Note to the Reader
Chinese Personal Names
With the exception of Wang Zhaojun, a person is always mentioned by
his or her family name and given name (in that order), even when the
zi 字 (polite name), hao 號 (style name), or another form of appellation
is used in the original text. Furthermore, when the context is clear, only
the family name is used. This practice also applies in my translations of the
titles of poems and prose pieces where personal names are mentioned. In
citing English translations of Chinese texts, I have silently converted the
spelling of proper names into the standard pinyin system except in book
titles. Unless otherwise noted, all translations are mine.
Dates
Years are given according to the modern Western calendar, but Chinese
months and days are retained. Thus, the fifth month of the fourth year
of the Jiayou era is given as the fifth month of 1059. When desirable, the
precise date in Western calendar is provided in parentheses.
Citations
For multivolume compilations with continuous pagination, juan 卷 and
page numbers are provided, with a period in between (e.g., QSS, 467.5667).
For those with separate pagination for each volume, a colon separates the
volume number from juan and page numbers (e.g., QSW, 106:2310.219).
xii Note to the Reader
In cases of premodern Chinese sources that have two juan designated
as 卷上 and 卷下, I use capital letters rather than numbers to translate
the juan number. For example, 卷上頁23 is translated as A.23 rather than
1.23. The same practice is adopted for sources that have three juan, desig-
nated as 卷上, 卷中, and 卷下. 卷下頁23 is cited as C.23 rather than 3.23. If
a juan has two parts, they are designated with capital letters. Thus, 漢書
卷九十四下頁 3807 is given as HS, 94B.3807.
Works that are quoted or cited from large collations such as QSS and
QSW are not listed in the bibliography.
Introduction
A poetic culture consists of a body of shared values and conventions that
inform and condition the composition and interpretation of poetry in a
particular historical period. It intersects with and is affected by trends in
other cultural fields, such as politics and religion. Its most salient features
are often crucially shaped by its relationship with its predecessors. Ele-
ments of material culture also factor in its formation and transformation.
This book studies Wang Anshi 王安石 (1021–86) in connection with the
poetic culture of the Song period (906–1279). It does not offer a compre-
hensive discussion of either Wang or Song poetic culture; rather, it aims
to focus on a cluster of issues that are central to the understanding of
both.1 These issues vary in nature and scope, but they all bear the stamp
of the period and Wang’s distinct personality.
By way of introduction, I would like to mention three backdrops
against which the issues in this book are explored. The first and most
important is the relationship between Song and Tang poetry. Indeed, Song
poetry is perhaps best understood in terms of its adoption of and deviation
from various Tang models over the course of its development. The Song
literati were largely responsible for establishing the comprehensive and
graded Tang canon as we know it today. Among other things, they pro-
duced an extensive body of critical and commentarial writings, diligently
collected and scrupulously edited the works of many Tang poets, com-
piled many anthologies of Tang poetry, and constructed a fairly broad
1. I should clarify that this book deals with issues concerning the shi 詩 form of
poetry. The song lyric (詞) in the Song had its own distinct issues and concerns. For
more recent studies in English, see Egan, Problem of Beauty, 237–347; Owen, Just a Song,
esp. 1–59.
2 Introduction
and consistent narrative of Tang poetic history on the basis of a clearly
articulated hierarchy of values.
An unintended but far-reaching consequence of the canonization of
Tang poetry as the unsurpassed and unsurpassable model was a profound
and pervasive sense of belatedness among Song poets. A remark attri
buted to Wang epitomizes the feeling that all that could be achieved had
already been achieved: “The finest language in the world has already been
exhausted by Du Fu; the plainest language, by Bai Juyi” (世間好語言,已
被老杜道盡;世間俗語言,已被樂天道盡).2 The anxiety experienced
by Song poets did not lead to paralysis of will or impaired functioning,
however. In struggling to emerge out of the shadow of their Tang prede-
cessors and stake their own identity, they used a wide range of strategies.
