BUDDHIST THOUGHT AND APPLIED
PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH
The interface between Buddhist Studies and the uses of Buddhist principles and
practices in psychotherapy and consciousness studies has attracted a growing
interest from scholars and researchers of both Buddhism and psychology. This
book presents a collection of articles by leaders in these fields that typify the
potential of Buddhist-informed social sciences in contemporary society,
including new insights into the nature of human consciousness. It examines
the origins and expressions of Buddhist thought, and how it is now being utilized
by psychologists and social scientists. The basic tenets of Buddhism and
contemporary Buddhist-based empirical research in the psychological sciences
are explained. Further emphasis is placed on current trends in the areas of clinical
and cognitive psychology and on the Mahayana Buddhist understanding of
consciousness with reference to certain developments in Consciousness Studies
and Physics. All of the works in this volume demonstrate how Buddhist principles
can be used to develop a deeper understanding of the human condition and
behaviours that lead to a balanced and fulfilling life.
D. K. Nauriyal is Professor of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences
at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, India.
Michael S. Drummond is an interdisciplinary PhD researcher in Pali Buddhist
Studies and Psychology at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, where he

Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, India.
ROUTLEDGE CRITICAL STUDIES IN BUDDHISM
General Editors:
Charles S. Prebish and Damien Keown
Routledge Critical Studies in Buddhism is a comprehensive study of the Buddhist
tradition. The series explores this complex and extensive tradition from a variety
of perspectives, using a range of different methodologies.
The series is diverse in its focus, including historical studies, textual
translations and commentaries, sociological investigations, bibliographic studies,
and considerations of religious practice as an expression of Buddhism’s integral
religiosity. It also presents materials on modern intellectual historical studies,
including the role of Buddhist thought and scholarship in a contemporary, critical
context and in the light of current social issues. The series is expansive and
imaginative in scope, spanning more than two and a half millennia of Buddhist
history. It is receptive to all research works that inform and advance our
knowledge and understanding of the Buddhist tradition.
