First riding lessons
Rania and Meg are best friends. They love sport, and because Meg has to use a
wheelchair, they’re always looking for new ideas for sports activities that they can both
do. When Meg’s mother found a place where the girls could learn to ride horses, they
were very excited.
rr seen earch inne ns omen tm
When the girls went to the riding school for their first lesson, the horses looked
enormous, so they were both a bit scared. They soon felt better when they met their
| teacher, Karen, who was really friendly and gave them some carrots for the horses.
| Karen told the girls to hold their hands flat, with their fingers together, and it was
i amazing because the horses took the carrots from their hands so carefully. ‘I don’t
feel terrified now!’ Meg laughed.
Karen gave them hats and boots to wear during the lesson, and then she helped the
girls to get onto the horses and sit comfortably. Meg’s horse was called Star, and Rania’s
was Called Juno. Because this was their first lesson, Karen was in front of them on foot
the whole time and they didn’t go very fast. After they got off the horses, Karen showed
the girls how to feed them. Both the girls thought it was a great experience, and now
| they go riding together every week.

Helping amphibians
by Sam Ortiz
_——
My name’s Sam, and | love amphibians, like frogs and salamanders! | think that amphibians are
interesting because the different types have so many different characteristics. For example,
some are big, some are small, some have amazing colours and others can hide really easily
because they are the same colour as the plants or rocks in their natural habitat.
Amphibians are also interesting for scientists who study the environment because they are not
just predators; they are also prey. They are therefore an important part of the food chain.
However, when humans build towns, cities and roads, they often cover the places where
amphibians live.
My grandparents live in a house with a small garden, and after | talked to them about
amphibians, they decided to do something to help them. So they made a pond at the end of
their garden. Now, some frogs and salamanders have come to live in it. Every weekend, | go
and check the pond. It’s never exactly the same as the week before!
