The historical dictionaries present essential information on a broad range
of subjects, including American and world history, art, business, cities,
countries, cultures, customs, film, global conflicts, international relations,
literature, music, philosophy, religion, sports, and theater. Written by
experts, all contain highly informative introductory essays of the topic and
detailed chronologies that, in some cases, cover vast historical time periods
but still manage to heavily feature more recent events.
Brief A–Z entries describe the main people, events, politics, social issues,
institutions, and policies that make the topic unique, and entries are cross-
referenced for ease of browsing. Extensive bibliographies are divided into
several general subject areas, providing excellent access points for
students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more. Additionally,
maps, photographs, and appendixes of supplemental information aid high
school and college students doing term papers or introductory research
projects. In short, the historical dictionaries are the perfect starting point
for anyone looking to research in these fields.

Editor’s Foreword
Much has happened in Nigeria since the publication of the previous edition
of this historical dictionary in 2009, and it is our pleasure to have the
opportunity to update its contents to reflect current affairs in the country,
new interpretations of historical actors and events, and new realities
concerning Nigeria’s international political, economic, social, and cultural
relations with the world at large. With its growing population (estimated at
over 180 million now), slowly but surely developing economy, and long
period of relatively stable civilian leadership, Nigeria is increasingly taking a
place as a recognized leader in the world community. No doubt, the
country still has its problems and faces many daunting challenges, but its
importance in continental and global affairs is only likely to grow. The new
edition of this dictionary is designed to bring readers up to date with these
developments.
Since 2009, Nigeria’s Fourth Republic has maintained, even deepened,
its democratic credentials, punctuated by the election of Muhammadu
Buhari to the presidency as an opposition candidate in 2015, marking the
first time in Nigeria’s history that power was transferred between opposing
political parties. Nigeria’s economy has become the largest in Africa in
terms of gross domestic product, even as a majority of Nigerian citizens
continue to live in poverty. The decline in global oil prices since 2014
plunged Nigeria into its worst recession since the 1980s in 2016. New
developments in the Niger Delta crisis have taken place, including an
amnesty deal launched in 2009 and multiple court cases in international
courts surrounding the activities of multinational petroleum companies.
And, of course, most notably and tragically, the emergence of the Islamist
terrorist group Boko Haram in northern Nigeria since 2009 has become a
major security threat, with more than 20,000 killed and two million
displaced as of 2017. All of these issues are incorporated into this new
edition of the dictionary.
Internationally, Nigeria’s relationships with standard allies such as
regional neighbors, the United Kingdom, and the United States have
remained solid, but the growth in diplomatic and economic ties to the
People’s Republic of China have strengthened significantly, meriting the
inclusion of China in this edition as well as a reanalysis of other entries
related to Nigeria’s foreign and trade relations. In addition, this edition has
added many new entries related to long-standing issues in Nigerian society
but which have become significantly more pronounced in the last decade.
Issues related to the environment and resource maintenance, as well as
the increasing role played by a variety of international nongovernmental
organizations in Nigeria, have been included. A variety of new entries
related to the arts, music, dance, and cultural events and activities have
also been added.
We would like to thank the editorial team at Rowman & Littlefield for
providing us the opportunity to update this historical dictionary and for
ushering it through publication. Thanks to Emily Harmon for making the
map of Nigerian states. To all the friends, family, and colleagues who
supported us in the process, you have our sincere gratitude as well.
