SOPHISTICATED ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTATION FACILITY (SAIF)

&
CENTRAL INSTRUMENTATION LABORATORY (CIL)
PANJAB UNIVERSITY, CHANDIGARH
It gives me great pleasure to share that the Sophisticated Analytical Instrumentation Facility (SAIF)/
Central Instrumentation Laboratory (CIL), Panjab University has been working in unison in the
pursuit of achieving excellence in research by providing state-of-art sophisticated analytical
instrumentation facility to the researchers from various universities, institutes, R&D labs, MSMEs,
industries etc.

This Department of Science & Technology (DST) supported centre, is a central facility with state-of-
art facilities to provide wider service to a numerous educational institutions and industries that lack
significant instrumentation facilities. Also, University disburses funds from PURSE grants time-to
time in order to further support and strengthen the services and infrastructure. The department has
made significant efforts in the past times to visualize the efforts in extending the vision of enriching
Panjab University's to extend the knowledge and training to the learners who cannot afford it. In an
effort to provide an opportunity to enhance the capabilities of students located in remote areas of
India, the SAIF/CIL, Panjab University Chandigarh has extended their facilities and organized
special workshops for Union territory of Kashmir, Ladakh and states of Uttrakhand, Himachal and
northeast states. During these programmes, a very encouraging and positive response has been
received from the budding scientists of these areas.

I believe that the SAIF/CIL would continue to excel in their aims to serve the researchers' fraternity,
MSMEs and industries by putting their tireless efforts in enhancing the quality of their services to the
users and I wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

Prof. Raj Kumar

Vice Chancellor
Dear all,

Our department has been proud of its records in delivering fast and dedicated services to promote
the quality of research. The department has been providing multiple assistance, such as,
instrumentation facilities to characterize molecules and materials, workshop facilities to repair
analytical instruments, and postgraduate courses like M.Tech. (Instrumentation) and M.Sc
(Instrumentation), to improve the knowledge of young researchers. The Department is named as
Sophisticated Analytical Instrumentation Facility (SAIF, Central Instrumentation Laboratory (CIL)
and University Centre for Instrumentation and Micro-electronics (UCIM), respectively and is funded
by Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Panjab University. During COVID – 19
Pandemic, our department has in-house developed and commercialized UV-sanitization Chambers
and Thermal and UV paper currency sanitizer for disinfection. Further, SAIF, Panjab University
Chandigarh partners with Molekule USA, to donate air purification units to hospitals throughout
India to help in the fight against coronavirus.

On behalf of the department, I invite young and experienced researchers, R&D Labs, MSMEs &
Industries to make use of the instrumentation facilities available with us to experience the high-
quality expertise in research and development.

Molekule USA partners with SAIF, Panjab University Chandigarh to donate air purification units to
hospitals in India to help in the fight against coronavirus
COVID-19 is known to be transmitted from person to person by exposure to aerosolized respiratory droplets.
This makes adequate indoor air purification and ventilation extremely critical. In this effort, Molekule is
partnering with the Sophisticated Analytical Instrumentation Facility, Panjab University Chandigarh (SAIF,
PUC) to get Molekule air purifiers to COVID wards and ICUs at various hospitals in Chandigarh and Punjab,
including makeshift COVID hospital at the Panjab University. Given the deepening COVID-19 crisis in India
and the increasing threat to the health of citizens and healthcare workers, Molekule is donating 2,000 air
purifiers, worth more than 7.5 crore rupees, to hospitals across the country to help aid in the battle against the
virus and provide patients, doctors, and staff with much needed clean air.
SAIF, Panjab University staff members are very enthusiastically working for this noble cause. In the first batch,
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Prof. G.R. Chaudhary, Director, SAIF and Dr. Rajeev Kumar, Environment
Studies received 271 Molekule Air Purifier Mini units along with 2 units of Molekule Air Pro RX, which is
originally designed for medical purposes in the United States and optimized for air purification in
multipurpose facilities in hospitals to cater for huge areas such as emergency wards, ICUs etc.
Dr. Jaspreet Singh Dhau, Panjab University's Distinguished Alumni and Head of R&D at Molekule Inc. USA and
Prof. Ganga Ram Chaudhary, Director, SAIF, PUC are spearheading the campaign to provide Molekule Air
purifiers to various hospitals in India. Dr. Dhau from USA demonstrated assembling of Air Purifier to the
technical staff members of SAIF, PUC through online mode. All the devices were assembled and tested at SAIF,
PUC by its dedicated technical staff members.
GLIMPSES OF FEW PLACES, WHERE MOLEKULE AIR PURIFIERS UNITS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED

2000 Air Purifiers along with Air Pro RX Units donated by Molekule USA were / will be distributed amongst
various hospitals of 12 States of India (Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttrakhand, Uttar
Pradesh, Maharastra, Delhi, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka and West Bengal).
Under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, a team of Prof. Ganga
Ram Chaudhary, Director SAIF and employees is helping in setting up these air purifiers at emergency wards,
ICUs, COVID wards, and even waiting rooms to prevent the transmission of coronavirus.
Before distribution of units to hospitals, Prof. Chaudhary who is collaborating with Molekule, USA is explaining
the features of Molekule Air Purifier to Directors/Chief medical officer/medical superintendents/doctors of
various Hospitals, where these units are to be installed. Molekule's core technology, PECO is designed to
destroy airborne pollutants like viruses, bacteria, mold, or chemicals in the air known as VOCs. Tests on PECO
for these Molekule Air purifiers indicate:
o Up to 99.99% inactivation of coronavirus strains (porcine & bovine) and H1N1 flu virus. *Testing
completed with the University of Minnesota, USA in 2020
o Up to 95% destruction of VOCs and ozone (airborne chemicals). *Testing completed with
Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, USA in 2019
o Up to 99.9% destruction of bacteria, mold, and viruses in the air. *Testing completed with
Aerosol Research & Engineering Labs (ARE), USA in 2020
