In Japanese, the typical sentence structure is:
Subject + Object + Verb
This means the verb usually comes at the end of the
sentence.

In polite form, to make a negative sentence, you usually
change the verb ending to ~ません.

たべます (tabemasu) → たべません (tabemasen)


= I eat → I don’t eat
いきます (ikimasu) → いきません (ikimasen)
= I go → I don’t go
のみます (nomimasu) → のみません (nomimasen)
= I drink → I don’t drink

QUICK TIP
Use ~ません for polite negatives.
Just replace ~ます with ~ません to make it negative.
→ Example: のみます → のみません (drink → don’t drink)
Don’t forget verb type matters in plain form.
Different rules apply depending on whether the verb is う, る,
or irregular when forming negative casually.
い-adjectives change to ~くない to be negative.
→ たかい (expensive) → たかくない (not expensive)
