Structural health monitoring for lightweight complex composite
structures is being investigated in this paper with a data-driven deep
learning approach to facilitate automated learning of the map of
transformed signal features to damage classes. Towards this, a series of
acoustic emission (AE) based laboratory experiments have been carried
out on a composite sample using a piezoelectric AE sensor network. The
registered time-domain AE signals from the assigned sensor networks
on the composite panel are processed with the continuous wavelet
transform to extract time-frequency scalograms. A convolutional neural

extract the discrete damage features from the scalogram images and use
them to classify damage-source regions in the composite panel. The
proposed deep-learning approach has shown an effective damage
monitoring potential with high training, validation and test accuracy for
unseen datasets as well as for entirely new neighboring damage datasets.
Further, the proposed network is trained, validated and tested only for
the peak-signal data extracted from the raw AE data. The application of
peak-signal scalogram data has shown a significant improvement in
damage-source classification performance with high training, validation
and test accuracy.

The analysis of the evolution of modal properties and its relationship
with changes in environmental properties (i.e. ambient temperature and
relative humidity) is of high importance since their effects along time
can mask the influence of structural damage. While structural
monitoring studies to assess the relationship between modal parameters
and environmental conditions are abundantly available for modern
materials constructions (i.e. concrete or steel), very few studies are
reported for adobe buildings. The present paper focuses on the study of
the short and long-term structural behavior of existing adobe buildings
through the long-term monitoring of ambient vibration and
environmental conditions. With this purpose, the paper describes in

detail the case study of the San Pedro Apostol Church of Andahuaylillas
located in Cusco, inside the Andean region of Peru, a 16thcentury
church considered as a masterpiece of South American baroque
architecture. The paper starts with a historical, architectural, and
structural description of the case study. Then, it describes the
implementation of a long-term monitoring system of ambient vibration
and environmental variables, as well as the results of almost one year of
continuous monitoring process. Finally, the obtained results of natural
frequencies are correlated with ambient parameters, demonstrating
different timescale influences in the modal properties due to daily and
seasonal variations of the environmental conditions.

Monitoring and structural health assessment are the primary requirements
for performance evaluation of damaged bridges. This paper highlights the
case-study of a damaged Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridge structure by
considering the outcomes of destructive testing, Non-Destructive Testing
(NDT) evaluations, static and 3D non-linear analysis methods. Finite
element (FE) modelling of this structure is being done using the material
properties extracted by the in-situ testing. Analysis is carried out to
evaluate the bridge damage based on the data recorded after the static

software). Extensive concrete cracking and high value of crack width are
found to be the major problems, leading to lowering the performance of
the bridge. As a solution, this paper proposes a proper Structural Health
Monitoring (SHM) system, that will extend the life cycle of the bridge
with minimal repair costs and reduced risk of failure. This system is based
on the installation of three different types of sensors: Liquid Levelling
sensors (LLS) for measurement of vertical displacement, Distributed Fiber
Optic Sensors (DFOS) for crack monitoring, and Weigh in Motion (WIM)
devices for monitoring of moving loads on bridge.

Battery lifespan enhancement strategies for edge
computing-enabled wireless Bluetooth mesh sensor

Abstract Wireless sensor networks (WSN) offer an automated, convenient, and
low-cost option for building IoT networks for monitoring the structural
health of complex infrastructures. The limited bandwidth of a typical
WSN is not favorable for intensive data transfer. Therefore, utilizing
edge computing that allows raw data to be processed and compressed at
IoT devices enables efficient data transfer to the central terminal for data
storage and further analytics. However, edge computing requires an
additional microcontroller unit (MCU), which significantly increases the
edge device power consumption and thus reduces the device's battery
lifespan. In this paper, three strategies are developed for saving the
battery power of sensor devices with edge computing: (1) managing the
connectivity settings of the wireless protocol settings, (2) managing the
operations of the edge computing chip, and (3) adding battery capacity
with parallel connections. The first strategy focuses on fine-tuning the
trade-off between the WSN data throughput and power consumption.
The second strategy develops two modes for power saving in certain
computationally relaxing periods: Shutdown mode and Low-power
mode. The Shutdown mode suspends the operations of the edge
computing chip, allowing the edge computing chip to run for a limited
time per day. The Low-power mode allows continuous operation of the
edge computing chop at low clock speed, which consumes less current.
The third strategy doubles the device lifespan by doubling the battery
charge capacity using parallel connections. Combining all three
strategies significantly enhances the sensor battery lifespan from three
weeks to at least six months, notably reducing the frequency of on-site
hardware maintenance while providing smooth data transfer due to edge
computing.

