Introduction

In the Practice Makes Perfect series of German books, the books are
designed around a specific grammatical or structural topic. This book,
however, is designed to provide linguistic scenarios that reinforce
conversational language. Grammar and vocabulary are of course used in all
foreign-language books and therefore appear in this book as well. However,
the main goal here is to develop conversational skills in German, not just to
practice grammatical structures and vocabulary.

How to use this book

Each chapter begins with a dialogue on a topic that is the basis for the
content of the chapter. The dialogues are relatively short and are written in
natural language appropriate for intermediate readers. Following each
dialogue is a series of questions that check for a basic understanding of the
dialogue and competence with new, important conversational structures.
New to this premium second edition, recordings of all of the dialogs in
the book are available as streaming audio through the McGraw-Hill
Education Language Lab app. In addition, the answers of many of the
exercises in this book have also been recorded.
Although lists of words and phrases are provided, they are not composed
of random words and phrases but rather of terms that are linked to the topic
of the chapter. Then the words and phrases are introduced again, but this
time in complete sentences appropriate for a conversation on the topic of
the chapter.
Numerous exercises are provided to give detailed practice with the new
words and phrases. Some of the exercises repeat an important grammatical
concept and simultaneously use that concept as a vehicle for manipulation
of the new conversational material. Other exercises check for
comprehension or the ability to use new words in a useful phrase.
The reader should not forget that this book practices conversational
German. Therefore, it is important that every German word and phrase be
pronounced out loud. Conversations, in any language, are not merely silent
thoughts in one’s head. They are spoken entities. When working with the
introductory dialogues, say each line out loud, and you cannot say them
smoothly, practice them until you can say them with ease. And, of course,
always think about the meaning of each line. Readers have to know what
they are talking about.
Read all the lists of words, phrases, and sentences out loud as well and,
again, practice them until you can say them smoothly. Do the same for the
exercises. Write down the answers to the exercises, but don’t stop there.
Read the exercise aloud and then practice reading your answers aloud until
you can say them easily and naturally.
At the end of the book there is an Answer key. Be sure to check your
answers againt the Answer key before practicing saying them out loud.

German alphabet and pronunciation

German, like English and many other European languages, is written using
the Latin alphabet. Use the following descriptions of German letters and
their pronunciations to guide you through this book. When in doubt about
how to pronounce a word, ask a German-speaking friend or consult a
dictionary.
Special letters
An umlaut is two dots that can be placed over any of three vowels to alter
their pronunciation. These vowels are Ää, Öö, and Üü. In addition, there is
a special letter, called ess-tset, which is a combination of the earlier forms
of s and z and looks like this: ß.
The vowel Ää is pronounced very much like the German Ee. The vowel
Öö sounds something like the English sound er in the word her, but with the
r muted. The sound of the vowel Üü is made by pursing your lips to say oo
while pronouncing ee with the rest of your mouth. Note that the vowel Yy
is pronounced in much the same way as Üü.
The sound of ß is identical to the double s sound in English. For
example:

Now let’s look at certain letter combinations that have their own unique
sounds.

Some consonants are voiced; in other words, a sound is made in the

throat when the consonant is pronounced. The voiced consonants are b, d,
and g. When voiced consonants appear at the end of a word, they change to
their voiceless counterparts. The voiceless consonants are p, t, and k.
Speaking a new language is not an insurmountable task. It just takes
consistent effort and practice. If you work at your own comfortable pace,
your goals for learning German will be achieved in time and with practice.
Practice makes perfect. Arbeit macht den Meister.
Greetings and introductions

Conversation: In der Hauptstraße (On

Main Street)
Just like English speakers, Germans have a variety of ways of greeting one
another. Consider the greetings used in the following dialogue.
Based upon the dialogue In der Hauptstraße, supply a
logical response to each statement or question.

1. Wie geht es Erik?

2. Es geht mir gut. Und dir?

3. Ich hole meine Cousine ab.

Wie geht’s?
When asking how someone is, use the phrase Wie geht’s? But remember
that this expression is used informally. The formal phrase is Wie geht es
Ihnen? Let’s look at how variations of this phrase are used in a few
different sentences. Always read each line out loud.
Depending upon how someone feels, there are different ways of
responding to Wie geht’s? For example:

You can also ask more specifically about someone’s health. Again, there
is more than one way to respond.

Guten Tag!
In the dialogue, Erik said hello by using the phrase Guten Tag! Those
words literally mean good day. Depending on the time of day, the way you
say hello can change, but no matter the form, they can all mean hello. For
example:

The phrase Gute Nacht, or good night, is usually said when you are
leaving the person with whom you are speaking and it is nighttime, or when
going to bed.
There is a variety of expressions used for saying good-bye.

Just like English speakers, Germans have a few casual ways of saying
good-bye.

Du
If you have an informal relationship with someone, you can address him or
her with du. There is a verb that describes this informal relationship: duzen
(to say du to one another).

Sie
If a relationship is formal, you address someone with Sie. The verb that
describes this relationship is siezen (to say Sie to one another).

Sein and werden

You are probably aware that the verbs sein (to be) and werden (to
become/shall/will) are high-frequency verbs and have numerous uses in
German.

Let’s review the present-tense conjugations of sein and werden.