In a seminal essay that draws on poetic and critical texts from the late
Northern Song, Stuart Sargent discusses six such strategies. One of them
is “antithetical correction of a predecessor’s phrase,” which is effected
when an author “‘foregrounds’ his own making by contradicting what
an earlier poet has said.”3
The closest native term for “antithetical correction” is fan’an 翻案, lit-
erally, reversal of a case. As a form of contrarianism for achieving novelty
and salience, fan’an has received considerable scholarly attention, although
no consensus has been established about its precise meaning and appli-
cation.4 For heuristic purposes, we may divide it into two distinguishable
but not mutually exclusive types: rhetorical and polemical. The former
is almost identical to what Sargent calls antithetical correction. Its poetic
interest lies in the contrary adaptation of words and phraseology of earlier
2. Chen Fu, Chen Fuzhi shihua, 291.
3. Sargent, “Can Late Comers Get There First?,” 177. Sargent’s grouping of the six
strategies is based on Bloom’s scheme of six “revisionary ratios” in Anxiety of Influence.
For an application of Bloom’s theory to Song poetic culture, see Chen Zhaoyin, Songdai
shiren.
4. Zhang Gaoping (“Songshi yu fan’an”) expounds eight intellectual, cultural, and
poetic reasons for the prevalence of fan’an in the Song; see also his discussion in Songshi
zhi chuancheng, 13–116. For the influence of Chan Buddhist modes of discourse on the
use of fan’an in Song poetry, see Zhou Yukai, Wenzi chan yu Songdai shixue, 194–206. A
more recent study can be found in Zhang Jing, Qi zhong you dao, 92–130. For a collection
of illustrations of fan’an, see Chen Yiqin, Shici jifa lishi leibian, 779–85. For Wang’s use
of fan’an, see Chen Zheng, Wang Anshi shi yanjiu, 287–93.
Introduction 3
texts to effect novelty. In polemical reversal, on the other hand, attention
is drawn to ideas and sentiments that run counter to established views
and conventional wisdom. There may or may not be any recognizable
manipulation of verbal elements from any definable prior source(s). The
subgenre of “poems on history” (詠史詩), that is, those that describe
and reflect on historical figures or events, provides a particularly tempt-
ing and fertile ground for exercises in this type of reversal, in which
statements are sometimes found that border on the sensational. In chap-
ter 1, I offer a case study of the potential moral problematics in the use of
polemical reversal.
Wang’s role in the Song canonization of Tang poetry was multi
faceted. In his early thirties, he edited a collection of two hundred or so
poems by Du Fu 杜甫 (712–70) that were not in circulation at the time.
A poem he wrote around the same time on a portrait of Du turned out
to be a foundational text in solidifying Du’s status as the greatest of all
poets on moral and artistic grounds. His comments and remarks on var-
ious Tang poets were widely recorded and appeared to be quite influential
as well as controversial. He also occupied a unique position as the only
scholar-poet of high renown in the entire Northern Song to have under-
taken anthologizing Tang poetry. By examining one of his compilations,
in chapter 2, I shine the spotlight on a less explored area in the Song
canonization of Tang poetry: the discordance between canon formation
and anthology compilation that complicates our understanding of the
relationship between the two.
One of the most consequential outcomes of the formation of the
Tang poetic canon was the establishment of Du Fu’s poetic supremacy.
One of the most significant theoretical offshoots of the formation of Du’s
ultimate canonical status was the idea of late style. As a concept, late style
emerged in Western art and literary criticism in the nineteenth century.
Its core idea is that the late works of great artists and writers tend to ex-
hibit certain distinct traits, although these traits have been described in
diverse and even contradictory terms. There is no exact corresponding
terminology in the Chinese critical tradition, but the notion that great
poets do not reach their creative peak until late in life has taken deep
roots since the late Northern Song. The view of Du’s late poems—those
he composed after he moved to Kuizhou 夔州 (present-day Fengjie 奉節
in Sichuan) in 766—as best representing his genius laid the foundation
4 Introduction
for a broader theory that is supposed to be applicable to all great writers.
This discourse on lateness provides the literary-critical framework within
which Wang’s acclaimed late poems and their reception are examined in
chapter 3.
The second backdrop is the entanglement of poetry with partisan
politics in the Song. The scale and intricacy of this entanglement were
unprecedented. Broadly speaking, the political use of poetry in the period
falls into two categories: intentional and interpretational. The first refers
to cases where poems were composed deliberately to make partisan state-
ments about specific contemporary affairs or characters. The second refers
to the use of poems with no apparent political import to incriminate their
authors. Of course, there is a gray area where the intention of the author
or the meaning of the poem is open to legitimately different interpreta-
tions. In chapter 5, I aim to expand and revise the received narratives
about the politicization of poetry in Wang’s time.
