• Qalyubia Drinking Water and Wastewater
Company
It went through several steps to establish it, as the
decision of the Minister of Housing, Utilities and
Urban Communities No. 126 of 2011 was issued to
license the establishment of an Egyptian joint-stock
company affiliated with the Qalyubia Governorate’s
drinking water and wastewater. The Chairman of the
Holding Company issued decision No.
2013/1/12 dated 2012 for the year 7 to form the
Board of Directors of the Qalyubia Drinking Water
and Wastewater Company.
• The purpose of establishing the Drinking Water
and Sanitation Company is to purify, desalinate,
transport, distribute and sell drinking water and
collect, treat and safely dispose of sewage water.
The nature of the service it provides is to supply
pure, safe drinking water to all urban and rural
areas in the governorate in appropriate quantities
and pressures and to cover all urban and rural areas
in the governorate with safe sanitation service,
protection and development of investments. The
number of company branches has reached 12
branches, the number of subscribers to the service
is 699,580 citizens and the number of employees in
the company is 7,100 em
• The degree of distinction of the Qalyubia Drinking
Water and Sanitation Company has reached a high
position, as they hold a ceremony to honor the
distinguished in the Qalyubia Water celebration of
Labor Day. This celebration is keen to be held every
year to express thanks and appreciation to everyone
for their clear efforts throughout the year, and to
motivate them to provide the best. The nominated
Siryaqos Water Station in Qalyubia has obtained the
TMS global certificate in the field of managing the
operation and maintenance of drinking water
stations, indicating that the station operates with a
Dyna-Sand system with a design capacity of 145
thousand cubic meters per day. The Chairman of the
Qalyubia Water Company confirmed that this
certificate is granted after fulfilling and passing the
requirements in the field of operation, maintenance
and human resources, represented in the extent of
evaluating the performa.
Safety, health, quality, laboratories and their
accreditation by the Inspection Committee.nce of
workers.ployees.
• The Qalyubia Drinking Water and Sanitation
Company has many branches. I was trained at the
company' Benha Water Station. I was trained in the
Chemistry and Quality Laboratories Department at
the station. We took a course inside the station to
learn how it works and the stages of water
purification, which are as follows:
• First: The station draws water from the waterway
through the intake, passing through the filters. This
is considered the first purification process and
means separating solid materials and floating weeds
in the water. The filters are either mechanical or
manual, and they are cleaned daily to ensure that
the intake is not blocked. The flow of water to the
station stops, and the water moves from the intake
through the pipes to the turbid water wells by
gravity.
Second: The station contained two turbid water
wells, each of which was connected to three pumps
to draw water, me
-How are turbidity septic tanks cleaned?
Turbidity septic tanks are cleaned one by one by

shutting off the water to the septic tank to be

cleaned, then

emptying the septic tank of water, and after

emptying completely
the walls and floor of the septic tank are cleaned
and sterilized well

and after finishing, the septic tank is filled again

and waiting for four to six hours until the sediments

in the water settle, after which

the pumps connected to the septic tank are turned

on and
the other septic tank is cleaned in the same way.
: After the water enters the intake to the water
wells,
Thirdly, the turbidity is taken through the turbid
water pumps, then
The initial chlorine is added to eliminate the living
organisms that cause diseases, control the taste and
odor, reduce the pH of the water and make it
suitable for the work of
The chemicals, and the amount of chlorine is
determined based on the
Break Point experiment, and then the chemical
materials (alum) are injected to all the fine bodies
together
To form larger bodies, and the amount of alum is
determined by the
Chart test, after which a rapid stirring process
occurs to mix the turbid water to form flakes larger
than the small particles that do not settle due to its
weight, and this is known as sedimentation, and the
definition of sedimentation
Is the process of adding the sedimentary materials
to the water and is always accompanied by the
process of quickly mixing the turbid water with the
sedimentary materia
• After the purification process is completed and
before the water is released to the citizen, we must
ensure that this water complies with the
specifications of the Ministry of Health by
conducting some chemical, biological,
bacteriological and physical analyses to ensure that
the water complies with the standard specifications
of the Ministry of Health. Examples of chemical
analyses include measuring chlorides in the water,
measuring alkalinity, and measuring water hardness.
Examples of physical analyses include measuring the
chloride content, measuring pH, and measuring the
conductivity of water. There is also a
spectrophotometer in the laboratory that measures
the percentage of iron in the water, manganese,
silica, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. As for the
biological laboratory, it is responsible for measuring
the amount of algae and parasites. The amount of
algae or parasites must not increase beyond the
conformity of the specifications of the Ministry of
Health, because algae, when they increase, cause
problems inside the station, and the first of these is
The problems are corrosion in the surface of the
filters and cause
the presence of a sticky substance and it spreads
unresponsively in the water
It also causes the filters to become clogged and this
causes a reduction in
the efficiency of the station and also causes the
transformation of problems
Outside the station because when the water comes
out at a high
algae rate, this causes the final chlorine to run out
The subject is to preserve the water until it reaches
the citizen. For this reason, the percentage of young

