Rational Use of Medicines

By: Celeste Rueda Fernández

Introduction

The use of medications is possibly the most commonly used therapeutic resource.
in the field of health, since most of the interventions, both
preventive as well as curative, in this context includes the use of a
medication as an intermediary mechanism to achieve a goal of
concrete health. This implies that the population has been, is, or will be exposed
to a greater or lesser extent to the beneficial effects, and also to the
risks that the use of any medication entails.

The high frequency of use of pharmacological resources, as well as

the extent among the population explains the importance of using drugs
effective and safe solutions that address real therapeutic needs.

The progressive medicalization of the developed population has led to the fact that
some authors define it as 'pharmacolatry' or the worship of the drug as
resolving element or alleviator of all evils.

Prescription often becomes a substitute for assistance.

adequate, especially in primary care, where the lack of time and the
great care pressures are compensated by referring the patient to
specialized level and with the prescription of medications.

Rational Use of Medications

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1985, it defines that there is Use
Rationale of Medications (URM) 'when patients receive the
medication suitable for your clinical needs, in the doses
corresponding to their individual requirements, over a period of time
suitable and at the lowest possible cost for them and for the community.

The Rational Use of Medicines (RUM) is a process that encompasses the

appropriate prescription of medications, the timely availability of
effective, safe, and proven quality medications, at the best value
cost-benefit, in terms of conservation, storage,
adequate dispensing and administration.

The URM promotes the quality of health care, ensuring that

let's use medications only when they are required and understood
clearly the reason for their use and the correct way to use them in doses,
intervals and time periods indicated by the healthcare professional.

Some authors define the rational use of medications as an ideal that

rests on rational prescribing, and this is achieved when a good doctor
informed, using their best judgment, prescribes to their patient in the form of
adequate and for the appropriate period, with the appropriate medication.” (G. Dukes,
1989. Coordinator of the European Regional Office of the WHO). It is about a
concept that involves health administrations, the industry
pharmaceutical, to all healthcare professionals, and to users and patients.

Discussion

To achieve proper management of medications, one must begin

properly imparting the teaching of Pharmacology to the
medical, pharmacy, dentistry and nursing students along with the
provision of objective and truthful information once their studies are completed,
that contribute adequately to their postgraduate training; we cannot
ignore that even today, the sales representatives from the different companies
Pharmaceutical companies are the main source of information and ongoing training.
about medications and therapy within the reach of doctors.

Similarly, consensus meetings can be held to establish

the rational criteria for action against diseases that constitute the
main health problems, establishing protocols that include the
pharmacotherapeutic aspects, creating Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committees
that they edit Pharmacotherapeutic Guidelines, creating the figure of the Advisor of
Medications in Primary Care, improving the management of the medical prescription
and, finally, these measures cannot conclude without making a good
health training for users and patients.

Conclusion

I conclude that the rational use of medications begins even before the
selection of a medication, as promoted by all the measures of
preventive health measures that reduce the need for medication consumption; the
economic incentives exist in liberalized pharmaceutical markets, which
it can promote excessive and inappropriate consumption of medications.
