Character Sketch of Ajit

Ajit comes across as a dominating and inconsiderate husband. He invades
Nomita’s privacy by reading her letters and disregards her feelings when she
protests, often laughing at her or scolding her. His treatment of Nomita’s mother is
equally harsh, as he considers her requests for help a nuisance rather than a
responsibility.

Instead of understanding his wife, Ajit tries to justify his behavior by accusing her of
dishonesty. When Nomita finally rebels by setting her sari on fire, his confidence
collapses and fear takes over. This reveals his insecurity and his fear of losing
control over her.

Character Sketch of Nomita

Nomita is portrayed as a woman of dignity and inner strength. Although she
endures Ajit’s controlling nature for some time, she resents his lack of respect and
constant interference in her life. She wishes to live with self-respect and feels torn
between her devotion to her mother and her frustration with her mother’s
continuous dependence.

Her act of setting her sari on fire is symbolic — it is not only an expression of
protest but also a declaration of her refusal to remain oppressed. This bold step
highlights her transformation from a submissive wife to a woman determined to
defend her freedom and individuality.

Character Sketch of Grandfather

Grandfather is a calm and patient man who sits under the banyan tree and listens
to travelers who stop by. He does not give advice but allows people to share their
troubles, which makes them feel relieved. He believes that everyone carries
burdens in life and needs a pause before continuing the journey. His kindness and
wisdom make him a source of peace and support for the villagers.

Character Sketch of Ratna

Ratna is a cheerful and helpful woman who listens to her colleagues’ problems
during lunch breaks. She never judges or gossips, but creates a safe space where
others can open up. She believes that sharing difficulties reduces stress and
lightens the mind. Though not a counselor, her caring attitude makes her a
horegallu, giving strength and comfort to those around her.
