Introduction and tips

Welcome to our series of spelling workbooks for kindergarten to grade 5.

These workbooks help students improve their spelling. Students read words, say them out loud,
trace, write, rewrite and match words in a variety of ways. Repetition is at the core of these
exercises.

Grade 3 spelling workbook

The grade 3 spelling workbook focuses on:
 Spelling sight words, or high frequency words, at the grade 3 level.
 Spelling two, three and four letter blend words.
 Spelling two and three letter ending words.
 Spelling irregular plural words and irregular verbs.
 Spelling different sounds: ch and gh words, and open and closed syllable words.
 Spelling prefixes and suffixes.
 Spelling –c, -k, ck words, silent letter words and soft c and g words.
Each section starts with an exercise to practice tracing, writing and rewriting a set of words. This is
followed by a variety of spelling exercises on the same words.

Tips on using the book

Help your students engage their senses in learning each word. Ask them to look at the word and say
it out loud; let them hear you say the word.
Encourage your student to recognize spelling patterns. For example, what rhymes with show? Know
rhymes with show.
Ask your student to think of words that are similar to the group of words being studied. For example,
what other words include the letters ‘air’? Ask them to try to spell those words.
Keep the learning fun. Give positive praise and encouragement along the way.
Practice little and often. Don't have your student complete an entire section in one go.

Other books in this series

In our grade K - 5 spelling workbooks, students explore new word families and learn new spelling
patterns. The exercises become more advanced for each grade-level workbook.

On a moonlyt night, Benny the rabbete was hungry. He wanted a carrut but was too lazy
to dig one up. “I’ll order a delevere!” he decided. "Who shall I call?"
He wrote the names of six friends on a notepad, grabbed a dais from his game and rolled
it. It landed on the number four. That would be Carl, the cuneree. “Can you bring me a
carrut, Carl?” Benny asked his friend over the phone.
Carl had an idea. “I’ll play a trick!” he thought. Instead of a carrut, he gave Benny a giant
leaf.
Benny took a bite and made a funny face. “Next time, I’ll dig up the carrut myself!”

Cheffe Lily was busy creating a faentastik dessert: a choculut tometoe cake!
It was a compleks recipe, and everyone in the kitchen watched closely.
Suddunlee: Boom! The cake exploded, sending tometoe chunks and
choculut everywhere. The cheffe's hat flew off, landing in a bowl of batter.
Everyone froze, then burst into laughter. Cheffe Lily laughed too, covered in
choculut and tometoe sauce. “Well, I guess it’s a new trend: Tometoe Surprise

Living in a small veellage with traditional values, Timmy was tawt by his
grandpa to always be honeste. One day, he herde a strange noise from the
barn. Sinse he was curious, he peeked inside and saw a dancing cow! “This is
confucing!” Timmy said, scratching his head. “Cows don’t dance!” The cow
stopped, winked, and kept dancing. Timmy ran back, shouting, "Honest, I saw
it dance!" But nobody believed him since cows aren't supposed to have those
kinds of moves.
