KNI T TI NG PAT TERN
Every dedicated y sher across the globe, dreams about shing the legendary Mikkeli
pool in Altaelva. A dream, that in most cases, never comes true.

His Majesty of Norway, King Harald, has shed in Mikkeli annually since the early 90s.
I myself have been fortunate enough to have had several shing trips to Mikkeli.

The Mikkeli Sweater is an outdoor sweater that is excellent for y shing, but also for
other outdoor activities. It is worked bottom up, and has an a-lined shaped body.

It is important that you get pattern chart A to align with B.

Count the stitches carefully before you start, so it is centered.

Size guide and measurements

The measurements in this pattern is only correct if the given gauge is achieved.
The sweater should have a positive ease from 5 to 10 cm.

The sizes XXS (XS) S (M) L (XL) 2XL are intended to t a bust measurement of approx.
80-85 (85-90) 90-95 (95-100) 100-110 (110-120) 120-130 cm.

Measure yourself or the one your knitting for, to nd the perfect size.
If you’re 90 cm around your bust, you should knit a size S that measures 98 cm

Body
Cast on 160 (176) 192 (216) 232 (248) 264 sts with circular needle size 3.5 mm (US4) and
color A. Place a stitch marker around the 1st stitch, and around stitch no. 80 (88) 96 (108)
116 (124) 132 (right side). Join and work 4 cm ribbing (k2, p2).

Change to circular needle size 4.5 mm (US7) and knit stockinette stitch until garment
measures 35 (37) 39 (41) 42 (43) 44 cm, while you’re decreasing 2 sts in each side of the
body (1 sts on each side of the marker) a total of 4 sts per round every 7. (7.) 7. (8.) 8. (9.)
10. cm 4 times in total. 16 sts decreased in total. Decreasing illustration on the next page.

A little advice! I recommend that you work the pattern chart with needle size 5.0 mm
(US8), so the sweater does not become too tight at the top of the body and the sleeves.
You can use a needle size 4.5 mm (US7) if you knit loosely.

Work pattern chart A, and place 8 (8) 8 (12) 12 (14) 16 sts on a stitch holder in each side
of the sweater for armholes. Do this on the last round of the pattern chart.

Put garment aside, work sleeves.

Sleeves
Cast on 40 (40) 40 (44) 48 (48) 48 sts with double pointed needle size 3.5 mm (US4) and
color A (or loop sleeves if you prefer that). Place a stitch marker around the 1st stitch
(centered underarm sts). Join and work 4 cm ribbing (k2, p2).

Change to double pointed needle size 4.5 mm (US7) and knit stockinette stitch, while
increasing 2 sts centered under the sleeve every 6th round a total of 12 (12) 12 (12) 12
(14) 14 times. Check that you have 64 (64) 64 (68) 72 (76) 76 sts on your needle.

The sleeve should measure approx. 34 (34) 34 (34) 34 (39) 39 cm at this point.

Continue with stockinette stitch until sleeve measures 37 (39) 41 (43) 45 (47) 49 cm.
Knit 1 round while increasing 0 (0) 0 (4) 0 (4) 4 sts evenly on the round.

You should now have 64 (64) 64 (72) 72 (80) 80 sts on your needle.

Work pattern chart A, and place 8 (8) 8 (12) 12 (14) 16 sts on a stitch holder centered
under the sleeve for armholes. Do this on the last round of the pattern chart.

Work another sleeve the same way.

Round yoke
It’s time to transfer the sleeve stitches to the circular garment needle.

Transfer the stitches from the left arm to the circular needle, move the stitches from your
front pieces to the right needle, transfer the stitches from the right sleeve to the circular
needle, and lastly, move the stitches from your back piece to the right needle.

The 1st stitch on your left needle indicates where the round starts (behind left sleeve).
Place a stitch marker around this stitch, to make the next part easier for yourself.

You should have 240 (256) 272 (296) 312 (336) 344 sts on your needle now.

Work pattern chart B, and make sure it matches pattern chart A.

Decrease as shown and skip rounds for your size (note to the right of pattern chart).

When you’re done, you’ll have 90 (96) 102 (111) 117 (126) 129 sts on your needle.

Neck shaping
You can skip this part if you’re a beginner. I recommend that you try, because the result
will be so much better with a little bit of short rows in the neck.

Knit 1 round with color A, while decreasing 10 (14) 16 (17) 21 (26) 25 sts evenly on the
round. Knit 1 round of stockinette stitch without decreasing.

3
Time to make short rows to make a nicely looking neckline shaping.
Count the stitches to the middle back, and place a marker here.

Knit 12 sts past the marker, turn garment and make a turning stitch.
Purl 12 sts past the marker, turn garment and make a new turning stitch.

* Knit 6 sts past the last turning stitch, turn garment and make a turning stitch.
Purl 6 sts past the last turning stitch, turn garment and make a turning stitch. *

Repeat from * to * 1 more time, and knit to the marker.

Neckband
Change to circular needle size 3.5 mm (US4) and knit 1 round. You should now have
80 (82) 86 (94) 96 (100) 104 sts on your needle. Work 8 (8) 8 (10) 10 (12) 12 cm of ribbing
(k2, p2) and cast o all sts loosely. Fold the neckband in, and sew it loosely.

Finishing
Sew together under the arms with kitchener stitch, and weave in all ends on the wrong
side. Good luck with the project, and tight lines. Maybe we’ll meet on the river banks.

2 sts End: 144 (160) 176 (200) 216 (232) 248 sts 2 sts 28 (28) 28 (32) 32 (36) 40 cm
