[1] So much has changed since the start of the 21st century that it is difficult to keep up,
particularly with technology. In 1986, the Macintosh computer was just a baby, Google was not
yet known, and DVDs were still something for the future. In fact, if you were reading this article
in the 1980s, you would probably have done so on printed paper rather than a screen on your
tablet or smartphone. In 2006, Facebook was still new, Twitter had just been launched, and
very few of us knew what an iPhone was. Drones were already flying high in the sky, but the job
of drone delivery operator (the drone pilot or driver) has only existed for a few years. [2]
Different technologies have transformed our lives and the ways in which we communicate with
each other, and they have had a huge impact on business and our careers. The birth of the
internet provided us with an instant source of knowledge and information, which has gone on
to create its own industry and new technologies. The arrival of smartphones saw an incredible
demand for apps (computer programs or software applications), from around 1.5 million in
2015 to nearly 10 million in 2020, and the need for more and more app developers is relentless.
[3] Nowadays the internet is an essential feature for all businesses, big and small. Because
social media and online marketing are now so important, a large number of completely new job
roles have been created. Research suggests that 65% of children starting school today will end
up working in a job that does not currently exist. Careers such as social media manager (the
person who manages a company’s Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media
accounts) or chief listening officer (someone who ‘listens to’ a company’s social media
communications with its customers) are becoming increasingly popular. [4] But alongside
changes in technology, there have been significant changes in our lifestyles and attitudes to our
health. These changes have brought about other new jobs relating to fitness and nutrition. One
such example is the global trend in Latin fitness dancing, with the result that Zumba® instructor
has been recognised as a career for both women and men. Similarly, the interest in ‘clean’
eating, and publications by high profile food bloggers have seen more and more people
following careers as online nutritionists and wellbeing experts. [5] Changing attitudes have also
led to the creation of many more careers relating to the environment, such as offshore wind
farm engineer, whose role is to construct wind turbines to provide an alternative energy
source. Another relatively new career area involves helping companies to reduce their impact
on the environment by using natural resources more responsibly. A sustainability director does
exactly that, and is responsible for a company’s carbon footprint, as well as coming up with
sustainable ways for the company to be more eco-friendly. [6] If we could jump 20 or 30 years
into the future, we would come across any number of jobs that have not yet been dreamt of.
These will have become necessary not only due to advances in technology and innovation, but
also in response to the constantly changing world we are living in and the demands humanity
places on our planet.

Seven steps to becoming a cosmetic scientist
[1] You could start your own company, or work for a family member who has
started one, but this is not how most people get into the cosmetic science
industry. If you are following the traditional path, you should get a four-year
degree from a college or university. The most common degrees that cosmetic
scientists get are Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology or Microbiology. You
also find a few Physics degrees too.
[2] While a four-year degree is all you need, larger companies tend to favour
students who have Master's or PhD degrees in Cosmetic Science. The truth is that
most of these degrees do not help make you a better cosmetic scientist. The
training you receive on the job is much more valuable, except for when you enrol
in one of the few cosmetic-science focused programmes in universities.
[3] There are literally thousands of scientists and chemists working in the
cosmetics industry. Fortunately, the number of jobs continues to grow. This is an
industry that continues to sell its products, even in uncertain economic times.
Everyone wants to look good, no matter how much money they are making.
There are various types of companies that employ cosmetic scientists and
chemists. A great place to find potential employers is through online trade
magazines. [4] In college, you are rarely told what kind of job you might get when
you graduate. If you are looking to work as a scientist in the cosmetics industry,
there is a wide variety of jobs to choose from – for example, a formulator who
invents and creates cosmetics, or a synthesis chemist for those who enjoy organic
chemistry.
[5] To actually get a job, the first thing you are going to want to do is put together
your CV. You should be working on this in the early part of your final year at
university, even though you may have produced one while at school. The sooner
you have a CV, the sooner you can start sending it to human resources (HR)
departments. You can go the old-fashioned route of looking through
advertisements in industry magazines and journals or in university careers offices,
but you can also use the internet and search many different job or company
websites.
[6] Sometimes you will not be able to find your perfect job right out of university.
Large companies often accept people who worked for them first as temporary
workers during their school years. Get your CV to a scientist-focused temp agency
and see if you can land your first assignment.
[7] Perhaps the most powerful way to get a job in the cosmetics industry is to get
involved with social networking sites. Everyone should create a LinkedIn page.
This is where professionals hang out and post their career information. But it is
even better because you can strike up relationships with people all over the
industry of which you want to become part. Another great resource is Facebook.
People often list the names of the companies they work for and the jobs they do.

