d) altitude- the height above sea level

ANSWER IN FEW WORDS

Q1. Differentiate between climate and weather.
Ans:
Weather Climate
i) Weather refers to the atmospheric i) Climate of a region is the atmospheric
conditions at a place for a short period. condition experienced over a long period.
ii) Weather is temporary and changes often. ii) Climate remains stable over a long period.
iii) Weather prevails over a small area like a iii) Climate prevails over a large area like a
city. country.

Q2. Name three factors affecting the climate of a place.

Ans: The factors affecting the climate of a place are:
i. Temperature and latitude
ii. Prevailing winds
iii. Altitude

Q3. Name the heat zones of the world.

Ans: The heat zones of the world are:
i. Torrid Zone
ii. Temperate Zone
iii. Frigid Zone
ANSWER IN DETAIL
Q1. Why does temperature decrease as height increases?
Ans: i) Air, while rising from the sea level, becomes lighter and thinner.
ii) This causes air to loose its heat carrying capacity.
iii) That is why, as height increases, temperature falls.

Q2. What does the latitudes of a place tell you about the climate of that
place?
Ans: i) The lower latitudes receive more heat than the higher latitudes.
ii) Equatorial regions experience extreme climate as they receive direct rays of the sun.
iii) When we move away from the equator, the climate becomes moderate.
iv) It is cold at the poles, because places located in this belt receive oblique rays.

Q3. How does distance from the sea, affect the climate of a place?
Ans: i) The closer a place is to the sea, the cooler and more humid it is.
ii) Distance of the place from the sea and the direction of winds affect the humidity of a place.
iii) Coastal areas are more humid than areas which are far from the sea.
iv) Moisture causes humidity and makes a place cooler.
v) Humidity affects the climate of a place and it causes rainfall.

GIVE REASON
a) Statement: Temperature is one of the prime determinants of climate.
Reason: Temperature depends on the heat received by the sun. The more exposed an
area is to the rays of the sun, the higher is its temperature.

b) Statement: The temperature prevalent in a place governs the flow of winds.

Reason: Winds blow from a cold place to a hot one.

ASSERTION-REASON
a) Assertion (A): Weather and climate are closely related.
Reason (R): Weather is a part of climate.

Ans: Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

b) Assertion (A): There are different factors that affect the climate of a place.
Reason (R): The Earth has five heat zones.

Ans: A is true but R is false.
