MB REMOVALS & SELF STORAGE MOVING HOUSE CHECKLIST
Use this checklist as a guide only. Adapt as necessary to your own situation
4-6 WEEKS OUT FROM COMPLETION
If not getting the house packed up by a furniture removal company, begin clearing out room
by room. Identify items to be sold, donated to charity or taken to the the tip. Clear out the
garage first to use as a storage area.
Contact your telephone network provider to arrange connection for your new home and new
telephone number if required. Also transfer internet services if with the same provider.
Contact your electricity provider to arrange the new connection
Arrange paperwork from electrician to go to electricity providers for set up of solar power
connected to the grid (if relevant).
Arrange new doctor, dentist and vet in new area
Contact your doctor, dentist and vet to arrange to collect medical records or transfer them
If renting, formally notify landlord or intention to leave as required by your rental agreement.
Provide a weeks buffer in case the builder runs over and to cover cleaning.
Arrange for a cleaner to thoroughly clean the home before any final inspections to receive
your bond back.
If packing yourself, purchase packing boxes and tape
Begin packing non-essential items that are rarely used, e.g. books, pictures, linen etc.
Number each box and itemise what is in it on an inventory list and add what room it is to be
put into in the new home (see separate tracking spreadsheet below).
2-4 WEEKS OUT FROM COMPLETION
Complete postal redirection forms and lodge them with your post office.
Arrange for disconnection of electricity in current home
Arrange for disconnection of telephone in current home
Arrange for disconnection of gas in current home
Arrange for disconnection of paid TV in current home (if applicable)
Arrange connection of paid TV in new home (if applicable)
Use up food in freezer and refrigerator as well as limit new purchases
Arrange the property inspection with the landlord (if applicable)
Confirm handover date with builder
Arrange carpet cleaners for existing home
Hold garage sale (or use eBay) for items to be sold
Arrange for charity to pick up large unwanted items
Arrange home and contents insurance for new home and confirm cover while moving
Disassemble any furniture that isn’t required in the short term e.g. spare beds
Disassemble outdoor furniture and clean ready for moving
Make arrangements for young children and pets to be cared for on moving day
Identify valuable items to be kept aside and transported personally
Identify items that will need to be kept aside for quick assess on the day of moving e.g.
linen/pillows for beds, clothing, medication etc.
Create list of organisations to be notified of change of address
Cancel any newspaper deliveries
Continue packing
1 WEEK OUT FROM COMPLETION
Carry out any required garden care and maintenance e.g. mow lawns before you move
Begin compiling change of address notifications
Collate keys for the existing home to give to landlord or new owner
Collate manuals/warranties for the existing home to give to landlord or new owner
Return any library books, DVDS etc
Confirm disconnection date with electricity provider
Confirm disconnection date with telephone provider
Confirm disconnection date with gas provider
Confirm connection date with electricity provider

Confirm start time with removal company and what you will need to disassemble
Use up any remaining food in the fridge / freezer and clean out
Defrost freezer the day before the move. Use white vinegar or baking soda to dispel any
odours.
Leave out pet transport (e.g. cages), food bowls and litter trays

Complete packing and print out inventory list for quick reference (3 copies). Suggest you sort
the list by room to make it easier to check it off.
Pack personal belongings required for moving day (and possibly day after)
Arrange meals for moving day
Get keys for new home from builder and carry out defects inspection
MOVING DAY
Leave all manuals and spare keys for the landlord or new owner
Take garage remote out of car and leave it on the bench or give to agent
Do a final walk around once emptied and check every cupboard
Do a walk around of the exterior to ensure nothing has been left behind
Lock all doors and windows
Show your removal company around the new home once you have arrived so they know
which boxes and each item of furniture go in each room.
Prioritise the setting up of furniture e.g. beds first
Arrange to pick up young children and pets
Once the removal company have completed the unload, quickly check off each room to
ensure all boxes have arrived.
Find a chair, crack open the bubbly or beer and put your feet up.
POST MOVING DAY
Get additional house keys cut
Set up new newspaper delivers
Follow up outstanding defects with builder
Set up warranty/maintenance trackers
Finish sending change of address notifications