Q.JUAN SALINAS: SKATEPARK DESIGNER
My job involves two things I love: skateboarding and architecture. I started
skateboarding when I was seven. Every day after school, I would skate around the
square in front of my apartment block. On my ninth birthday, I was taken to a
skatepark for the first time. I found it incredibly exciting and became a regular
visitor to skateparks. I began to think about how they’re planned and built at the
age of 14, and only a couple of years later, at 17, my first very own skatepark
came into being. My town had two old skateparks: one behind my secondary
school and another larger one near the central food market. Me and my friends
were always looking for good new places to skate, though, and one we
particularly liked was under a road bridge. There was a paved path with some
great little slopes and turns down there, but it was all rather rough. I drew some
plans of how I thought it could be turned into a small skatepark and took them to
the local council. Amazingly, they liked the idea and had it built, based on my
drawings. It’s still used, actually. The whole thing – the ramps, the - at area, the
bowl, the steps – is made of concrete, which is still my material of choice. I went
on to study architecture, and I’ve been a quali ed architect for over ten years now.
Although I specialise in skateparks, I’ve also designed houses, shopping malls and
sports centres, and that experience has been valuable to me. I sometimes include
non-skateboarding facilities, like basketball courts or climbing walls, in my
skateparks. In fact, I’ve become quite famous among skateboarders for doing
that. Being a skateboarder myself, I understand what other skaters want and
seeing them having great fun using something I designed is cooler than anything
else I can imagine. There are two main approaches to skatepark design. One,
known as street plaza, is based on common elements of an urban landscape,
like - at surfaces, steps, small walls, benches. Then there’s a more natural-looking
style where skaters - ow – that’s the word they use – across a variety of ramps
and other curved shapes. Many skateparks combine elements of the two styles.
That, together with basing overall plans on the natural local landscape, is
something you see in lots of the skateparks I’m responsible for. People often ask
me where my inspiration comes from. It varies, but something that is widely
recognised as part of the Juan Salinas style is my use of colours on ramps and
other structures, and that’s inspired by trees, bushes and - flowers I see around
me. Also, last month, I created a special ramp for an existing skatepark, and that
was inspired by the shape of a big ocean wave I saw. When I started
skateboarding, it was a minority interest in many parts of the world, but it’s now
so well established that it’s recently gained approval as an Olympic sport.
However, lots of skateboarders are concerned that this new development will
bring too many rules into the sport. I share their feelings. On the other hand, the
publicity the Olympics will bring is likely to increase the number of people
wanting to take up skateboarding, and that means more skateparks will be
needed.

Running across Australia What’s it like to run a marathon – 42.2 kilometres? Probably impossible for
many people. In 2022, however, Erchana Murray-Bartlett ran 150 marathons in 150 days. In doing so,
the 32-year-old Australian ran a total of 6330 kilometres from the far north of Australia to Melbourne in
the far south. In completing this challenge, Erchana managed to raise over 100000 Australian dollars for
an environmental charity, though the idea of doing the run first came when she was looking for a way to
highlight the crisis facing wildlife. ‘500 Australian species are endangered,’ Erchana says, ‘and we need
urgent action.’ Erchana describes meeting conservation groups in different places as among her best
memories from the run. Erchana faced many difficulties as she crossed Australia: deserts, jungles,
thunderstorms and 35°C heat. She was naturally very worried about crocodiles, snakes and deadly
spiders, and was constantly bitten by ants and mosquitoes. Being chased by a wild bull on one occasion
was the most frightening thing that happened to her, though it did give her a good story to tell when
visiting schools on her route. Those visits were ‘probably the most enjoyable things I did as I crossed the
country, along with getting to know local communities’, she says. ‘I always ran in the morning so I had
time for other stuff in the afternoon.’ To give her the energy she needed, Erchana had five big meals
daily, as well as regular snacks. Besides eating healthy food like salad and fruit, she treated herself to a
large helping of ice-cream at the end of each day – she would often imagine herself enjoying the cold
sweetness of it when she was halfway through a marathon. Lots of pasta and pizza in particular helped
keep her weight up. Although her support team followed her in a camper van, she mostly ran alone, and
she admits to getting lonely and often wanting to quit. As time went on, though, whenever the wrong
kind of ideas entered her mind she didn’t fight them – they went away faster like that. She tried listening
to music but found it didn’t help much. In the final weeks of her journey, Erchana attracted lots of media
attention and people started to join her daily runs, which she welcomed. They liked talking about the
distances she had run and reminding her of how close she was to the end, but the key benefit was that
they distracted her from the pain in her feet. When she finally crossed the finishing line in Melbourne,
about five months after starting, her priority was putting her feet up for a long time. ‘That really felt
fantastic,’ she says. ‘One of the nicest things I’ve ever done.’

Reaction videos
Even if you’re not sure what reaction videos are, you’ve probably seen them. Millions of these videos
can be found online, showing people’s emotional reactions to something they’re looking at. There are
specific online channels, some with over 20 million subscribers, which are devoted to nothing but
reaction videos. These videos have become extremely popular worldwide partly because they can be
very entertaining. In fact, they’re so popular that many internet users worry they’re missing out on
something if they don’t watch them – so they find them and watch them. To make a reaction video, you
film yourself watching and talking about a video you’ve found online. You then upload what you’ve
filmed so other people can watch your reactions and leave comments. People make reaction videos
about TV shows, scenes from movies, sports events, old news stories and many other things, but I
mostly do first-time reactions to music videos. For anyone thinking of making one of these videos, that
last point is important. Always react to something you’ve never seen before, otherwise it won’t have
much of an impact. And, whatever you’re looking at or listening to, be completely natural in the way you
react. If you can be true to yourself, many viewers will think: ‘that’s how I feel too’. They want to feel a
connection with someone else and they hope to achieve that as they observe someone reacting to
something. Viewers also are often looking for help in forming an opinion about something, and on the
internet, of course, there are plenty of opinions on anything and everything. I first got interested in
reaction videos when I came across some made by two 18-year-old girls from Jamaica. They were
reacting to music from Southeast Asia, which I knew nothing about. I still like watching those girls’
videos, partly because it’s a great way of learning something new, which is a very common reason to
follow reaction videos. One thing about those two girls is that they always enjoy themselves, and it’s
great to see. So, you should have fun as you’re recording if you want to build a group of people who
regularly watch your reaction videos. There must be thousands of people around the world now making
reaction videos, so it’s quite a competitive market. Reaction-video makers with many regular viewers
attract advertising, and they make money out of it. I already have an established following, but if I was
considering entering that market for the first time and wanted a big, regular audience, I would do two
things. Firstly, I would select one specific subject to focus on. Those Jamaican girls, for example, went for
Southeast Asian music. I would also invite comments from viewers as this sort of feedback will help you
make successful videos that people want to watch.
