CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
Financial problems are one of the most common struggles experienced by many senior high
school students in the Philippines today. At Piat National High School , a number of students
come from families with limited income, making it difficult for them to provide for school related
expenses such as projects, transportation, uniforms, and daily allowances. These financial
challenges may result in students feeling stressed, less motivated, and unable to focus properly
on their studies. In some cases, students are even forced to miss classes or skip school activities
due to lack of money.
Academic Performance is often affected when students are distracted by financial
concerns, studies have shown that students who experience financial problems tend to have
lower grades, poor class participation, and a higher risk of dropping out.At the senior high school
level where requirements and academic expectations are more demanding, these problems can
have a deeper impact. Financial struggles may not only hinder a student's academic
performance but also affect their confidence and opportunities for further education or career
plans.
Aytac S. et.al(2018),stated that globally, being financially stable became a serious matter
when it comes to productivity and creativity in the academic performance of students.Indeed,we
researchers also believe that being financially stable means students could afford their daily
academic expenses in their everyday life as they productively enhance themselves in
school.Financial instability on the other hand, can cause negative effects to the academic
performance of students, such as they could not afford a particular project, neither to participate
financially in a specific project,as they cannot afford to buy things that is essential to their
academic development,it may result for the decrease of their academic performance in school.
According to Dang and Bulus(2015),stated that many students are affected by the
economic downfall.Even college students often worry about their finances, which then this
financially worry may affect their academic performance as the students are dividing their
attention between financial and academic.Hence, this can be stated that the family’s finances are
motivation and encouragement for the students to have a good academic performance.
From the study of Alegre et.al(2020), that currently some students are struggling with
school expenses, and another problem for students is lack of school equipment, and added to
more years for senior high school, and those students who want to work students, but underage
can’t work because they are not in the right age to work, and their parents can’t afford to educate
their child due to a disability on financial support. If other students lack the financial support, they
will be less educated.Nowadays,it is difficult to make money for school supplies and food
supplies.
A study in the Philippines by Moore et.al(2021),stated that financial stress impedes their
ability to succeed academically and students experiencing financial stress find it challenging to
navigate relationships with wealthier peers, often leading to feelings of isolation and
embarrassment.
The goal of this research is to understand how financial problems affect the school
performance of senior high school students at Piat National High School. This study is new
because because it focused on the real-life struggles of students in the specific school and
shows how money problems can make it harder for them to study well, complete school tasks,or
attend classes.By knowing this, the school, teachers, and parents can find better ways to help
students who are facing financial challenges.
