CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Problem
Writing is one of the four English basic skills beside listening, speaking and
reading. It is a process where the writer transfers her/his idea and feeling through
sentences and makes it understandable by the reader. As one of four basic skills, writing
is an essential aspect that should be mastered by the students. It is very important because
many aspects are needed to write in English.
Writing is not only the activity where the students put their idea and feeling into
written text but also organize them well and makes the reader understand about that text.
Because of that, writing is often assumed as a difficult skill to be mastered. In addition,
the students should refers to all components of writing such as content, organization,
language use, vocabulary, and mechanic in order to produce good writing at the end of
learning1.
Based on the observation was held at students Islamic studies in Mei 03, 2016, we
found little the student’s problems in writing. They just make some mistakes in
punctuation and to be. We thought they are smart and diligent enough, it can be proved
through the short paragraph that had done by them. Seem from them have new
vocabularies for their grade. Beside practice, the students also do the steps of writing
before they start to write. In addition, they refer to the all components of writing such as
content, organization, language use, vocabulary and mechanic.
Based on those explanations, we analyzed this skill at students Islamic studies and
conducted the research on title “An Analysis of Writing Components in Students
Islamic Studies”.
B. Identification of the Problem
Based on the observation that we have done, we found little student’s problem in
writing. Some mistakes happen in punctuation and grammar. But they have writing skill
and smart enough to write the short paragraph.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
A. The Concept of Writing
1. Definition of Writing
Based on the thesis that written by Nensi Safitri (2015), she adopted from
Harmer’s book (1998: 79) writing is a basic language skill besides speaking, listening,
and reading. Writing is the way to express thought, ideas, and information into written
text. It is not only how to put word by word into text, organize them well, but also
makes it understandable. That is why writing is important and should be mastered by
the students. They need to know how to state their idea, how to organize them well and
make it readable.
Writing is also a productive skill where the students should have a product at
the end of learning. To have good writing, the students should do some ways and more
practice because writing is not an instant thing to do. The students have to refer to all
components of writing such as content, organization, language use, vocabulary and
mechanic in order to get good writing2.
In our conclusion, writing is the way of someone expresses the feelings, ideas
on their mind in written text. It is an activity where the writer has to read first, thinking
deeply, and then put it into written text, organize them well and makes it
understandable. By writing, someone can share knowledge, expression, opinion, idea,
and feeling to the reader.
2. Components of Writing
According the Nensi thesis that based on Jacob’s book (1981: 90), there are
five components in writing. These are content, organization, vocabulary, language use
and mechanics3.
a. Content is substance of a text. There are four descriptors for content. They are
knowledgeable, substantive, through development of thesis, relevant to assigned
topic.
b. Organization related to the appropriate sequence of events or chronological order
of an event in a text and appropriate length. There are six descriptors of

organization are fluent expression, ideas clearly stated/supported, succinct, well
organized, logical sequencing, cohesive.
c. Language use consists of eight descriptors in writing evaluation; effective
complex construction, agreement, tenses, number, word order/function, articles,
pronouns and preposition.
d. Vocabulary, in writing, the writer should choose the appropriate vocabulary and
based on the level. Someone cannot write anything without vocabulary. So,
vocabulary is important aspect in writing. Vocabulary consists of four descriptors;
sophisticated range, effective word/idiom choice and usage, word form mastery,
appropriate register.
e. Mechanics is related to spelling, punctuating, capitalization, paragraphing and
hand writing in written product.
Finally, there are five basic components should be present when writing. First
is content. It is about knowledgeable, substantive, through development of thesis,
relevant to assigned topic. Second is organization. It means that good writing should
has good organizing and every sentence should coherence and unity. Third is language
use. It is about tenses, number, agreement, pronouns, preposition in writing. In another
word, language is the appropriate language should use when writing. Fourth is
vocabulary. It is about the selection of appropriate language put on the paper. The last
is mechanic. It is about spelling, punctuating, capitalization and paragraphing.
3. The Process of Writing
Based on our observation in Mei 3, 2015, the process of writing that we asked
based on our instructions without the formal process. In fact we asked the students to
write a short paragraph about their family, and we do assessment about their writing.
According the thesis that written by Aan Harinto, He adopted of Jacob’s book
(in sara 2002: 116) states that there are five components when assessing writing. These
are content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanics4.

no organization, not enough to
evaluate

number, word order/function,
articles, pronouns, prepositions but
meaning seldom obscured
17-11 Fair to poor: major problems in
simple/complex construction,
frequent errors of negation,

sentence construction rules,
dominated by errors, does not
communicate, not enough to
evaluate
Mechanics 5 Excellent to very good:
demonstrates mastery of
conventions, few errors of spelling,
punctuating, capitalization,
paragraphing
4 Good to average: occasional errors
of spelling, punctuation,
capitalization, paragraphing but
meaning not obscured
3 Fair to poor: frequent errors of
spelling, punctuation, capitalization,

So, whether the product of writing that the students produce is good or not, it
should be assessed and refers to all components of writing itself.
