Section 1: "Overview"
=====================
The IBM Ethernet Quad PeerMaster adapters operate in either of two
modes: traditional adapter mode or VNET (Virtual Network) mode. In
traditional mode, the four ports of a PeerMaster adapter are treated
as separate adapters operating on separate subnets, with unique MAC
addresses. Cross-subnet traffic must be routed, either internally by
the server, or externally by a local router.
When a PeerMaster adapter operates in VNET mode, the multiple LAN
segments to which the ports are attached are treated as a single
subnet, called a VNET. To protocol stacks, such as TCP/IP and
NetBIOS, a VNET appears to be a single adapter. Multiple PeerMaster
adapters may be configured to interoperate in various ways: as one
large VNET (up to 24 segments when using 6 adapters); as multiple
independent VNETs; as traditional subnets; or in any combination of
VNETs and traditional subnets. Each port within a VNET is configured
with the same MAC address. Cross-segment traffic within a VNET is
switched by the adapter(s), shielding the server from the task of
handling and routing such traffic. External internetworking devices
are not required to provide communication between segments of a VNET.
The following guidelines apply to PeerMaster adapters in either
traditional or VNET mode:
* Do not externally join (using bridges, switches, or
concentrators) ports of adapters.
* You may configure as many nodes as necessary; the adapter places
no limit on the number of nodes per segment.
For additional information on VNET Switch Mode refer to the IBM
Ethernet Quad PeerMaster Installation Guide provided with your
adapters.

Section 7: "S/W Installation and Configuration Overview"
========================================================
You have already completed the hardware portion of the installation
process. This file contains the instructions to complete the
installation and configuration of the LAN software.
The following list provides the basic flow of the LAN software
installation process. The details required to perform each step are
provided in the following sections.
Note: Multiple ports of PeerMaster adapters may be bound to protocols
as a single virtual network, hereafter called 'VNET'. The driver that
creates these virtual networks is QUADENET.SYS.
The basic procedure is as follows:
a) Install and configure your NT Server as described by the
installation manuals provided with that product.
b) Review Section 8: "Precautions, Limitations and Guidelines" for
NT specific precautions.
c) Install and configure your Quad PeerMaster adapter(s) and
protocols using the NT Network Control Panel Applet (NCPA).
Section 9: "S/W Installation and Configuration", guides you
through this process.
====================================================
Section 8: "Precautions, Limitations and Guidelines"
====================================================
1. A single PeerMaster adapter may not be included into
multiple VNETs.
2. You may configure multiple adapters as a single VNET,
multiple VNETs, multiple traditional subnetworks, or as any
combination of traditional and virtual subnetworks.
3. A single PeerMaster adapter must be configured to operate
exclusively either as a VNET switch or a traditional
adapter. Both modes cannot be supported simultaneously.
4. Values placed into the Network Address edit box on the
Virtual Adapter Setup dialog box will override the factory
programmed network address for your adapters, and will be
applied to all ports within the VNET.
5. Initialization, configuration and re-configuration changes
do not take effect until the system is rebooted.
6. All PeerMaster adapters (MCA and PCI) are configured in the
same manner.
7. It is NOT necessary to set up the Flash Slot parameter using
PSSETUP on adapters being installed in NT servers. The PCI
device number assigned by PCI BIOS is used as the slot
number for each adapter. You may use PSSETUP to identify and
label each adapter with its PCI device number. Note that
the device number may change as PCI devices are added to, or
removed from, your system. PCI device numbers are also
subject to change should a different revision of BIOS be
installed on your system. Should this occur, you may use
PSSETUP to identify the PCI device numbers assigned to each
adapter, and re-label the adapters.
8. At least one, and no greater than eight, adapters must be
included into a VNET. At least one port must be activated on
each adapter included into a VNET.
===============================================
Section 9: "S/W Installation and Configuration"
===============================================
The program files for the PeerMaster Adapter are installed and
configured via the NT Network Control Panel Applet (NCPA). NCPA
automates the installation and configuration of LAN Adapters and
Protocols. NCPA copies installation files from the PeerMaster Option
Diskette and updates the NT registry with the selected configuration
options. The following steps describe installation and configuration
for both Traditional and VNET modes of operation using NCPA.
The following instructions assume:
* The PeerMaster Adapter has been installed.
* The required configuration information is known.
* The installer has a basic familiarity with MS Windows.
1. Select the MAIN window.
2. From the "Control Panel" window, select the "Network" option. The
NETWORK SETTINGS dialog box will appear presenting a number of
options.
3. From the NETWORK SETTINGS dialog box, select "Add Adapter" and
wait for the ADD NETWORK ADAPTER window to display.
4. In the ADD NETWORK ADAPTER window, use the mouse (or the DOWN
ARROW) with the NETWORK ADAPTER CARD option to scroll through a
list of available adapters. Select OTHER (at bottom of menu) and
then click on CONTINUE.
