Each question has Four options [A], [B], [C] and [D]. ONE OR MORE THAN ONE of these four
options is(are) correct.

Q.1 A circular ring (centre O) of radius a, and of uniform cross–section is made up three different metallic rods
AB, BC and CA (jointed together at the points A, B, and C in pairs) of thermal conductivity 1, 2 and 3
respectively (see diagram). The junctions A, B and C are respectively maintained at the temperature 100°C,
50°C and 0°C respectively. All the rods are of equal length and cross-section. Under steady state
conditions, assume that no heat is lost from the sides of the rods. Let Q1, Q2 and Q3 be the rate of

which of the following is/are correct:
(A) The emissive power of B is 20 W/m2. (B) The emissive power of B is 200 W/m2
(C) The power emitted by B is 200 Watts (D) The emissivity of B is = 0.2

Q.4 An ideal monatomic gas expands in such a way that TV1/2 = constant, where T and V are the temperature

(A) The molar heat capacity is C = CV – 2R. (B) The internal energy of gas decreases.
(C) Temperature of gas decreases. (D) Pressure of gas increases.

Q.9 A thermally insulated piece of metal is heated under atmospheric pressure by an electric current so that it
receives electric energy at a constant power P. This leads to an increase of the absolute temperature T of the
metal with time t as given by the equation T(t) = T0 [1 + a (t – t0)]1/4. Here a, t0 and T0 are constants. The
4P
heat capacity of the metal is CP(T) = Tn (which is temperature dependent in the temperature range of
aT04
the experiment), then find the value of ‘n’.

Q.10 The emissivity of tungsten is approximately 0.35. A tungsten sphere 1 cm in radius is suspended within a
large evacuated enclosure whose walls are at 300 K. What power input is required to maintain the sphere at
a temperature of 3000 K if heat conduction along the supports is neglected? Express your answer in kW

after rounding off the integer. Take  =  10−8 S.I. units and  = 213/68.

Q.11 Consider a brass rod and a steel rod (80 cm longer than the brass rod) at 0°c. It is observed that on
increasing temperatures of the two rods by same amount difference in lengths of the two rods does not
change. Given that thermal coefficient of linear expansion for steel and brass are 11 × 10–6/°C and 19 × 10–
6/°C respectively. Find the sum of lengths (in meter) of the two rods at 0°C.

is TVx = constant then find the value of (3/2) x.

Q.13 A diatomic gas is heated at constant volume until the pressure is doubled and again heated at constant
pressure until volume is doubled. The average molar heat capacity for whole process is 19R/A. Find the
value of A

Q.14 There are two thin spheres A and B of the same material and same thickness. They emit like black bodies.
Radius of A is double that of B. A and B have same temperature T. When A and B are kept in a room of

of a. [Assume negligible heat exchange between A and B]

Q.15 A gas is suddenly expanded such that its final volume becomes 3 times its initial volume. If the specific
heat at constant volume of the gas is 2R, then find approximately the ratio of initial to final pressure.

Q.16 In a process the density of a gas remains constant. If the temperature is doubled, then new pressure
becomes x time initial pressure. Find the value of x.