Abstract A new generation of systems appeared with the birth of Cyber-Physical
Systems (CPS) that integrated computational and physical capabilities.
CPS represents an emerging domain as it has an important interest in the
literature due to its interaction with Structural Health Monitoring
System applications. In this paper, we present a deep investigation of
SHM and wireless sensing technologies towards an efficient CPS.
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) based on wireless sensor networks
(WSNs) has the potency to reduce the cost of installation and
maintenance of public and private infrastructure. Many types of
research are interested in SHM using WSN due to its application
domain diversity and its importance in public safety. WSN networks
can be a prominent candidate to solve many SHM problems thanks to its
implementation simplicity and its significant cost reductions. We
present a comprehensive survey about SHM based on new technologies
and methods including the internet of things (IoT), Software-defined
Networking (SDN), fog and cloud computing. SHM application
domains are also highlighted with analytic research domains, projects,
testbeds, and experimental works. Besides that, this investigation
pinpoints SHM functionalities (damage detection, prognostic and risk
assessment) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) contributions for SHM such
as sensor placement and clustering and its benefits on energy
optimization. The main challenges of WSN design, energy
consumption, damage prediction, SHM mobility, SHM large scale were
presented and discussed.

Damage detection of structural members using
internet of things (IoT) paradigm

Abstract Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) has gained a lot of importance in
today’s scenario. Significant reduction in the cost of sensors and
connectivity, made remote data collection possible to monitor the
structures and perform critical analysis so that actions can be taken to
assess and enhance the residual life of the structures. Internet of Things
(IoT) is the system of smart sensors that combines sensing and
transmission of various responses of the structures to distant servers
which continuously processes and monitors these responses. The present
paper proposes an integrated platform of IoT for damage detection using
a Wi-Fi module, Raspberry Pi, (Piezoelectric) PZT sensors along with
Digital to Analog (DAC) and Analog to Digital converters (ADC).
Responses from the host structure are extracted by the PZT sensors and
a mathematical model is proposed to identify and quantify the damage
compared with responses of the healthy structural member. The
algorithm is executed using Python in Raspberry Pi. The present work
includes testing of simply supported aluminium beam surface bonded
with PZT transducers where one is an actuator and the other is a sensor.
The beam is excited by a sinusoidal wave through an actuator. The
digital wave sent from Raspberry Pi is converted to analog using DAC
and excites the beam through the actuator. The responses received from
the sensor is converted to digital form using ADC. The responses are
initially taken for healthy beam and for the same beam, a sequential
increase in crack widths is induced. Responses of the healthy and
damaged beam are compared using Cross-Correlation (CC) damage
index to identify the extent of the damage. The CC values are analyzed
and sent to the cloud where an alert message is sent to mobile if the CC
value exceeds the threshold limit.

Abstract Detecting and monitoring the damage locations of in-service reinforced
concrete (RC) structures is difficult as they exhibit more complex
geometries and consist of composite materials. In this study, a new
method for detecting the source location of acoustic emission (AE)
signals in RC structures using machine learning was introduced and
tested on an in-service RC column. An impulse response test was
conducted using an AE testing system to gather data regarding the
source locations. Meanwhile, the source locations on the test column
were generated through manual hits. The corresponding AE data were
collected using a AE data acquisition system. The significant AE
parameters were determined using neighborhood component analysis for
feature selection to obtain a dataset for machine learning. Further, a
support vector machine classifier was adopted to classify the source
locations of the columns for three sensor groups. Furthermore, the
source locations were predicted using feedforward backpropagation
neural networks. This study validated the detectability of AE signals in
RC columns and proposed a novel detection method, which can be
employed to perform continuous nondestructive tests on in-service RC
columns.

Emergence of Machine Learning Techniques in
Ultrasonic Guided Wave-based Structural Health
Monitoring: A Narrative Review
Type Journal Article

Author Tamara Nestorović
Abstract Identification of damage in its early stage can have a great contribution
in decreasing the maintenance costs and prolonging the life of valuable
structures. Although conventional damage detection techniques have a
mature background, their widespread application in industrial practice is
still missing. In recent years the application of Machine Learning (ML)
algorithms have been more and more exploited in structural health
monitoring systems (SHM). Because of the superior capabilities of ML
approaches in recognizing and classifying available patterns in a dataset,
they have demonstrated a significant improvement in traditional damage
identification algorithms. This review study focuses on the use of
machine learning (ML) approaches in Ultrasonic Guided Wave (UGW)-
based SHM, in which a structure is continually monitored using
permanent sensors. Accordingly, multiple steps required for performing
damage detection through UGWs are stated. Moreover, it is outlined that
the employment of ML techniques for UGW-based damage detection
can be subtended into two main phases: (1) extracting features from the
data set, and reducing the dimension of the data space, (2) processing the
patterns for revealing patterns, and classification of instances. With this
regard, the most frequent techniques for the realization of those two
phases are elaborated. This study shows the great potential of ML
algorithms to assist and enhance UGW-based damage detection
algorithms.

