* NOTE! Formaldehyde requirement of 16 ppm is valid for all textile items intended for cots. For other bedding the requirement is 20 ppm.
For both plain and raised surface textiles1 the flame shall be applied to the face of the
specimen for
1 second, according to 16 CFR 1610.
Pre-treatment as described in 16 CFR 1610.4 (d) and 16 CFR 1610.4 (e) is required only when:
− the textile has a fire retardant finish, or;
− the submitter fails to declare whether the textile has a fire retardant finish.
Raised surface textiles without pile direction: Samples shall be taken from both the warp and
weft directions. The specimens shall be brushed in a direction parallel to the length direction of
the specimen.
If pre-testing does not identify the direction/surface in which the rate of flame spread is
greatest, the test shall be carried out on the fabric’s front side, warp direction.
___________________________________________________________________________________
1Definition of raised surface textiles:
All fabrics with intentionally raised fibres or yarn surface. Raised fabrics can be of two types:
− mechanically brushed surfaces, or;
− fabrics where the “pile” is created by the addition of an extra set of yarns to form loops on the surface of the
fabric to create the third dimension effect.
Uncut terry fabric (loops) is not considered as raised surface textile.
