In bibliotheca Ducali Goihana asservatur codex manu-

riptus, olim numero 261, nunc 1554 signatus, in quo ab
itio aliquot folia desiderantur, in iis primum quod titulum
nomen auctoris continere solet. Possessor codicis orientalis
imascenus, qui eum anno 1129 H. i. e. 1717 p. Ch. acqui-
sii, titulum adscripsit (^^«-WA-II g—SJIj Q-, ¿ U J ! et
anus Europea versionem addidit »Istoria dell' autore d° Me-
di. Secondo tomo". Licet Möller in catalogo titulum falsum
se dixisset, Kosegarten, qui inde locum in Chrestomathiam
cepit (1828), pro genuino habuit et codicem continere to-
um operis Mascùdìi historici c. t. QU^ÌI ji-^s»' opinatus est.
cino 1840 Nicholson auctorem Hispanum fuisse ostendit.
is proposuerunt, donee tandem Dozy in introductione ad Ibn
- c Adhàrìi al-Baijän al-Moghrib luce clarius ostendit librum
se partem operis ^y-Iai! gv-^b MJ^ i. e. Compendii Anna-
hm Tabarii auctore c Arib ibn Sacd al-Kàtib al-Kortobì, qui
•evi post dimidium saeculi quarti, intra annos 363 et 366
ripsit. Sub modesto hoc titulo hic c Arib edidit opus, cujus
sis quidem fuit compendium Tabarii, at non tantum auctum
Vili PRAEFATIO.

Tabarîi in nostra editione compendiosam esse, Y e r b a quae

ejus nomine laudat c Arìb p. VA, 14 desiderantur, item locus
laudatus ab Ibn c A d h â r î I, IV, 3, ubi hie auctor dicit c Arìbum
rem aliter narrayisse.
canis e x s t a n t edita sunt a Dozyo in opere j a m laudato al-
Bayân al-Moghrib, cujus auctor Ibn c Adhârî magnam operis
'Arìbi partem in suum recepii. Quae omiserat Dozy uncinis
inclusa addidit, ceteris collato t e x t u c Arìbi correctis et variis
lectionibus notatis.
egregias emendationes continent. Eestabant quae c Arîb de
rebus Abbasidarum singulis annis gestis conscripsit. Multis j a m
abhinc annis ego haec in meum usum exscripseram. Subii t
deinde consilium ea editioni Tabarîi addendi, sed ipsius T a -
barîi Supplementum de testibus traditionum intercessit. Ideo
librum nunc separatim viris doctis offero. In mente fuit ei
addere partem Hamadhânîi supplementi ad Tabarîum, quae
in codice Parisino servata est. Sed hic codex, etiamsi editor
plus temporis operi impendere possit quam mihi licet, vix
aut ne vix quidem sufficit bonae editioni parandae. Accedit
quod historia Abbasidarum post regnum Moktadiri omni ju-
cunditate caret. Contra haec pars libri c Arîbi quam sors fausta
nobis servavit, tenet lectorem. Moktadir quum khalifae digni-
tatem obtinuit, imperium integrum erat, thesaurus plenus,
quum post regnum ferme quinque et viginti annorum periit,
auctoritas khalifatus labefacta erat, m o x umbra pristini splen-
doris futura, penuria argenti orta, omnibus fere fontibus re-
dituum cxhaustis, elegantia vitae cedere coepta moribus fero-
cibus barbarorum. Khalifam mitissimi, fere imbecilli ingenii,
dominabant mater ejusque familiares et adulatores; luxuria in
PRAEFATIO. IX

maxime pollebat ; defensoribus imperii sibi tantum consulen-
gnita saepe alio modo n a r r a n t u r ; j u r e itaque Weil hoe libro
tanquam fonte primaria historiae hujus temporis usus est.
Codicem olim his verbis descripsi: » codex universe bene
exaratus et bonae notae est. P u n c t a diacritica plerumque de-
siderante. In foliis 1—39 lector, et quidem ut atramenti
n a t u r a decere videtur, idem qui falsum titulum dedit libro,
puncta diligenter appinxit, at erat vir stupidissimus, qui suis
punctis saepe sententiam obscuravit et editoria munus difficile
reddidit". Nihil his addendum habeo quia nunc relegare pos-
sum ad ea quae de eo scripsit Y. CI. Pertsch in Catalogo I I I ,
184 seq. Editio mea incipit anno 291, sed codex partem anni
290 continet quae ad historiam Africae pertinet. Annus 320
More solito in
iterum codicem mihi commisit.