The last of the three backdrops is literati engagement with Bud
dhism in the Song. This is a subject that has generated an enormous
amount of scholarship. We now have a much better appreciation of the
depth and scope of the influence of Buddhism—especially its Chan vari-
ant—on the lives and thoughts of Song littérateurs. Again, Wang’s case
is quite representative in terms of his interactions with Buddhist monks,
his ideological open-mindedness toward Buddhist doctrines, his exten-
sive, sometimes eccentric, exegeses of Buddhist sutras, and, most import-
ant from our perspective, his incorporation of Buddhist themes, idioms,
and mood in his poetry. Great strides have been made over recent decades
toward understanding Wang’s connections with Buddhism.5 My goal in
chapter 4 is limited to highlighting two aspects of Wang’s poetic Bud-
dhism that have attracted little scholarly attention so far: his role in es-
tablishing a minor tradition in a particular type of religious verse and his
use of a particular form of repetition in many of his Buddhist or qua-
si-Buddhist poems.
5. Xu Wenming’s Churu zizai is highly readable. Two monographs appeared re-
cently: Gong Bo, Fojia huaibao juwei chanyue; Liu Yang, Wang Anshi shizuo yu fochan
zhi guanxi yanjiu. Excellent chapters can be found in Wang Jinguang, Wang Anshi lungao,
37–58; Li Chenggui, Rushi shiyu zhong de fojiao, 50–109; Zhang Yu, Xinxing yu shichan,
153–278.
Introduction 5
There is a staggering volume of scholarship in Chinese on Wang as a
statesman, thinker, and poet. A recent bibliographic compilation covering
the period from 1912 to 2014 runs to more than four hundred pages.6
Research in Western languages has been largely focused on various as-
pects and ramifications of Wang’s reform policies and his moral-political
thought.7 Publications on his poetry are sparse at best; the only book-
length study so far is a doctoral dissertation in the “life and works” mode,
although it includes a good number of well-executed and well-annotated
translations.8 The present book is conceived of largely as a series of case
studies. The chapters may be read independently of each other, but to-
gether they form a varied (if only partial) mosaic of Wang’s work and its
critical receptions in the context of Song poetic culture. Chronology
serves as a general organizing principle of my presentation, although the
book is not biographical in nature, with information about Wang’s official
and personal life provided only when necessary to contextualize the issues
under discussion.9 Various periodizations of Wang’s poetry have been
proposed. I use a bipartite division, with his retirement in 1076 as the
watershed. The first two chapters deal with materials from Wang’s earlier
career; the following three turn to his late works.
6. Zhang Baojian and Gao Qingqing, Wang Anshi yanjiu lunzhu mulu suoyin. This
massive (but not exhaustive) compilation includes MA theses and PhD dissertations, as
well as works that feature discussion of Wang but are not devoted to him. It also includes
some non-Chinese titles.
7. James T. C. Liu’s Reform in Sung China (1959) is a scholarly landmark in English.
Peter Bol has written extensively on Wang; other significant studies include those by
Paul J. Smith and Ari Daniel Levine. For a brief (and incomplete) survey of Western
scholarship on Wang’s political legacy, see Zhang Chengzhong, “Jin sanbai nian.” For a
small collection of translations of Wang’s political writings and judgments of him by
both contemporary and later writers, see Meskill, Wang Anshi.
8. Pease, “From the Wellsweep to the Shallow Skiff.” For a brief introduction to
Wang’s poetic career, see Egan, “Wang Anshi.” In addition to Pease’s work, English
translations of Wang’s poems are scattered among anthologies and other works. Hinton’s
The Late Poems of Wang An-shih contains a fairly extensive selection but often takes too
much liberty with the original. The translation by Walls and Walls in Bird Tracks in the Air
strikes a fine balance between accuracy and elegance.
9. For biographical accounts of Wang in English, see Williamson, Wang An Shih;
Pease, “From the Wellsweep to the Shallow Skiff.”
