About IFLA www.ifla.org

IFLA (The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) is the lead-
ing international body representing the interests of library and information services and
their users. It is the global voice of the library and information profession.

IFLA provides information specialists throughout the world with a forum for exchanging
ideas and promoting international cooperation, research, and development in all fields
of library activity and information service. IFLA is one of the means through which
libraries, information centres, and information professionals worldwide can formulate
their goals, exert their influence as a group, protect their interest s, and find solutions to
global problems.

IFLA’s aims, objectives, and professional programme can only be fulfilled with the co-
operation and active involvement of its members and affiliates. Currently, approximately
1,600 associations, institutions and individuals, from widely divergent cultural back-
grounds, are working together to further the goals of the Federation and to promote
librarianship on a global level. Through its formal membership, IFLA directly or indirectly
represents some 500,000 library and information professionals worldwide.

IFLA pursues its aims through a variety of channels, including the publication of a major
journal, as well as guidelines, reports and monographs on a wide range of topics. IFLA
organizes workshops and seminars around the world to enhance professional practice
and increase awareness of the growing importance of libraries in the digital age. All this
is done in collaboration with a number of other non-governmental organizations, funding
bodies and international agencies such as UNESCO and WIPO. IFLANET, the Federa-
tion’s website, is a prime source of information about IFLA, it s policies and activities:
www.ifla.org

Library and information professionals gather annually at the IFLA World Library and
Information Congress, held in August each year in cities around the world.

IFLA was founded in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1927 at an international conference of

national library directors. IFLA was registered in the Netherlands in 1971. The Konink-
lijke Bibliotheek (Royal Library), the national library of the Netherlands, in The Hague,
generously provides the facilities for our headquarters. Regional of fices are located in
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Pretoria, South Africa; and Singapore.

Preface
After two unsuccessful attempts made by IFLA’s Education and Training Section in
2001 and 2004, finally, K. G. Saur Verlag with the help of Sjoerd Koopman, IFLA
Cordinator of Professional activities was able to publish the 3rd edition of the World
Guide to Library, Archive and Information Science Education. We would like to
express our thanks and gratitude to Axel Schniederjürgen of K. G. Saur Verlag for
his expertise and hard work in the preparation of this book.
The update of this reference work has been made possible thanks to the co-operation
and contributions of numerous institutions and individuals all over the world. We
wish to thank all those not named individually who have supported the project by
investigating, collecting and providing information regarding the situation of Library,
Archive and Information Science education in their countries or beyond.
Our special appreciation is owed to Pan Yantao and her colleagues at Sun Yat-Sen
University, Guangzhou, for taking over the update of all Mainland China records as
well as distributing and collecting questionnaires and replies in their country.
Leif Kajberg (Royal School of Library and Information Science, Denmark) and
Chihfeng P. Lin (Shih-Hsin University, Taiwan) were able to help with useful contact
information in different countries.
We wish to record that other important bits of information have been provided by
Anna Maria Tammaro (University of Parma, Italy), Cristóbal Urbano (University of
Barcelona, Spain), Elizabet de Carvalho (IFLA Regional Office for Latin America
and the Caribbean in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Christopher S. G. Khoo (Nanyang
Technological University, Singapore), just to mention a few examples.
Resource material from Ian Johnson (Aberdeen Business School, United Kingdom)1
and Viviana Quiñones (Centre national du livre pour enfants, France)2 regarding the
situation in Latin America and Francophone Africa proved to be very useful. An-
other informative contribution has been published by Lourdes González and Marta
Massegur (University of Barcelona)3 .
Finally, we hope that under the guidance and leadership of K. G. Saur Verlag this
book will continue to be revised and published on a regular basis.

Arrangement of Guide
This Guide lists education institutions world-wide where professional education and
training programmes in the field of Library, Archive and Information Science are
carried out at a tertiary level of education or higher.
It is arranged by name of country in alphabetical order. The country names are given
in the general English form.
The profile for each institution is standardized according to the essential information
relating to the objectives of the project. The information is broken down into two
basic categories:
I. Information on the institution itself and
II. Information on the programme(s) offered.

I. Information on the Institution

The entries for the individual library, archive and information science education insti-
tutions are arranged first in geographical order, i.e. by city names, then alphabetically
by institution names, and numbered consecutively.
Number. The identifying number for each institution, which is used in the indexes.
Name. Whenever available, institutions are listed under the name in the original
language (sometimes transliterated version), with English translation in parenthe-
sis, where applicable. The names start with the most general unit (e.g. University,
Faculty, School, Department, etc.).
Address. The current address is given with the English version of the place name in
capital letters. Telephone and fax numbers, e-mail and URL addresses are provided,
whenever available.
Head. The name of the person in charge of the institution or programme is given.
If available, the title of the position is added in English or the original version (such
as, Chairman, Director, Dean, Directeur, President, etc.). In accordance with IFLA
practice, academic degrees or other professional designations have been omitted.
Founded. The year of founding of the institution is given.
Administrative Structure. This category declares, whether the institution is an
independent institution or affiliated with another institution, such as a university,
a government body, a library, etc. There is a great variety in the administrative
structure due to existing governmental policies and educational programmes.
Source of Finance. Information on the main sources of financial support, such as
government, student tuition, etc., if possible in percentage figures, if from more than
one source.
Tuition Rate. Tuition costs in the local currency are given, whenever available.
The currency symbols used were provided by ISO and the chart appears at the end
of the book.

9
Arrangement of Guide

English translation in parenthesis, whenever applicable.

Note regarding the use of the asterisk *

Every effort has been made to update institutions and programmes. Only those en-
tries that we were able to confirm through our research are listed in this Guide. How-
ever, some data was taken over from the previous edition of the Guide in order to
provide an ample overview. These information details that could not be verified or
updated are marked with *.

Note regarding the country heading "China":

IFLA adheres to the principle of one China. The names of the institutions are listed
as they have been submitted. However, the names of Taiwan institutions containing
the word "national" do not have the recognition of the China Society of Library
Science (CSLS), the only authorized IFLA Association Member in China.
