TAGA-IBO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ACTION RESEARCH

ADDRESSING ABSENTEEISM IN GRADE 9 STUDENTS OF TAGA-IBO

NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL THROUGH DIVERSE STRATEGIES
I. Context and Rationale

Problem Statement Taga-Ibo NHS is experiencing a significant issue of student absenteeism, which
negatively impacts academic performance, classroom engagement, and overall school climate. This
action research project aims to identify the root causes of absenteeism and implement effective
strategies to improve student attendance. Understanding the root causes before implementing any
strategies, it's crucial to identify the root causes of absenteeism. The common factors include of
absenteeism are the following: first, Socioeconomic Factors including poverty, lack of basic needs, and
family issues. Second, Academic Factors including difficulty with coursework, bullying, or lack of
engagement, lack of motivation. Third, health issues including physical or mental health problems. Lastly,
transportation issues including difficulty accessing transportation to and from school.

II. Proposed Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

Tailored Curriculum it develops individualized learning plans to address specific student needs and
interests. Technology Integration like digital learning platforms which utilize digital learning platforms to
provide flexible and engaging learning opportunities. Identify Students at Risk using data analysis to
identify students who are at risk of absenteeism. Giving Positive Reinforcement such as;

* Implementing reward systems to recognize and incentivize regular attendance

* Provide positive feedback and encouragement to students who are making efforts to improve their
attendance.

* Hold regular parent-teacher conferences to discuss student progress and address any concerns.

* Organize community events and workshops to raise awareness about the importance of education and
school attendance.

* Regularly monitor attendance data to identify trends and patterns.

III. Research Questions

1. What are the primary factors contributing to Grade 9 student absenteeism at Taga-Ibo NHS?

2. How can we effectively address these factors to reduce absenteeism rates?

3. What impact will be implemented strategies have on student attendance and academic
performance?

IV. Action Research Methods

A. Participants and/or other sources of data and information

The Data gathered in this study are based on the daily attendance and performance of
Grade 9 Students in Taga-Ibo NHS.
B. Data Gathering Methods

This action research will be accomplished by seeking permission to conduct the study by
sending a letter address to the school head.

C. Data Analysis Plan

Orient teachers about the holistic approach and encourage them to implement the said
approach during their class. Teachers should ask to observe each student’s attendance &
performance.

VII. Plans for Dissemination and Utilization

The study will rely on school attendance at the end of each week to check for absences. The
teachers will then keep a log stating any days on which a student was absent. At the end of
each week, the teacher would ask the student to reflect on the previous week to see if the
method used was helpful, what changes can be made to make it better, the current
struggles/stressors, and the reason for absence if they had any. During the use of the
reward system, the students will keep track of the days they are in school by marking each
day on the calendar that will be hanging in the Learning Center.

After keeping track of data for at least two months collected from this action research
project, the researchers will plan on sharing the results with the students. Discussing what
works best with them as well as actual proof of these strategies giving a positive outcome
would be a good thing for the student to see. Overall, I believe a positive impact will be
made on the students due to the educators showing they care enough about them to figure
out what we can do in order to increase past attendance.
It will also be important to share this information with fellow teachers who may struggle
with other students and their attendance issues. If these strategies work, it could be worth
trying on other grades too. The school head should also know the results so he can suggest
the strategies if needed in the future as well.
I think it is important for the staff there to learn from this study and monitor students
absenteeism as well as possibly put these strategies into place if necessary.
