BSc Computing (Top-up)
Overview
M
odern society relies heavily on computers, to automate processes and to perform repetitive
tasks in reliable and repeatable ways. As a result the modern workplace increasingly
incorporates computational technology and requires employees to have good, or better,
computing skills. Computing degrees give the student the skills that they need to practically apply
computing technology in a wide range of contexts. More generally, a computing degree enables the
graduate to solve problems using computers. This computing degree combines key systems analysis
and design skills from software engineering with applied programming skills which are contextualised
by important applied topics like Artificial Intelligence or the technologies of the Web.
This computing course enables you to ‘top-up’ your existing qualifications to the internationally
recognised ‘bachelors degree’ classification if you have an Associate Degree or an undergraduate
level certificate, diploma or equivalent, in computing or a closely related field. You will gain
understanding of computing tools, techniques and practises across a range of application areas. The
course will allow you to develop a critical understanding of the analysis, design, development, testing,
and evaluation of computing systems. In the modern world, regardless of the career path that you
take, some aspect of computing is increasingly likely to play a role in your work. A degree in this area
gives you a foundation for exploiting this trend.

Student Support
When starting at the University you will be provided with a comprehensive introduction to the University
and your programme online. Throughout your first week you should complete our Global Online Induction
module, which explains the resources that will be available to you and how to access them. Should you require
additional personal or learning support at any point during your studies we will explain how this can be
provided.
You will also be provided with a dedicated programme handbook which contains all the information you need
to know about your programme and studying at the University more generally. You will also be given a student
email account and provided with access to our student-focussed online information service myNapier. We will
also introduce you to our virtual learning environment, known as Moodle, which enables you to engage and
interact with a variety of learning support materials specific to your programme and the modules you will be
studying. In addition to receiving support from the programme teaching team you will have a Programme
Leader who will act as a Personal Development Tutor (PDT) and will meet with you online throughout your
programme to ensure that your individual learning needs and aspirations are being met.
In addition to this, you will receive online support in the form of:
• Dedicated online administrators who will keep track of your progress and will help you if you are having
any problems.
• Programme management team and module tutors who can be contacted either online or email to discuss
and address issues.
• A regular ‘virtual office hour’ where academic staff will be available on a weekly basisfor one to one contact
with you.
• A dedicated interactive database of frequently asked questions specific to the online learning environment
(Ask Ben).
