Last night, I watched a nature documentary on TV. It was
about Iceland. It showed the beautiful animals on the island
and the amazing whales and sharks in the ocean near it. The
photography was fantastic and I felt like I was in a fantasy
world. Well, it seems I was.
Chris Palmer produced nature documentaries for over
25 years, including the films Dolphins, Whales and Bears. During his career, he swam
in the ocean with sharks, came close to crocodiles and more. Then he wrote a book
about nature films and told the world their biggest secret: many events in these films
aren’t real.
For example, when you hear a bear in a river, the sound is often water in a sink. It’s
possible the bear is also an animal actor, and the filmmakers brought it to the river.
Palmer’s famous film, Whales, follows two whales travelling from Hawaii to Alaska.
But the trip never happened, and the whales in Alaska and the whales in Hawaii are
different whales.
The BBC also did things like this in their nature documentaries. In 2011,
they announced that a film of a polar bear and her babies was from a zoo
in the Netherlands and not from the Arctic. Many people were angry
about this, but it isn’t unusual. Nature filmmakers haven’t got much
time or money, and these methods help them. According to them,
they don’t hurt the animals and their films make people love
nature. Hopefully, this is true.