Abstract The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies into Building
Information Modelling (BIM) provides significant opportunities to
support useful services and functionalities for end users in buildings,
enabling socalled smart spaces (e.g. smart buildings and smart homes).
Current approaches perform this integration to ac cess the deployed IoT
devices once the building is constructed using Building Automation
Systems (BAS), Building Information Systems (BIS) and Building
Control Systems (BCS). Thus, the integration of IoT devices into the
early stages of building design to describe IoT scenarios and IoT
practices is still neglected, despite the benefits it can provide by being
involved in the entire building lifecycle, e.g. cost estimation, stronger
facility management, collaborative approach, simplification of tasks for
developers/programmers through the integra tion with BIS, BAS and
BCS, and a more holistic management of the IoT infrastructure.

Abstract Integrated structural health monitoring (SHM) uses the mechanism
analysis, monitoring technology and data analytics to diagnose the
classification, location and significance of structural situations (e.g.,
sudden or cu mulative damages) to ensure the functionality and
operation of bridges. Integrated SHM systems have improved the
maintenance, management and decision-making of bridges by
continuously monitoring and evaluating working conditions. This review
article discusses the current process and future trends of bridge
monitoring focusing on the cutting-edge SHM technologies,
transmission and analytics methods of the sensing data, and prediction
and early-warning models. In particular, four extensively applied
sensing technologies (i.e., fiber optic sensors, piezoelectric sensors,
global navigation satellite system and magnetostrictive sensors) are
reviewed and compared, the wireless data transmission approaches (i.e.,
ZigBee, Bluetooth, NB-IoT, Wi-Fi, LoRa) are discussed, the artificial

Abstract Conventional damage detection techniques are gradually being replaced
by state-of-the-art smart monitoring and decisionmaking solutions. Near
real-time and online damage assessment in structural health monitoring
(SHM) systems is a promising transition toward bridging the gaps
between the past’s applicative inefficiencies and the emerging
technologies of the future. In the age of the smart city, Internet of Things

Machine learning (ML) algorithms are thus providing the necessary
tools to augment the capabilities of SHM systems and provide intelligent
solutions for the challenges of the past. This article aims to clarify and
review the ML frontiers involved in modern SHM systems. A detailed
analysis of the ML pipelines is provided, and the in-demand methods

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have been used in various
monitoring applications for the past two decades, as one of the very few
options to provide absolute positions in a global reference frame.
However, high performance GNSS stations are expensive, and
sometimes may be impractical because of their size, power consumption
or software requirements. Thus, the use of low-cost GNSS stations for
structural health monitoring (SHM) has gained increasing attention. This
paper presents a detailed experimental assessment of multiple
combinations of GNSS receivers and antennas, and highlights an optimal
cost-efficient solution for monitoring applications. Several sets of
Abstract processing parameters and constraints are also evaluated using open
source RTKLib software. The performance of the proposed solution is
evaluated through two experimental dynamic scenarios, proving its
ability to track quick displacements down to 4 mm and oscillations of 1
cm with a frequency up to 0.25 Hz with a 1 Hz receiver. Finally, a two-
week dataset acquired from on a network of low-cost GNSS stations
deployed on a suspended bridge is used to validate on-site performance.
Results show good agreement between GNSS time series, traditional
displacement sensors, and numerical simulations made using an
operational mechanical model of the bridge, highlighting the potential of
such low-cost solutions for structural health monitoring applications.

Modal frequency is an important indicator for structural health
assessment. Previous studies have shown that this indicator is
substantially affected by the fluctuation of ambient conditions, such as
temperature and humidity. Therefore, recognizing the pattern between
modal frequency and ambient conditions is necessary for reliable long-
term structural health assessment. In this article, a novel machine-
learning algorithm is proposed to automatically select relevance features
in modal frequency-ambient condition pattern recognition based on
structural dynamic response and ambient condition measurement. In
contrast to the traditional feature selection approaches by examining a

large number of combinations of extracted features, the proposed
algorithm conducts continuous relevance feature selection by
introducing a sophisticated hyperparameterization on the weight
parameter vector controlling the relevancy of different features in the
prediction model. The proposed algorithm is then utilized for structural
health assessment for a reinforced concrete building based on 1-year
daily measurements. It turns out that the optimal model class including
the relevance features for each vibrational mode is capable to capture the
pattern between the corresponding modal frequency and the ambient
conditions.

