Cloud Computing Adoption Case Study: Polygon (Matic Network)
1. Introduction
Polygon (formerly Matic Network) was founded in 2017 by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, and
Anurag Arjun as a Layer-2 Ethereum scaling platform. Headquartered in India, Polygon aims to
address Ethereum’s scalability and high gas fee issues by providing faster and cheaper
transactions while maintaining security through its robust Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus
mechanism. Over the years, Polygon has grown into a comprehensive platform supporting
thousands of decentralized applications (dApps), including DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces,
gaming projects, and enterprise blockchain solutions. It also offers a suite of tools and solutions
such as Polygon SDK, Polygon PoS Chain, and Polygon zkEVM to enable developers to build
and deploy scalable blockchain applications efficiently.
Current IT Challenges:
● High transaction demand from dApps and enterprises requires scalable node
infrastructure.
● Heavy reliance on Ethereum Layer-1 increases costs and latency.
● Limited traditional infrastructure for global distribution and analytics.
● Need for developer-friendly environments for smart contract and zkEVM solutions.
● Growing ecosystem (over 37,000 dApps) requires reliable APIs, databases, and
monitoring.
Objectives for Cloud Adoption:
● Ensure high availability and scalability of validator nodes.
● Provide enterprise-grade developer tools (APIs, analytics, SDKs).
● Reduce node management overhead for dApp developers.
● Implement cost-efficient storage and data analytics.
● Improve disaster recovery, security, and regulatory compliance.
2. Cloud Service Requirements
2.1 Software as a Service (SaaS) Needs
Developer Collaboration Tools:
● Requirement: Code repositories, CI/CD pipelines, and communication tools.
● Justification: SaaS tools like GitHub Enterprise, Slack, and Google Workspace reduce
overhead and accelerate collaboration.
Analytics Platforms:
● Requirement: On-demand blockchain data queries and dashboards.
● Justification: Polygon blockchain data can be ingested into BigQuery via custom ETL
pipelines from public Polygon nodes or third-party APIs, enabling developers and
researchers to analyze blockchain data without managing large databases
Examples: Google Workspace, GitHub Enterprise, Google BigQuery.
2.2 Platform as a Service (PaaS) Needs
Blockchain Node Hosting Platform:
● Requirement: Managed node hosting for Polygon PoS, Supernets, and zkEVM.
● Justification: Google Cloud’s Blockchain Node Engine simplifies node setup, scaling,
and upgrades.
API Management Platform:
● Requirement: Secure and scalable APIs for dApps and third-party integrations.
● Justification: PaaS tools provide traffic routing, load balancing, and API monitoring.
Examples: Google Cloud Endpoints, AWS API Gateway, Azure API Management.
2.3 Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) Needs
High-Performance Compute Instances:
● Requirement: Elastic compute for validator nodes and zk-rollup transaction validation.
● Justification: IaaS allows rapid scale-up during NFT drops or gaming traffic spikes.
● Examples: AWS EC2, Azure VMs, Google Compute Engine.
Secure Storage & Databases:
● Requirement: Encrypted storage for snapshots, transaction archives, and user data.
● Justification: Cloud-native IaaS databases ensure backup, recovery, and high durability.
● Examples: AWS RDS, Azure SQL, Google Cloud SQL.
3. Service Provider Analysis
3.1 Provider Comparison
3.2 Detailed Cost Analysis (Google Cloud Selected)
Monthly Cost Breakdown (Estimated for Polygon scale):
● Compute Engine (Validator Nodes – 4 instances): ₹20,000
● Cloud SQL Database: ₹8,000
● Blockchain Node Engine: ₹10,000
● BigQuery (1 TB free + additional queries): ₹2,000
● Storage (1 TB snapshot + backup): ₹3,000
● Networking & Security Services: ₹4,000
Total Monthly Cost: ~₹47,000
Annual Cost: ~₹5,64,000
Traditional Infrastructure Comparison:
● On-premises servers: Initial ₹12,00,000 + ₹3,00,000/year maintenance
● Cloud adoption: ₹5,64,000/year
● Savings: ~₹6,36,000 in the first year.
3.3 Service Selection Justification
Google Cloud Platform Selected because:
1. Direct strategic partnership with Polygon Labs (2023).
2. Blockchain Node Engine reduces node management complexity.
3. BigQuery integration provides easy blockchain analytics.
4. Competitive pricing for developer-focused workloads.
Strong compliance and global availability for enterprise adoption.
4. Deployment Model
Chosen Model: Hybrid Cloud
Justification:
1. Security – Core validator nodes and sensitive blockchain data stored in private cloud or
decentralised cloud (Akash Network).
2. Scalability – Public cloud (Google Cloud) for dApp APIs, analytics, and developer tools.
3. Cost Optimization – On-demand scalability prevents over-provisioning.
4. Resilience – Multi-cloud approach (Google Cloud + decentralized cloud providers like
Akash, Fleek) reduces vendor lock-in.
Architecture:
● Private Component: Validator nodes, internal analytics.
● Public Component: API endpoints, BigQuery datasets, developer SDKs.
● Integration: VPN/secure gateways between private validators and public APIs.
5. Implementation Benefits
5.1 Immediate Benefits
● Performance: Faster block validation and dApp API response times.
● Uptime: 99.9% SLA from Google Cloud.
● Security: Encrypted storage, automated backups, and compliance certifications.
● Developer Experience: Managed services reduce operational burden.
5.2 Scaling Scenarios
● Scenario 1: NFT Gaming Surge
○ Auto-scale nodes during high transaction volumes (200% capacity increase).
● Scenario 2: dApp Ecosystem Growth
○ 10x more dApps onboarded without manual infra setup.
● Scenario 3: zkEVM Adoption
○ Launch new zk-rollup solutions using cloud-native compute.
5.3 Technology Advantages
● BigQuery + custom Polygon data pipelines: Blockchain analytics for developers,
enterprises, and researchers using data ingested from public Polygon nodes or
third-party APIs
● Node Engine: Simplified validator management.
● Hybrid Integration: Flexibility of public cloud with private security.
6. Conclusion
Summary of Recommendations:
● Adopt Google Cloud as primary service provider with hybrid model.
● Use Blockchain Node Engine + BigQuery for developer support and analytics.
● Leverage decentralized cloud (Akash, Fleek) for resilience.
Expected Key Benefits:
● 50–60% reduction in infrastructure costs.
● 5x faster deployment of new dApps and features.
● Seamless scaling during transaction spikes.
● Enterprise-grade compliance and security.
Return on Investment (ROI):
● Break-even in ~9 months.
● Long-term savings of ₹6,00,000+ annually.
● Stronger developer adoption and ecosystem growth.
