been found to be nonproductive.
• When alcohol is used, use only alcohol with a purity of more than 99 percent.
Many commercial alcohols are mixtures of less than 99 percent purity and may
seriously contaminate fiber surfaces.
• Do not leave containers of alcohol open, because they quickly absorb water
vapor from the air.
• If you use alcohol with a purity of less than 99 percent, a thin film of water may
be left on the fiber surface. This can cause the connector to have high loss and
introduce unacceptable dispersion.
■
Use only lint-free swabs, tissues, or ribbon cleaner specially designed for cleaning
optical connectors. Never use ordinary cotton swabs or tissues. Lint from these items
will contaminate the connector.
Step Task
1 Read general notes for fiber-optic cable handling (Refer to Chapter 1).
3 If dirt is present, clean the fiber using the directions supplied with the ribbon cleaner.
Note: For MPO connectors, note the angle of the fiber surface area and tilt the connector so the fiber
surface area is flat on the ribbon surface.
6 If the fiber is still dirty after it has been cleaned three or four times, proceed to Step 7 [p. 2-4].
If the fiber is clean, go to Step 12 [p. 2-4].
7 Wipe the fiber with a lint-free swab/tissue soaked in 99-percent pure alcohol.
9 Clean the fiber using a dry, lint-free swab/tissue or ribbon cleaner. Repeat three or four times
to remove all alcohol residue.
10 Recheck the fiber with the fiber scope for dirt and alcohol residue.
11 If it is still dirty, repeat Step 7 [p. 2-4] through 10 [p. 2-4]. Otherwise, continue with Step 12
[p. 2-4].
12 Plug the fiber into the port/bulkhead connector and remove it (refer to Chapter 1,
Precautionary Measures).
15 If the fiber is still dirty, the connector is dirty. Clean it using the correct procedure in
Chapter 3, Cleaning Fiber Optic Connectors on a Plug-In Unit and then repeat the
fiber-cleaning procedure.
16 Plug the fiber into the port/bulkhead connector. (Refer to Section 4.3, Handling FC and ST
Connectors [p. 4-3].)
3.1 Overview
This procedure requires the following tools for cleaning fiber-optic cables and connectors with
ribbon cleaner:
■
Lint-free swabs 2.5 mm in diameter (for SC and FC connectors)
■ Lint-free swabs 1.25 mm in diameter (for LC and MU connectors)
■
MPO reel cleaner (for MPO connector)
■ Alcohol more than 99% pure
■
LC shutter-opening tool (part number TA98901-0123)
■ Fiber scope
DANGER:
Do not disassemble a plug-in unit for cleaning.
DANGER:
The lightwave transmission equipment contains high-power optical laser devices that
transmit invisible light at a dangerous level. Follow local safety precautions regarding
fiber-optic cables. Never look into the end of a fiber-optic cable. Permanent eye damage or
blindness could occur.
DANGER:
Never handle exposed fiber with bare hands or touch it to your body. Follow local safety
precautions regarding fiber. A fiber fragment could enter the skin and be very difficult to
detect and remove.
WARNING:
All optical connectors are shipped with covers installed. The amount of cleaning can be
minimized if covers are always used when fibers are not connected and if protective covers
are always stored in a clean container.
■ Cleaning optical connectors with alcohol should be attempted only as a last resort
and after the ribbon cleaner has been found to be nonproductive.
■ Use only lint-free swabs, tissues, or ribbon cleaner specially designed for cleaning
optical connectors. Never use ordinary cotton swabs or tissues. Lint from these items
will contaminate the connector. Do not touch the cleaning end of a swab. Always
discard a swab after each use.
WARNING:
Perform this procedure with the unit dismounted from the slot and disconnected from the
power.
Step Task
1 Dismount the unit from the slot.
2 Take a lint-free swab (2.5-mm diameter for SC and FC connectors, 1.25-mm diameter for LC
and MU connectors).
3 Insert the swab into the connector and rotate it seven times in the same direction
5 Check the fiber behind the connector with the fiber scope for dirt.
6 If the fiber is clean, proceed to Step 13 [p. 3-4]. If it is still dirty, repeat Step 1 [p. 3-4]
through Step 3 [p. 3-4]. If dirt is not removed, clean the connector with alcohol, as follows:
7 Immerse the top of the head of the lint-free swab in a small amount of alcohol. Shake the
swab ten times to remove excess alcohol.
8 Insert the swab in the connector and rotate it seven times in the same direction.
10 Insert a second dry swab in the connector and rotate it seven times in the same direction.
12 Check the fiber behind the connector with the fiber scope for dirt. If the connector is clean,
proceed to the next step. If it is dirty, repeat Step 7 [p. 3-4] through Step 11 [p. 3-4].
WARNING:
Perform this procedure with the unit dismounted from the slot and disconnected from the
power.
Step Task
1 Dismount the unit from the slot.
3 To keep the shutter open insert the LC shutter-opening tool into the connector (Figure 3-3
[p. 3-6]).
5 Insert the swab through the LC shutter-opening tool into the connector and rotate it seven
times in the same direction.
7 Check the fiber behind the connector with the fiber scope for dirt.
8 If the fiber is clean, remove the shutter-opening tool and proceed to Step 17 [p. 3-7].
9 If it is still dirty, repeat Step 2 [p. 3-5] through Step 7 [p. 3-6]. If dirt is not removed, clean
the connector with alcohol, as follows:
10 Immerse the top of the head of a lint-free swab in a small amount of alcohol. Shake the swab
ten times to remove excess alcohol.
11 With the LC shutter-opening tool holding the connector open, insert the swab and rotate it
seven times in the same direction.
13 Insert a second, dry swab in the connector and rotate it seven times in the same direction.
15 Check the fiber behind the connector with the fiber scope for dirt. If it is still dirty, repeat
Step 10 [p. 3-6] through Step 14 [p. 3-7].
WARNING:
Perform this procedure with the unit dismounted from the slot and disconnected from the
power.
Step Task
1 Dismount the unit from the slot.
2 Press the tip of an MPO cleaner (Figure 3-4 [p. 3-8]) straight into the MPO connector.