5. When prompted for the location of the installation software,
insert the PeerMaster Option Diskette into an available drive,
enter the appropriate drive letter and the path NT into the edit
box, for example:
A:\NT
Then click on OK and wait for the PeerMaster Adapter Setup dialog
box to display.
6. This step guides you through the process of installing a single
PeerMaster port as a traditional adapter. To configure multiple
ports as a virtual subnetwork, skip to step 7. After completion of
this step, you may return to step 3 of this section and configure
another port as a traditional adapter or skip to step 8 if no more
ports are to be installed.
You may press the HELP button at any time during this process to
display on-line information pertaining to the available options.
To display information within the HELP dialog box, click on the
desired field using your mouse or highlight the desired field
using the tab key then press <ENTER>.
a) The Socket Id field permits you to select a specific
PeerMaster port to install/configure in Traditional adapter
mode. Use the pull-down menu to display a list of all
available adapter/ports. A Socket Id is comprised of the
following three sub-fields:
Bus number:
For MCA and PCI systems, this identifies the system bus in
which the target adapter is installed. This field is
meaningful only in multi-bus servers. The bus type of the
target adapter (MCA or PCI) is displayed in the Socket Id
box.
Slot number:
For MCA systems, this is the number of the expansion slot
in which the target adapter is installed.
For PCI systems, this is the PCI device number assigned to
the adapter by PCI BIOS. You may use PSSETUP to identify
and label each installed adapter with the PCI device
number assigned to it.
Note: PCI device numbers are subject to change as
additional PCI devices are installed in your system, or if
the BIOS revision on your system is changed.
Port number:
For MCA and PCI systems, this is the target Ethernet port
number of the adapter being installed. Port one of the
adapter is the connector furthest from the gold fingers
that insert into the expansion slot on the system board of
your computer. Port four is the connector that is closest
to the expansion slot connector pins on the adapter.
b) You may override the factory set network address. Use the
edit box to enter a Locally Administered Network Address.
Valid network addresses are twelve hex characters long. The
Locally Administered bit must be set to one and the Group bit
set to zero.
c) You may optionally disable link test for the selected port.
Link test applies to 10BaseT adapters only. If the specified
port is cabled to a hub that does not support 10BaseT link
signals then clear the Link Test Enable check box.
d) You may override the default values for the Advanced Adapter
settings at this time. Select ADVANCED to invoke the Adapter
Advanced Setup dialog box and wait for the dialog box to
display. Please note that only knowledgeable system
administrators should modify the Advanced Setup values.
Select CONTINUE when complete to save the settings and return

advanced settings may be configured:
Full Memory Window:
Description: To support peer-to-peer DMA transfers
PeerMaster adapters require a memory window in system
address space to enable peer adapters to access to their
local memory. The location of this window is normally
auto-selected during adapter installation. On some IBM
Model 85 Micro Channel computers, this window is not auto-
configurable, thus default window base addresses are used
by the device driver. This parameter allows manual
override of the default values. The edit box specifies a
megabyte value for a window base address. A value of 200,
for instance, specifies a system memory base address of
200MB. For each adapter, the first configured port sets
the base address for that adapter. A unique value must be
used for each adapter.
Range: 2 - 255
Default: Based upon adapter slot as follows:
slot 1: 255
slot 2: 254
slot 3: 253
slot 4: 252
slot 5: 251
slot 6: 250
slot 7: 249
slot 8: 248
WatchDog Timer:
Description: Time interval, in seconds, indicating how
often a Watchdog command/reply must be exchanged between
the driver and adapter. A value of zero disables the
watchdog function. If the adapter fails to respond to a
watchdog request within the specified timeout, the driver
will reset and restart the adapter.
Range: 0 - 255
Default: 0
e) Click on CONTINUE to save the settings for this PeerMaster
port. The Adapter Setup dialog box will now exit and the
remaining program files will be copied from the PeerMaster
Option Diskette.
7. This step is required to create a virtual adapter (VNET)
consisting of multiple PeerMaster adapters. Do not perform this
step for ports configured as traditional adapters. After
completion of this step, you may return to step 3 of this section
to create another VNET or continue with step 8 to complete the
installation process.
You may press the HELP button at any time during this process to
display on-line information pertaining to the available options.
To display information within the HELP dialog box, click on the
desired field using your mouse or highlight the desired field
using the tab key then press <ENTER>.
a) Select the Create VNET button and wait for the Virtual
Adapter Setup dialog box to appear. This dialog box permits
you to specify the adapters included into the VNET.
b) Click the check box next to each adapter to include it into
this VNET. A check box will not be selectable if:
* The indicated adapter has at least one port configured in
traditional mode, or...
* the indicated adapter is included into another VNET, or...
* no adapter is indicated.
Note: A single VNET must contain one to eight adapters.
Adapters not included into a VNET may be configured
as traditional adapters or as part of another VNET.
c) You may override the factory set network address. Use the
edit box to enter a Locally Administered Network Address.
