Textile, general requirements

3. Additional info regarding Fire general - IKEA requirement

16 CFR 1610 is the US federal standard for testing the flammability of clothing textiles. There
is no equivalent standard for general textiles. IKEA has therefore decided to adopt 16 CFR 1610
as a minimum requirement for general textiles. Any differing or additional requirements are
given in the product's technical description.

For both plain and raised surface textiles1 the flame shall be applied to the face of the
specimen for
1 second, according to 16 CFR 1610.

Pre-treatment as described in 16 CFR 1610.4 (d) and 16 CFR 1610.4 (e) is required only when:
− the textile has a fire retardant finish, or;
− the submitter fails to declare whether the textile has a fire retardant finish.

Raised surface textiles without pile direction: Samples shall be taken from both the warp and
weft directions. The specimens shall be brushed in a direction parallel to the length direction of
the specimen.

If pre-testing does not identify the direction/surface in which the rate of flame spread is
greatest, the test shall be carried out on the fabric’s front side, warp direction.

Deviation in Test Reporting

The classification system used in 16 CFR 1610 to describe the rate of flame spread (Class 1,
Class 2 and Class 3) shall not be used. Instead the average value for the rate of flame spread
shall be reported.
For tests where the stop cord is not burnt through, the following codes are to be used: Surface
Flash: F, Ignition But Extinguished: BE, Not Ignited: NI.

1Definition of raised surface textiles:
All fabrics with intentionally raised fibres or yarn surface. Raised fabrics can be of two types:
− mechanically brushed surfaces, or;
− fabrics where the “pile” is created by the addition of an extra set of yarns to form loops on the surface of the
fabric to create the third dimension effect.
Uncut terry fabric (loops) is not considered as raised surface textile.

Examples of fabrics belonging to the category raised surface textiles:

- Emerized, brushed, sanded and napped fabrics, flannels
- Flocked fabrics
- Plush/velvet, all kind of cut pile.
- Terry cloth
- Corduroy
- Tufted fabrics/Chenille
