Acknowledgments
This book is a collaboration that goes beyond its two co-authors. In
so many ways, writing this book was not a pristine, solitary act but,
instead, an embedded process. As we wrote, we thought through ideas
by and with other academics, activists, artists, friends, family, and stu-
dents. We wrote and thought together on- and offline while we collabo-
rated with our families and friends on other life-tasks. We shared ideas
and had ideas while we showered, washed dishes, played with our chil-
dren, or held our babies. We listened to news stories and read commen-
taries. We travelled, we gave talks, we published, and we discussed. In
the following, we name but a few of the people who made this book
possible and of the institutions that supported us during the process of
writing it.
Awkward Politics is part of a larger project – “Technologies of Pop-
feminist Activism” – funded by an Insight Grant from the Social Sci-
ences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). We thank
the anonymous reviewers of the proposal as well as the committee
members who recommended that our project be supported. The grant
supported us throughout the research phase of this book, including
fieldwork in Germany, conference travel, and graduate and technical
assistance, all essential to making Awkward Politics what it is now. We
also thank the numerous research assistants and technical support staff
who have helped us along the way: Ruslan Bergenov, Mary Catherine
Lawler, Daria Polianska, Lars Richter, Kay Rollans, and Emma Tun-
ney as well as Clare Peters and Kamal Ranaweera. Very special and
heart-felt thanks goes out to Olena Hlazkova, our research assistant
who has been with the project since its very inception, reading drafts
of the project proposal, collecting research on Pussy Riot and Femen in

particular, translating texts from Russian and Ukrainian into English,
compiling our bibliography, and assisting in other related projects.
Without her dedicated collaboration with us, this book would not have
been possible.
In the process of conceiving of Awkward Politics, we have also com-
municated and worked with many colleagues in North America and
Europe. An important component of this project was a digital lecture
series, co-organized with Christina Scharff, Hester Baer, and Pinar
Tuzcu. A special thanks goes to Beverly Weber, who engaged with,
tweeted about, and commented on our lectures. We also want to thank
all the contributors, the journal editors, and our issue co-editor Chris-
tina Scharff for the special issue of Feminist Media Studies. A special
thanks goes to Hester Baer and Alexandra M. Hill, co-editors of Ger-
man Women’s Writing in the 21st Century (Camden House, 2015), for
their insightful comments on our contribution to this volume – com-
ments that helped us to refine our arguments at a crucial stage in the
writing process. We also thank the co-editors of the Women in German
Yearbook, volume 30, for inviting us to contribute to the special section
“Provocations for the Future,” in which our thoughts on the academy
offered here germinated.
Awkward Politics was inspired by our opportunities to give talks at
various venues in Canada, the United States, Germany, and Ireland.
A special thanks goes to the organization Women in German, which
enabled our first meeting and the initial discussions that led to this proj-
ect. In the following years, we presented parts of this work at Women
in German conferences, discussed drafts during the conference, and
shared some of our ideas in the Women in German Yearbook. We also
had the opportunity to talk through some of our ideas on popfeminist
awkwardness with colleagues and students at the University of Bremen
(Germany), the University of Münster (Germany), Maynooth Univer-
sity (Ireland), Reed College and Portland State University (Portland,
Oregon), the Monnet Center for European Studies (Gainesville, Flor-
ida), and at our home institutions in Edmonton (Alberta) and Knoxville
(Tennessee). In conjunction with these invited talks and other collabo-
rations, we thank the following people: Katja Garloff, Harrell Fletcher,
Valerie Heffernan, Britta Herrmann, Marion Schulz, and Michael
Thomas Taylor. We thank our colleagues and students at all these insti-
tutions and places for their interest, input, and support!
Further, we especially thank Reyhan ĝahin for her input and enthu-
siasm – and really, for getting this whole thing started, for it was her
Acknowledgments xiii
work that brought us together – as well as her willingness to join us
on future endeavours. We also thank Fiona Garden, epa, and Credo
film for sharing image rights with us; Ralf Schweimeier for being our
on-site photographer in Berlin; and Elysia Mann for related art. An
important thank you goes out to the team at McGill-Queen’s Univer-
sity Press. Thank you to Jacqueline Mason, who initially showed inter-
est in the project and whose enthusiasm and advice has been invaluable.
We thank you for the courage to support our work. We further thank
the three anonymous reviewers of the manuscript for their thoughtful
comments, careful reading, and positive responses. Finally, we thank
the rest of the editorial team at the press, including Ryan Van Huijstee,
managing editor; Joanne Richardson, copy editor; and others for seeing
this project through the publication process.
We thank our families who have supported us throughout this work,
at home and in our travels, and especially our partners, Doreen Prei and
Matthew Brown. Final thanks is reserved for the reader who is willing
to pick up this book, to think through the importance of feminism with
us, and to embrace our thoughts and methodologies.

riot. (Riot Grrrl Berlin on FB; spelling and grammar in original)
In August 2012, Canadian Berlin-based feminist punk musician Peaches
put out a call on the Facebook page of the group Riot Grrrl Berlin,
inviting all Pussy Riot supporters to join in creative action. Such imme-
diate Western cries of support for the then imprisoned members of
Pussy Riot were only possible because the group’s own protest actions;
the documentation of their arrest, ensuing trial, and imprisonment;
their songs and manifestos; and their image – dominated by the now-
ubiquitous colourful balaclavas – were geared towards transnational
digital dissemination. The very evening following Pussy Riot’s perfor-
mance in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, which led to the
