CHRONICLE

Nikola Tesla was a remarkable inventor and engineer

born on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, a village in what is
now Croatia, then part of the Austrian Empire. He
came from a Serbian family; his father was an
Orthodox priest, and his mother, though unschooled,
was highly intelligent and inventive. Tesla showed
extraordinary talents from a young age, with a strong
memory and a vivid imagination, and later studied
engineering in Graz, Austria, and Prague.

Teslaʼs major contribution to science and technology was his development and
patenting of the rotating magnetic field, which became the foundation of most
alternating-current AC) electrical machinery. He also invented the AC induction
motor and the Tesla coil, widely used in radio technology. His AC electrical system
was revolutionary because it allowed electricity to be transmitted efficiently over
long distances, unlike the direct current DC) systems favored by Thomas Edison.
Tesla moved to the United States in 1884 with little money but big ideas, initially
working with Edison before pursuing his inventions independently.

With the financial support of George Westinghouse, Teslaʼs AC system was

adopted to power the 1893 Worldʼs Columbian Exposition in Chicago and later the
Niagara Falls hydroelectric power plant, marking the beginning of widespread AC
power use. Tesla was also a pioneer in early radio technology, X-ray imaging, and
wireless transmission of electricity, though some of his ambitious projects like the
Wardenclyffe Tower for global wireless communication were never completed due
to lack of funding.
Despite his brilliance and numerous inventions (over 300 patents in his name)
Tesla died alone and impoverished in 1943 in New York City. He left behind a
lasting legacy that profoundly shaped electrical engineering and modern
technology. The unit of magnetic flux density, the tesla, bears his name as a tribute
to his contributions.

This chronicle of Nikola Tesla highlights a visionary inventor whose work electrified
the world and whose legacy continues to inspire innovation today.
