Structures

NB: In order to understand structures at P7, we need to do the following:
a) To know the meaning of the structure.
b) To understand and appreciate its position in a sentence that is at the beginning, within or at the
end of a sentence.
c) To find other related structures which do similar or the same purpose as the one you are going to
teach/learn.
d) Remember to teach/learn this structure with one or two of those related to it.
Topic: Holiday plans.
Structure (1) ----- going to ------
A) Read these sentences.
a) We are going to plan for our holidays.
b) John is going to buy a new bicycle.
c) These girls are going to weave nice baskets.
B) These sentences mean
a) We shall plan for our holidays
b) John will buy a new bicycle.
c) These girls will weave nice baskets.
Remember: (Primary 4) we use ‘shall’ with, I, we
‘Will, with: you, you, he, she, it, they
John, the man, the goat, my mother, etc.
The above sentences can also be written as:
a) We are likely to plan for our holidays.
b) John is likely to buy a new bicycles.
c) These girls are likely to weave nice baskets.
We can also rewrite the above sentences using ‘’……look(s) forward to ……..’
a) We look forward to planning for our holidays.
b) John looks forward to buying a new bicycle.
c) These girls look forward to weaving nice baskets.

Remember: All the above sentences tell us of the future (time to come)

Structures (II) Question Tags
(a) Read the sentences below.
(i) Amooti is a good boy, isn’t he?
(ii) We have arrived, haven’t we?
(iii) Andeso won’t attend the party, will he?
(iv) School children mustn’t dress shabbily, must they?
NB: During conversations we normally make a statement and ask to confirm it.
For instance. It is hot, (statement)
Isn’t it? (Asking to confirm it)
The sentence is: It is hot, isn’t it?
‘’isn’t it? Is a question tag.
(Question tagged to (attached to) a statement.
In the examples above,
……isn’t he? Haven’t we? Will he? Must they? Are question tags.
NB:
(i) Tags are made of weak (auxiliary) Verbs, For instance. is, were, has, do, did, does,
have, must,……
(ii) When the statement is affirmative (positive) we use a negative form of the weak verb
in the tag.
For instance. she has gone, hasn’t she?
has gone (positive) hasn’t (negative)
(iii) When the statement is negative, the tag is positive.
For instance. she hasn’t gone, has she?
Hasn’t gone (negative) has gone (positive)
(iv) Sometimes the weak verb is not given,
For instance
a) He eats fish,___________________________?
b) We played football, _____________________?
c) You write good letters, __________________?
In the above statements there is no clear auxiliary verb. But we use the form of the word ‘do’
In statement,
(a) ‘eats’ means’ ‘does eat’
(b) ’played ’means’ ‘did play
(c) ‘Write ‘means’’ do write’
So their correct full forms are
(a) He eats fish, doesn’t he?
(b) We played football, didn’t we?
(c) You write good letters, don’t you?

Look at this:

(b) The boys didn’t attend remedial classes, did they?
(c) We don’t live in this town, do we?
(Quite interesting, isn’t it?)
