‘This book comes at an important time for the corporate world. Having
graduated with a Harvard MBA and with seven years of consulting experi-
ence, I was well prepared for the strategic content of my role and my mis-
sion to develop a turnaround strategy for the company. However, this
training did not prepare me for navigating the corporate culture and psych-
ology. I was offered the support of having a corporate coach and John
O’Brien’s Jungian psychology background stood out for me. Since then,
John has been by my side, helping me develop, understand the landscape
and have an impact during each of my subsequent roles. He has taught me
how to apply corporate analytical psychology and to understand the uncon-
scious forces at play in the board room.
Business schools and consulting firms train people to only focus on results
and that can lead to blind spots. To be effective we also have to understand
the culture, the mindset of leaders and the psyche. There are organizational
scars from previous failures.
This book, grounded in Jungian psychology, provides a comprehensive
user guide for navigating corporate systems and understanding what drives
people to take certain actions.’

This book comes at an important time for the corporate world, as it starts to
embrace diversity in senior leadership. Whilst every region is at a different
stage of embracing diversity, this change is disrupting the organizational
psyche and traditional model of leadership. I was appointed to be Chief
Strategy Officer of Deutsche Lufthansa, Europe’s largest airline, in 2011 at
the age of 32 and not yet speaking a word of German. As I looked around
at my first meeting of the top fifty leaders, I saw forty-five white German
men over the age of 50 and the meeting language was switched to English
for the first time so that I could participate. The corporate culture was very
German and very conservative and enabled people with similar backgrounds
to succeed. The new CEO also appointed five female leaders within a few
months to try to modernise the culture. This was in stark contrast to the
traditional corporate culture of promoting from within and we were seen as
outsiders.
Having graduated with a Harvard MBA and with seven years of consult-
ing experience, I was well prepared for the strategic content of my role and
my mission to develop a turnaround strategy for the company. However,
this training did not prepare me for navigating the corporate culture and
psychology.
I learned (the hard way) that the organizational psyche didn’t like surprises
or change. I learned that when a senior colleague was emotionally upset at
me for not being consulted, that responding with rational arguments would
be counterproductive. I learned how to apply Jungian type psychology to
understand the personalities of my senior stakeholders to interact in a way
which would resonate with them. I learned how common narcissists are in
senior leadership positions, what drives them and how to work with them.
Organizational politics are hard to understand as an outsider and it requires