To ensure the removal of all algae, fungi

And microorganisms that cause diseases

Experiences gained

First: Breakpoint experiment

1(Theoretical explanation of the experiment:

When chlorine is added to water, the process of

killing bacteria begins

and oxidizing iron, manganese, ammonia, etc. and

becomes

combined chlorine, but at a certain point, the

chlorine does not find

anything to combine with and becomes free or

residual. This point
is the breaking point, the point at which the
chlorine does not find

anything to combine with because there is nothing

left of bacteria, iron, or manganese. This is what we
want from the breaking point, which is the presence
of a certain amount of free chlorine in the water.

2(Explanation of the practical steps of the

experiment:

1- Bring 10 1-liter bottles that are brown in color

2- Prepare doses with concentrations starting from

1 to 10 ppm.
3- We bring 10 brown bottles and fill them with 1
liter of turbid water, then we add to the ten bottles

different concentrations of chlorine from 1 to 10

ppm
4- After 30 minutes, we calculate the remaining
chlorine in each bottle while maintaining the
temperature not to exceed 25 degrees. Then we
make a table for the amount of chlorine remaining
in each bottle with the concentration of chlorine
added to this bottle. Then we make a graph
between the concentration added on the horizontal
line and the chlorine and the remaining on the
vertical line.
Second: The jar test experiment
The jar test experiment is carried out through
several steps
1(The operating temperature at the site is the same
as the room temperature, so the water under test
is taken directly from the station and prepared at
the highest speed so that the water temperature
does not change.
2(Collect 8 liters of turbid water sample and put in
each of the six cups an amount of 1000 ml
liters of turbid water.
3(Place the cups inside the device, then drop the
stirring feathers into the cups and stir the water at a
speed equal to the speed of the water in the station
basins.
4(Add carefully and quickly using a pipette the dose
of chlorine provided to all the cups and use the
pipette to add semi-increasing doses in succession
to the six test cups carefully and quickly as possible.
5(Continue rapid stirring for about one minute

One minute after the beginning of adding the alum,

reduce the stirring speed

to reach 20 or 40 rpm. Continue stirring

the solution for a period ranging from 20 to 30

minutes. Note

the speed at which the dew begins to form in each

cup, its shape

and size.
6(Stop stirring and allow the dew to settle

in the cups for 5 or 10 minutes. Usually, a cloudy

sample indicates inefficient clarification, while a
well-sedimented sample appears clear because it
contains heavy aggregates weight.

7( At the same time, draw the amount of water that

represents a height of 7 cm from the top of the cup,
which is approximately half a liter, from the six cups
and collect it in six laboratories to conduct the
remaining tests.

Third: I benefited from this training by knowing the
amount of efforts made by chemists in water station
laboratories to provide clean and clear water to
citizens without any pollutants and in quantities
that meet their needs, regardless of the
circumstances. I was also able to increase my skills
in speaking to others, presenting my ideas and
expressing my opinion in an open manner, and also
learning to analyze the data given to me to obtain
the best possible result and perform my work in an
organized manner.
