THE LADY IN THE MIRROR

by Hershey Marie H. Abarri

(A self-description essay inspired by the topic “Me as I See Me”.)

In the mirror, a woman was standing exactly three paces from

me. She has the same black hair and dressed similarly like me. Her

eyes were of a Japanese and carried fiery passion inside. Then she

showed her naked body- full of stretch marks, of scars from the battles

she fought. Her long black hair falling over her shoulders like waterfall

in a virgin forest. She opened a book of history, scenarios from the

past she had long forgotten but left her stronger and wiser. “Once

upon a time a princess lost her tiara and was erased in the memories

of her people”, she told. As she continued to read, her tears came into

life, slowly running on her cheeks. “When life seems too tough for her,

her loved ones and friends disappeared like bubbles pricked by a

finger. Then she needed to survive on her own.” I saw that, when I

looked into her eyes, the forgiveness she bestowed to those who did

not ask for it. And the happiness in her heart that were blooming like

flowers and leaves sprang on a dead branch. She continued the story,

“She learned to chop fire woods from the fallen branches of a dead

tree nearby. She prepared breakfast, pinakbet and rice, on her own

and walked outside to plant love seeds for the future.” She smiled

humbly, wiping those tears which were about to dry through the thin
air passing by. On the last part of the story, “She watered the seeds

with patience and kindness. She gently sprinkled each plant with

fertilizer which soon produced beautiful flowers.” Her eyes were

smiling as she pushed herself to stood up and put the book back to its

place on the shelf. She clothed herself with self-love as she tied her

wrap dress on her waist. The touch of make-up brushed on her morena

face glowed it up and she wore her heels. I walked away from the

mirror, leaving the memories which pained me and brought those that

gave me joy. I smiled with red lips and closed the door.