This address will be used for all ports within the VNET.
Valid network addresses are twelve hex characters long. The
Locally Administered bit must be set to one and the Group bit
set to zero.
d) You may override the default values for the Advanced Virtual
Adapter settings at this time. Select ADVANCED to invoke the
Virtual Adapter Advanced Setup dialog box and wait for the
dialog box to display. Please note that only knowledgeable
system administrators should modify the Advanced Setup
values. Select CONTINUE when complete to save the settings
and return to the Virtual Adapter Setup dialog box. The
following advanced settings may be configured:
Bridge Aging Timer:
Description: When the VNET Switch function is active the
PeerMaster adapters maintain both in-host and on-board
databases to associate network addresses with specific
adapters/ports. Unused entries are periodically purged to
prevent overflow of these databases. This parameter
defines the rate (in seconds) that inactive entries are
purged. Setting this value to zero disables the aging
process (inactive entries are not purged).
Range: 0 - 65535
Default: 120
WatchDog Timer:
Description: Time interval, in seconds, indicating how
often a Watchdog command/reply must be exchanged between
the driver and adapter. A value of zero disables the
watchdog function. If the adapter fails to respond to a
watchdog request within the specified timeout, the driver
will reset and restart the adapter.
Range: 0 - 255
Default: 0
e) Click on CONTINUE. This will cause a Virtual Adapter Port
Setup dialog box to appear. Wait for the new dialog box to
appear.
f) The dialog box indicates which adapter is currently being set
up. Click the check box next to each port to activate it
within the VNET. At least one port must be selected.
g) You may override the default values for the Virtual Adapter
Advanced Port Setup settings at this time. Select ADVANCED to
invoke the Virtual Adapter Advanced Port Setup dialog box and
wait for the dialog box to display. Please note that only
knowledgeable system administrators should modify the
Advanced Setup values. Select CONTINUE when complete to save
the setting and return to the Virtual Adapter Port Setup
dialog box. The following advanced settings may be
configured:
Full Memory Window:
Description: To support peer-to-peer DMA transfers

slot 3: 253
slot 4: 252
slot 5: 251
slot 6: 250
slot 7: 249
slot 8: 248
Link Test Enable:
Description: Link test applies to 10BaseT adapters only.
If the specified port is cabled to a hub that does not
support 10BaseT link signals, then clear this check box.
Settings: Enabled or Disabled
Default: Enabled
h) Click on CONTINUE to save the port settings for this adapter.
This process repeats itself for each adapter included into
the VNET. When the settings for all adapters in the VNET have
been saved, the Virtual Adapter Setup dialog box will exit
and the remaining program files will be copied from the
PeerMaster Option Diskette.
8. Select OK. A prompt will appear, requesting that the system be
restarted so that the changes may take effect. Remove any
diskettes and select RESTART. The computer will be restarted with
the network interface installed.
9. Once restarted, the PeerMaster adapters will be active within your
server. You may re-configure your adapters using the REMOVE
ADAPTER, ADD ADAPTER and CONFIGURE options on the NCPA dialog box.
Using the CONFIGURE option, you may add additional adapters to, or
activate inactive ports within, an existing VNET. You may also
modify basic and advanced configuration parameters associated with
traditional or virtual adapters. These changes will not take
affect until the system is rebooted.
===================================
Section 10: "PeerMaster Statistics"
===================================
The PeerMaster Option Diskette contains a utility program to display
traditional and switch statistics for PeerMaster adapters. The utility
is called QSTATS.EXE and is copied to default Windows NT system
directory during the installation process.
QSTATS may be run from Program Manager or from a DOS command prompt.
The program takes two command line parameters, as follows:
QSTATS /device:NAME /slot:NN
Where:
NAME specifies the driver name to be queried. Each instance of
the PeerMaster driver is given a unique name, such as
quadenet[x], where x is the number that NCPA displays before the
driver name.
NN specifies the slot number of the adapter as reported by NCPA.
For example, NCPA displays the following list of adapters:
[2] IBM Quad PeerMaster Adapter
[3] IBM Quad PeerMaster Adapter
If adapter [2] is installed into slot 7, then statistics for that
adapter are displayed as follows:
QSTATS /device:quadenet2 /slot:7

PeerMaster adapters contain on-board Power-On-Self-Tests
(POST) that run each time the adapter powers up or is
restarted. POST results are verified by the driver prior to
downloading and initializing the adapter. The PeerMaster driver logs
POST errors into the system event log. When this occurs the system
will, upon start-up, display a warning that a device failed to
function properly, and indicates that information is available via the
event viewer.
When the system is up, invoke the event viewer and find the latest
entry entitled QuadEnet in the system log and double click on the
entry. A message in the log will indicate that the adapter returned an
invalid value. Look for a data window at the bottom of the screen
containing text starting with "POST: " followed by an ASCII error
number. Use the following table to interpret and respond to the error.
