Hungarian National Rules

By the end of 1942 the Hungarian 2nd Army was under intense pressure by the advancing Red
Army. However, the troops of the Hungarian Army remained resolute in facing the tide of advancing
Communists fighting to the best of their ability to weather the storm approaching them. The following
rules reflect this determination in the face of an ever-swelling Red Tide.

Huszar!
The Hungarian Army has maintained its legacy of
superior horsemanship, and today its troops are
taught to reposition as quickly as possible.
Hungarian Units with this special rule reduce the
roll to successfully pass a Follow Me! Movement
order by 1.

Preparing for the Storm

The Hungarian Army knew it had bitten off more
than it could chew beginning in the fall of 1942,
orders were given to buckle down and attempt to
hold ground for as long as they could.
Hungarian Units with this special rule reduce the
roll to successfully pass a Dig In! Movement
order by 1.

Magyar Steel
The Hungarian Tank divisions were often created by
reassigning personnel from Cavalry Units. Those
men kept a host of submachine guns, grenades, and a
willingness to dismount to assault with the infantry
they were supporting.
Hungarian Units with this special rule reduce the
roll to successfully pass an Assault Roll by 1.

Hungary at War
By 1942 the Hungarian Army realized their
position on the Don was untenable. The early
successes of the Honved against the Soviet
Union and Yugoslavia felt like a distant dream
compared to the current problems belaboring
the Hungarian 2nd Army. By 1942 the
Hungarian army, as part of the advances of
Germany’s army group south, had been in a
holding pattern to defend against Soviet
Counter attacks. In this role the Hungarian 2nd
Army had proven effective in sustaining itself
against the probing attacks from the Red Army
and maintained, and in some areas gained slight amounts of territory. The 2nd Army played a critical role in
protecting the Northern flank of the 6th German army attacking Stalingrad. Following the stalling out of the German
attack into the city the days of the Hungarian Army in its current position on the Don were numbered.
The attempts to relieve pressure on the German 6th army at Stalingrad in operation Winter Storm
precipitated the Soviet Counterattack Operation Little Saturn. This operation saw the full force of Soviet Forces in
attacks of modern Soviet equipment into Hungarian-held sections of the river in the attempt to prevent the relief of
German forces embroiled in city fighting. The already under-equipped Hungarian forces were greatly outmatched
by the large amounts of T-34s and KV tanks assaulting their positions. Moreover, German preoccupation with their
own disasters along the Don river prevented a great deal of support from being funneled to Hungarian troops,
thereby leaving the Hungarian 2nd Army essentially on its own. Just as German supply lines to front line troops in
Russia collapsed following the German defeat at Stalingrad, so to did Hungarian supply lines collapse leaving
Hungarian troops with little means to sustain their war-fighting effectiveness.
By the end of the winter of 1943 the Hungarian 2nd Army was on its last legs and in retreat from the front
lines. Casualty totals reached near 80% for most of the 2nd army, with most of the Hungarian equipment either
destroyed or abandoned on the front to the advancing waves of Red Army forces.

Hungarian Equipment

Much like its contemporary belligerents and foes, Hungary entered the 2nd World War vastly
undermanned and under equipped for the orders assigned to it. Upon the embarking into combat as part of
Operation Barbarossa in 1941, Hungary possessed three army groups with two being held in Hungarian
territory and the 2nd Army being sent in support of German action against the Soviet Union, achieving great
initial success in the face of undertrained, poorly led, and under equipped Red Army forces. The 2nd Army
was sent into the Soviet Union with all of the modern equipment the Hungarian Army had at its disposal,
including the newly formed Hungarian Motorized Units, anti-tank guns, and Toldi Tanks. However, as the war
in Russia stretched on it was clear new, better equipment would be needed for the Hungarian forces to remain
an effective fighting force against the Red Army, prompting the procurement of Nimrod Anti-Aircraft
vehicles, new anti-tank guns, and the purchasing of a host of German equipment to equip Honved forces in
Russia like Panzer 38Gs, Panzer IIIs, and Panzer IVs. Following its collapse during the fighting in the early
months of 1943, the 2nd Army would eventually be reconstituted in Hungary and Hungarian forces fighting
Soviet advances would be reinforced with new equipment like the brand new Turan tanks and German Marder
Tank Destroyers. Yet, such equipment would come far too late to improve the chances of stemming the
advance of the Red Army or preventing the desperate defense of the Hungarian army in Russia from
collapsing back to the Carpathians.

Which Panzer?
Sources differ on the type of Panzer III purchased by the Hungarian
Army to replace losses of T-38 vehicles. Some sources insist every
replacement vehicle was a Panzer III N, Panzer III M, or a mixture
of the two. Given this variation in responses from sourcing, the de-
sign team found it important to include both options for the usage of
Hungarian players, with of course a slight bump in points for the
more effective Panzer III N’s 7.5cm Gun.

An Outdated Wildcard
Initially entering production in 1942, the Turan was held back from front-line duty due to
fears of being double crossed by Hungary’s long standing rival Romania, rising animosity with
Germany, and severely delayed production due to inadequate armament. These delays caused
Hungarian units to finally receive the Turan in August of 1943. There is some debate about when
the Turan first saw combat on the Eastern Front as some surviving Hungarian reports indicate the
Turan-equipped Units entered combat in late 1943 instead of the more commonly acknowledged
operational usage in western Ukraine in 1944.

To this end, the Turan Harckocsizo Szazad fills the Wildcard slot, only suitable for use
with your opponent’s permission to fight battles to determine if the Turan could have made a
difference for Hungary’s desperate defense on the eastern front in 1943.

“By the end of 1942 Hungary was dealt a series of sobering blows by the Red Army, and
had nearly lost the entirety of the Hungarian 2nd Army by March of 1943. In short, the
Hungarian Army was in a bad way following the conclusion of the Battle of Stalingrad.
But with their history of continual losing ground and outdated equipment the moment it
entered service, what’s not to love about the Hungarian army? Desperate Defense includes
a variety of formations worthy of attention, with the T-38 (Pz38G to German players eve-
rywhere), Panzer IV, Turan, and Motorized Infantry making an appearance to attempt to
stem the Soviet Tide. Each formation and unit has been meticulously looked over to ensure
maximum crunchiness for historical flavor and only limited changes to playability. As a
player who is proud to say he loves his Hungarians it really was a labor of love to make
sure they were both fun to play and fair to play against.”