The design feasibility and structural integrity of prefabricated
construction elements is assessed (concrete cantilever slab carrying
thermal insulation break reinforced with steel/basalt rebars and ultra-
high-performance concrete) by performing incremental bending tests.
The developed damage mechanisms govern failure, therefore their
identification appears crucial: concrete cracking, rebarsconcrete
interface debonding, rebars slippage, concrete crush under compression.
However, the complex fracture cannot be effectively characterized by
measuring the deterioration of the mechanical properties. In this study,
Acoustic Emission (AE) is applied to highlight internal damage
progress. It is found based on cumulative AE hits distribution under

Abstract
initiation is identified. The damage severity is quantified using
Load/Calm ratios. AE sources localization identifies the moment at
which the rebars plastically deform; debond from concrete; slip and
when concrete cracks and crushes under compression. The damage
mechanisms are discriminated based on acoustic signal features
distribution as damage evolves (specifically, average frequency and the
ratio of rise time over amplitude). It is shown that AE appears an
essential and accurate monitoring method that fully characterizes the
damage on complex structures. The promising results open new horizons
towards the design of fully autonomous prefabricated elements carrying
a smart on-line AE sensing tool. Ó 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights

Structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage assessment of civil
engineering infrastructure are complex tasks. Structural health and
strength of structures are influenced by various factors, such as the
material production stage, transportation, placement, workmanship,
formwork removal, and concrete curing. Technological advancements
and the widespread availability of Wi-Fi networks has resulted in SHM
shifting from traditional wire-based methods to Internet of Things (IoT)-
based real-time wireless sensors. Comprehensive structural health
assessment can be performed through the efficient use of real-time test
data on structures obtained from various types of IoT sensors, which
monitor several health parameters of structures, available on cloudbased
Abstract data storage systems. The sensor data may be subsequently used for
various applications, such as forecasting masonry construction
deterioration, predicting the early-stage compressive strength of
concrete, forecasting the optimum time for the removal of formwork,
vibration and curing quality control, crack detection in buildings,
pothole detection on roads, determination of the construction quality,
corrosion diagnosis, identification of various damage typologies and
seismic vulnerability assessment. This review paper summarizes the
applications of the wireless IoT technology in the monitoring of civil
engineering infrastructure. In addition, several case studies on real
structures and laboratory investigations for monitoring the structural
health of civil engineering constructions are discussed.

This paper proposed an Acoustic Emission (AE) based Smart Composite
Fastener (SCF) concept for health monitoring of bonded/bolted
composite single lap joints. The SCF was made of 3D-printed
continuous carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastic materials with an
embedded piezoelectric sensor. The SCF detected signals were found to
be successfully associated with AE damage sources during the loading
period. It was discovered that the adhesive crack/delamination AE
sources resulted in burst-type signals with identifiable onset and end,
whereas AE sources of frictional sliding between the SCF and fastener
Abstract holes resulted in continuous-type signals producing broad frequency
content. Furthermore, the amplitudes of the burst-type signal measured
from the network of SCFs were successfully correlated with the
locations of the damages. In the direction away from the damage, the
amplitudes of the burst-type voltages measured from the SCF showed a
decreasing trend, with 10195mv, 9,995mv, and 7,426mv respectively.
Generally, the research in this paper explores the correlation between the
voltage signal from a damaged AE source and the SCF, providing the
feasibility of using a novel SCF for health monitoring in composite joint
structures.

The value of monitoring a structural health

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems are adopted to acquire timely
and continuous data on the state of civil structures, aerospace vehicles, and
industrial machines, which deteriorate due to slow processes, such as
corrosion and fatigue, and shock events, including natural and man-made
disasters. The components of SHM systems themselves are exposed to
deterioration after their installation; thereby, they might provide altered
information to decision-makers. To account for this issue, Sensor
Validation Tools (SVTs) have been developed to give insight into the
actual condition of the SHM systems. In the last decade, researchers have
Abstract
exploited the Value of Information (VoI) from Bayesian decision theory to
quantify the benefit of the information provided by an SHM system,
implicitly assuming that it is working correctly when interrogated. The
benefit of the information provided by SVTs on the state of an SHM system
has never been investigated. This paper addresses this topic and extends the
classical VoI framework to quantify the additional benefit brought by the
information on the state of the SHM system to the decision problems it is
meant to support. A numerical analysis, as well as a methodology
demonstration on a real bridge, are presented to discuss the framework.
